Chapter books

My Little Pony chapter books (licensed by Hasbro) are a series of novellas based on My Little Pony Friendship is Magic published by Little, Brown and Company. Each chapter book in the series features a different pony character, has an original story that ties in with events in the show, and includes bonus activity pages. The series includes one book by G. M. Berrow for each of the six pony main characters as well as others. Books are being released every three months, both in print and as e-books for Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, Google Play, or iBooks. At least one of the MLP books that Berrow wrote has relationship to the fourth season of Friendship is Magic.^{​[​specify​]​}

Differences between the book and the film

Sunset Shimmer trips over Spike's arm instead of his tail. Twilight does not encounter a male student and his dog in front of Canterlot High School. Twilight meets Rainbow Dash before ever bumping into Flash Sentry. Pinkie Pie doesn't mention the human world's Twilight Sparkle and Spike. Trixie is absent. In the video, Sunset appears telling viewers not to vote for Twilight. The details of Sunset's smear campaign against Rarity during the Spring Fling are revealed. Sunset Shimmer is present during Twilight's scene in Vice Principal Luna's office. Principal Celestia and Vice Principal Luna wear gowns to the Fall Formal. In the movie, they wear their regular outfits. Sunset threatens to destroy the portal to Equestria with a golf club instead of a sledgehammer. Rainbow Dash is the only one who helps Spike try to keep the crown away from Sunset Shimmer, Snips, and Snails. Sunset transforms while inside the school gym instead of on the front courtyard. Sunset's transformed form includes a gnarled horn, a concept that would later be applied to Midnight Sparkle in Friendship Games. Sunset Shimmer's transformed form shoots fireballs to turn Snips and Snails into creatures like her and to turn the students into zombies. In the movie, Sunset used magic beams to transform Snips and Snails and she used hypnosis to turn the students into zombies. When the students are zombies, they have red eyes. In the movie, they have green eyes. Various lines are altered. In their altered forms, Twilight and Rarity's human counterpart have unicorn horns. When the event is over, Sunset apologizes to the students instead of repairing the school with Snips and Snails. When Twilight and Spike return to Equestria, her human friends are not shown reverting to ordinary humans and Pinkie Pie is not shown trying to follow them.

Rainbow Rocks

My Little Pony: Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks by Perdita Finn is a book published on April 8, 2014, bearing ISBN 978-0-316-28486-8. It serves as a prequel to the film of the same name and is adapted from the first eight animated shorts, which coincide with the film.

Differences between the book and the shorts

Mrs. Cake has an additional line, "Lovely day isn't it." After the girls play their instruments, their tails and ears disappear, unlike the shorts where they remain in their half-pony form near the end. Twilight is not involved in getting the gym ready, but is mentioned; nor does she join the rest of her friends at the carnival. There is additional dialogue in the music store. Rarity also names another hamster "Mayfield Bumblepuss". The ending of the hamster fiasco is different. Instead of making a snide comment, Rarity recognizes Fluttershy's musical talent and asks her to be the band's tambourinist. The scene where Principal Celestia confiscates DJ Pon-3's headphones is replaced by a fire drill announced by Vice Principal Luna. The guitar that Trixie "wins" after the shred-off is $1,200 instead of $12,000. It is also not a double-necked guitar. The scene in the kitchen has more dialogue such as Pinkie asking Granny Smith what it means to fold. Pinkie helps out Rarity with the banner instead of Rainbow Dash. There is also an additional scene that shows the unfortunate results of having too much glitter on the banner. There are additional scenes with Trixie throughout. There are also additional appearances of DJ Pon-3 throughout. It is explained that Trixie gave Rarity the grand piano. Instead of hearing the ringing of a kitchen timer, Rainbow Dash looks at her watch. There is additional dialogue throughout the piano episode. Granny Smith has a harder time remembering whom she sold Applejack's bass to. The human versions of Flim and Flam wear boater hats just like their pony counterparts. Instead of Granny Smith passing by Applejack saying "Since when do you play the bass?" and Applejack face-palming, Trixie passes by Applejack saying "Are those costumes for your band?", and Applejack replies "Just for practicin'." The scenes taking place in Equestria were created for the book to bridge the beginning and the end. The verses of "Perfect Day for Fun" are extremely different. Only the choruses remain the same. The carnival takes place before the band is formed. In the shorts, the band plays at the carnival.

