Cakes for the Memories is the second episode of the My Little Pony Friendship is Magic mini-series Friendship is Forever. It is the second of six[1] clip show episodes that feature footage from previous episodes. The title is a play on the song "Thanks for the Memory" by Bob Hope and Shirley Ross, previously referenced by Tanks for the Memories.
In this episode, Pinkie Pie reminisces about her past moments of laughter while making the cakes for Twilight Sparkle's princess coronation.
Production[]
This episode aired on 9Go! and was released on the 9Now on-demand service in Australia on April 27, 2020. It also aired on PLUSPLUS in Ukraine on July 21, 2021. As of 2024, it has not aired in the United States.
Summary[]
At Sugarcube Corner, Starlight Glimmer and Spike tell Pinkie Pie that they are putting together a magical scrapbook to give to Twilight at her coronation, and they need memories to fill the book with. Pinkie is expecting Twilight to arrive to taste-test the cakes she made for the coronation, and with instruction from Starlight on how to fill the book, she agrees to help.
When Twilight arrives for the taste test, Starlight and Spike quickly excuse themselves. Pinkie gives Twilight desserts that she baked using a special "taste/memory formula", with each dessert meant to remind Twilight of a specific memory. The first cupcake reminds Twilight of when she and Pinkie first met. The second reminds her of when Pinkie taught her and their friends to laugh in the face of danger. The third reminds her of Pinkie's party-planning cave and dedication to making everyone happy. After some taste-testing and fond reminiscing, Pinkie thanks Twilight for her help, and Twilight leaves. Unfortunately, Pinkie forgot to activate the scrapbook and thus failed to capture any of Twilight's memories in it.
Pinkie invites Twilight back to Sugarcube Corner for another taste test so that she can capture some of Twilight's memories in the scrapbook. She produces a big buffet of cakes for Twilight to taste. The first reminds Twilight of when Pinkie made dozens of duplicates of herself, but Pinkie meant for it to remind her of the various holidays Pinkie invented, like the Cake twins' month-iversary and sneeze-iversary, "It's Not Your Birthday But Here's a Pie Anyway" Day, and National Random Holiday Party Day.
The second cake reminds Twilight of her first experience with Pinkie Pie's Pinkie Sense, the time when Pinkie babysat the Cake twins, and the various outfits she has worn over the years, but Pinkie meant for it to remind Twilight of her cartoonish behavior and ability to break the fourth wall. Despite Pinkie's disappointment, Twilight trusts her to make the best coronation desserts she can. As Twilight leaves, Starlight and Spike come out of hiding, having successfully captured Twilight's memories in the scrapbook. However, Pinkie is upset that Twilight did not recall the correct memories, and she wants to try one more time to get her taste/memory formula right.
Later, Pinkie Pie wakes Twilight up in the middle of the night with one last cake for her to try. Twilight is overwhelmed by the cake's taste, and it reminds her of when Pinkie prevented a war between Equestria and Yakyakistan, kept a secret about Princess Cadance and Shining Armor having a baby, realized her life's purpose, and brought smiles to everyone in Ponyville with the Smile Song. Pinkie is thrilled that Twilight remembered the memories she intended, and Twilight says the cake is perfect for her coronation.
Twilight goes back to sleep, and Pinkie Pie leaves her bedroom. Unfortunately, Starlight and Spike, having been hiding under the cake cart, had fallen asleep and did not get to capture the memories Twilight just recalled in the scrapbook. Luckily, Pinkie steps in to fill in the blanks herself.
Quotes[]
- For more quotes, see the episode's transcript.
- Pinkie Pie: [quickly] You and Spike are putting together a magical book of memories that you plan to give to Twilight as a surprise at her coronation, and you need me to get her to talk about her favorite memories of me so you can record them all in your book?
- Spike: Pretty much.
- Twilight Sparkle: I can tell what that one is just by looking at it. I don't even need to taste it—
- Pinkie Pie: Wrong!
- Pinkie Pie: I really thought I had my taste/memory formula figured out, but I was completely/totally wrong.
- Pinkie Pie: [quickly] This cake is about my ability to sum up a series of events in a quickly stated run-on sentence that keeps going for as long as it takes for me to say either everything that's happened up to this point or everything that's going to happen with no real way of explaining how I could possibly know that information!
- Twilight Sparkle: This cake is amazing. I'm not sure you ever need to bake another one.
- Pinkie Pie: [stammers] Let's not go crazy.
