Apple Family Reunion is the eighth episode of the third season of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic and the sixtieth overall. In this episode, Applejack takes the lead in organizing an Apple family reunion, though her efforts to make the event memorable end up going too far.
Production and development[]
Episode writer Cindy Morrow revealed that the original script featured Timberwolves instead of bats.[3]
The episode is listed on both the iTunes Store and Zap2it as the ninth episode of the third season,[4][5] and the keywords of Hasbro and The Hub's YouTube uploads of a clip from the episode respectively include "Ep. 309" and "309".[6][7] Layout supervisor Tim Stuby wrote on Twitter "Apple Fam Reunion is 309" in response to an Equestria Daily post[8] that, at the time, listed Apple Family Reunion and Spike at Your Service as the respective eighth and ninth episodes of the third season, Sabrina Alberghetti wrote on DeviantArt that Apple Family Reunion was slotted as 9 when she "did it, but stuff like that changes all the time",[9] one of the show's layout artists wrote on The Allspark Forums that Apple Family Reunion is episode 9,[10] and show storyboard artist Raven Molisee listed the episode as number 309 on deviantArt.[1]
The episode was released on the iTunes Store a few hours prior to its television premiere on The Hub on December 22, 2012, 10:30 AM Eastern Time.
According to storyboard artist Sabrina Alberghetti, the two shooting stars represent Applejack's parents.[11]

The Apple family reunion[]
So many RSVP's, Big Mac needs a wheelbarrow.
At Sweet Apple Acres, Applejack and Granny Smith look through a box of family heirlooms while Apple Bloom sorts a pile of RSVPs for the upcoming family reunion. She reports that everyone in the family plans to attend, eliciting some alarm from Granny Smith.
Recognizing that Granny may have trouble preparing for so many attendees, Applejack offers to take charge of organizing the reunion. Granny uses photographs from past reunions to show what activities she should prepare: quilting, a seven-legged race, baking apple fritters, and a family photo in front of the barn. Eager to make a good impression as first-time host, Applejack promises to create the most memorable reunion yet.
No time to chat[]
The next day, Applejack enlists the help of Apple Bloom, Big McIntosh, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, and Spike while preparing the various activities for the reunion. She places the final decorations just as a mass of Apple family members arrives at the farm. Apple Bloom and Babs Seed find each other and start catching up, only for Applejack to interrupt and lead them over to the seven-legged race. When Babs remarks how far away the finish line is, Applejack reveals that, in addition to having a very long track, the race continues on into four other activities.
The family members aren't exactly enjoying themselves.
While Granny Smith, Apple Rose, and Auntie Applesauce reminisce at the quilting station, Applejack stops by and unveils a set of sewing machines. The elderly trio begin sewing but quickly realize that they are unable to hear each other talk over the noise of the machines. At the baking area, Applejack interrupts conversation between family members to suggest that they focus more on assembling the apple fritters.
Applejack uses a megaphone to call a break in the activities and looks around for photo opportunities, but when all she finds are exhausted attendees, she determines to "kick this thing up a notch" by moving on to a fast-paced hayride around the farm. As the wagon passes through the west orchard, Applejack kicks a nearby tree, triggering a mass of rainbow-colored fruit bats to stream out of the foliage in a brilliant display above the group. The bats soon notice an apple in Auntie Applesauce's hat, however, causing them to descend on the riders and distract the stallions pulling the wagon. The ponies abandon the vehicle, which continues rolling forward before crashing into the barn and destroying it.

Applejack laments the collapse of both the barn and her plans for the reunion, though Granny Smith points out the family actually appreciate a break in the schedule since it gave them no time to simply enjoy each other's company. When Granny remarks how there's still time to make memories, Applejack remembers the family photo in front of the barn and announces the next activity: rebuilding the barn. In a song, the family members work together happily to complete the structure before taking a group picture in front of it.
Looks like the reunion was memorable after all.
The reunion ends, and Granny congratulates Applejack for making it so memorable. That evening, Applejack writes a friendship report to Princess Celestia about how it doesn't take much to have a memorable time with folks you care about, and that you'll remember the "who" long after you forget the "what".

Then you'll run around these trees fifty times until you're real good and dizzy, then you'll jump these big wooden hurdles, and then there's the final leg, where you'll balance plates on your head while sayin' "Pappy pony picked a pluck of prickly pluffnuggets" over and over and over again. Last pony standin' wins!
- Apple Bloom: ...Seriously?
- Granny Smith: Where in the world does that girl have us headed? The west orchard?
- Big McIntosh: Eeyup.
- Granny Smith: What?! I was jokin'! Why, we haven't tended those fields since all the trees went and got filled up with... [gulps]