Rainbow Rocks: The Mane Event

Differences between the book and the film

Some of Sonata and Aria's arguments are slightly longer. The Rainbooms are occasionally referred to by their original name, the Sonic Rainbooms. Some dialogue is altered. For instance, Rarity's "past...ahem...booboos" is changed to "past misdeeds". The scenes of students getting along during Better Than Ever are different. Sunset meets the Dazzlings in the main office instead of the foyer. Pinkie's "off like this" visual gags are different. As is customary with novelizations, most song lyrics are replaced by descriptive text and/or dialogue, with the exception of Under Our Spell, which is mostly written out. When Principal Celestia and Vice Principal Luna become entranced, the say together in unison, "We've never wanted anything more." Sunset gets the book from her car instead of her locker. The books that belong to Sunset and Celestia are switched. The book that Sunset carries has Celestia's cutie mark on it instead of her own and the book in Equestria has Sunset's cutie mark instead of Celestia's. There is additional dialogue for the Mane Six in the scene in Equestria. The gag where Applejack and Pinkie play cards is not present and neither is Rainbow's line before Twilight returns to Canterlot High. Rainbow Dash shows Twilight videos of all the main five transforming, not just herself. Twilight doesn't shout, "Friendship is magic!" Rainbow Dash invites Twilight to be the newest member of the Rainbooms instead of Rarity. The gag with Spike photobombing Rarity, Fluttershy, and Sunset's selfie is not present. During the rehearsal at Sweet Apple Acres, instead of the Rainbooms completely failing to turn into their half-pony forms, they partially transform. For example, Pinkie Pie only gets one pony ear. Adagio calls the Rainbooms "the Rainblossoms" instead of Aria. In addition, Trixie does not intentionally call the Rainbooms by the wrong name like "Rainbrooms" or "Raingoons". During Shake Your Tail, Twilight is mentioned to be playing tambourine and singing backup harmony, rather than Fluttershy. The conversation between the Rainbooms before the semi-finals takes place in the janitor's closet instead of backstage. Additionally, during that conversation, Rarity is given a line of dialogue. Whenever Trixie disappears, Pinkie doesn't catch her hiding. During Awesome as I Wanna Be, Rainbow Dash's transformation is caused by Trixie holding up a poster of Twilight overshadowing her, rather than Rainbow just getting carried away. Octavia's line "I knew she was still trouble" is given to a different girl and Octavia has a different line, "I'm a classically trained musician. It should have been me!" Sweetie Belle has a line. Trixie pulls the lever instead of Fuschia Blush. The Dazzlings begin playing guitars when they enter the amphitheater's stage, rather than just singing. As the Rainbooms argue under the stage, the magic sucked away from them is the color of "a hideous rainbow" instead of bluish-green. Instead of Spike simply opening the door under the stage, DJ Pon-3 pries it open with a crowbar. DJ Pon-3's car does not transform into a DJ booth. Instead, she grabs some speakers from the trunk. Some of the dialogue from when the girls are under the stage is moved to when they are on the hillside. Twilight does not fire any projectiles at the Dazzlings; however, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, and Applejack do, unlike in the movie. Sunset has wings in her half-pony form. Sunset removes the Dazzlings' pendants instead of the magic alicorn destroying them. Sunset only mentions that she plays the guitar, rather than her actually playing it. There is an extra scene in Equestria in the end. Shine Like Rainbows takes place in the music room, not the amphitheater. The post-credits scene is absent.

Sunset Shimmer's Time to Shine

My Little Pony: Equestria Girls: Sunset Shimmer's Time to Shine by Perdita Finn is an original Equestria Girls story set between the second and third films. Two editions of it were published on May 5, 2015, a Barnes & Noble Special Edition bearing ISBN 978-0-316-38650-0 and another edition bearing ISBN 978-0-316-41079-3.

Differences between the book and the film

Applejack's guess as to why the mystery girl would mess with the statue is presented as an explanation. Rarity's guess is not present. In the library scene, in addition to Rainbow Dash bringing up the sports CPA beats CHS in, Pinkie Pie also brings up all the other activities CPA beats them in. When Applejack expresses relief at not having to deal with another "magical so-and-so bent on world domination coming over from Equestria", Sunset Shimmer reacts with embarrassment instead of amusement. CHS Rally Song is the only song to appear in the novelization, but it has slightly different lyrics. Crystal Prep is a boarding school. In addition to showing Puppy Spike the device, Sci-Twi plugs it into her computer to upload the data collected from it. Sunny Flare has an additional line at the bus station. Cinch and Sci-Twi's meeting outside CHS, which was cut from the American TV showing, has less dialogue. All of the energy being sucked out of the portal and the Equestria Girls is purple instead of their respective colors. In the Wondercolts lineup, Sandalwood, Micro Chips, and Muffins are replaced by "Cecil", "Poindexter", and Trixie. In the auditorium, in addition to the rift showing the Everfree Forest, Sci-Twi sees a rift showing Ponyville Town Hall. The P.A. announcement before the Acadeca by Luna is instead given in the auditorium. Trixie makes a concoction that explodes instead of Muffins. In addition, the running gag of her "disappearing" after the smoke clears reappears here. Applejack doesn't say, "Oh, it puts you on a field, all right." Dean Cadance does not appear to be certain that CHS won the Tricross Relay and also does not instruct all students to proceed to the gym. The rift in the sky after the Tricross Relay shows Rainbow Falls instead of the Equestrian night sky. Some of the water from the Falls pours on top of the Equestria Girls' heads. Rainbow Dash corrects Cinch to say that only one of CHS's students had wings, adding, "And I didn't even cross the finish line." The dialogue in the Wondercolts' corner before Capture the Flag is longer. Midnight Sparkle was described as a giant. This additional exchange between Sunset and Midnight Sparkle is added: Sunset Shimmer: You can't understand everything. No one can. Midnight Sparkle: Oh, but I can! Oh, but I will! While Twilight is specified to turn into Midnight Sparkle, Sunset simply ponies up. Additionally, the brief magic battle scene between the two is cut out, and Sunset extends her hand to Midnight earlier than in the movie. In the movie, Sour Sweet says, "Mostly it was her!" in reference to Principal Cinch. In the novel, she blames it on Sci-Twi, thereby invalidating her change of heart at the end of the movie. When Cadance says to Sci-Twi that she will talk to Celestia about letting her transfer to CHS, she adds about Celestia, "She's like an aunt to me", in reflection of the relationship between Princess Celestia and Princess Cadance in Equestria. Twilight appears out of the portal as soon as the girls get ready to wrap up their picnic, instead of in the middle of it. After Twilight says, "Make that the second strangest", all the Equestria Girls laugh, happy to see her.

In Twilight's first nightmare, her friends have some extra dialogue, and in addition to Midnight Sparkle appearing, Twilight also transforms into Midnight Sparkle herself before she and the other Midnight Sparkle merge into one. Spike has some extra lines before Twilight and Flash Sentry interact. Sunset Shimmer is the only one who notices tension between Gloriosa Daisy and Timber Spruce. Celestia and Luna have a slightly longer argument about the Camp Everfree sundial; their dialogue slightly alludes to Princess Celestia banishing Princess Luna to the moon. Rainbow Dash is also assigned to the Emerald Tent with Pinkie Pie and Rarity. Minor gags are absent, such as Sunset Shimmer playing with a flashlight. Rarity, Pinkie, and Sunset have some additional lines of dialogue when the construction on the new dock begins. In Timber Spruce's description of Gaea Everfree, he also adds that "her skin was made of dirt". Rainbow Dash's super speed manifests earlier than in the film, but no one notices. When Rarity's shield power first manifests, it makes a shield all around her instead of just in front of her. Muffins's line is removed. Rainbow Dash has an additional line of dialogue during the paper lanterns scene. Gloriosa Daisy has an additional scene with Lyra Heartstrings and Trixie Lulamoon. There is a different scene when Sunset tries to read Pinkie Pie's mind, and Sunset has a much more positive reaction to it. Sunset and Twilight have some additional lines talking about Timber Spruce just before they enter the Crystal Cave. The seven geodes are each placed on an individual pillar instead of being grouped together on one pillar. Gloriosa's third flashback loops back to her line when she greets the campers through the P.A. system. Gloriosa's final flashback with Timber Spruce is told entirely through narration. There is additional dialogue in the Crystal Cave where Gloriosa is surprised that Spike can talk. Snips does not comment on Gloriosa's height. Applejack and Rarity have extra lines during the girls' "Save the day!" scene. Twilight's inner struggle with Midnight Sparkle takes place in the outside world instead of inside her mind. Gloriosa returns to normal and reunites with Timber before Twilight and her friends transform and destroy the brambles. They revert to their normal human appearances immediately afterward. The scene in which Twilight and Timber almost kiss is replaced with extra lines: Timber Spruce: This is awesome! Twilight Sparkle: It kinda is, isn't it? When Sunset wonders where the magic came from, she is with all of her friends, not just Twilight. The post-credits scene is absent. Songs: The Legend of Everfree, The Midnight in Me, Embrace the Magic, and Legend You Were Meant To Be all have altered lyrics. Differences between the book and the specials

The events of all three specials are shuffled around to form one cohesive storyline. The Crystal Prep girls only appear in the beginning of the book when Rarity signs up at the mall and are not seen or heard from again. As a result, the subplot about the Crystal Prep girls attempting to steal the Equestria Girls' video concept as their own is dropped. Sugarcoat says that only three weeks have passed since the Friendship Games, while she says it has only been "a few months" in the special. No mention is made of Dean Cadance becoming the principal of Crystal Prep. The portal is still referred to as the Wondercolt statue, even though the statue was destroyed in Friendship Games, and has not been rebuilt since. Sunset Shimmer is not present in the scene where Rarity presents her idea, since she is back in Equestria. The scenes of Rarity presenting her idea and the girls coming up with music video concepts are combined into one scene. Starlight Glimmer suggests to Rarity the concept of the music video instead of Rarity coming up with it on her own. Starlight joins the girls in the Dance Magic video instead of Lemon Zest, Sour Sweet, Sugarcoat, and Sunny Flare. In the novel, the Equestria Girls still have their cell phones on hand while on the set of the Daring Do movie. Sunset uses it to receive updates from Starlight, who is following traces of Equestrian magic. Rainbow Dash attempts to use her phone to contact the other girls while she's trapped in the storage closet but she does not have the signal. In the specials, their phones were all confiscated by security. The nervous P.A. who mistakes the Equestria Girls for actresses is female instead of male. Canter Zoom is also the director of the Power Ponies movie, instead of the generic director in the special. When trapped in the net, Rarity uses her geode to help them escape. Juniper Montage's usher uniform is only a pair of black pants and a white shirt with her name tag on it, with no mention of her crazy hat or her red blazer. Juniper imitates the sound of radio static on her walkie-talkie by crinkling a piece of paper, rather than making "pssssh" sounds with her mouth. The clerk at the sunglasses kiosk is also female instead of male. The mirror makes the Equestria Girls disappear one by one instead of all at once. Rather than merely attempting to grab the mirror from the Juniper monster's grasp, Starlight attempts to distract her by pretending to be a newspaper reporter wanting an exclusive interview with her.

Differences between the book and the special

Songs are replaced by dialogue, as usual. Thus, two lines that break the fourth wall are not included. Wallflower Blush is simply referred to as "Wallflower". Some dialogue is trimmed and/or added. Events from Queen of Clubs are added. In the special, Trixie wants to be named the "Greatest and Powerfullest". In the novel, she uses the grammatically correct "Greatest and Most Powerful", so Sunset's line about "Powerfullest" not being a word is replaced by her claim that it is not a real Superlative. At the beach, after touching Applejack, Sunset touches Rainbow to see her image disappearing from the relay at the Friendship Games, a scene only present in the extended version on YouTube. Sunset's diary conversation with Princess Twilight takes place in Sunset's bedroom rather than on the beach. Princess Twilight's reaction to the reveal of the restricted section of the Canterlot Library is a little less intense than depicted in the special. There is a scene of Princess Celestia showing Sunset and Princess Twilight the broken-down library catalog machine, a scene only present in the extended version on YouTube. In the novel, Sunset's response to Twilight asking about the trials of Clover the Clever make it clear that she is not really familiar. In the special, her response is a little more ambiguous. After Trixie mentions pulling a rabbit out of a hat, a brief gag is added where she pulls Angel Bunny out of a hat, to the ire of Fluttershy. A scene in which Trixie and Sunset interrogate Micro Chips is added, a scene only present in the extended version on YouTube. In the scene in the special, Micro Chips offers a half-chewed carrot stick. In the novel, he offers creamed toast. In the novel, after Trixie is insulted at Sunset's insistence of putting Wallflower's garden in the yearbook, Sunset indicates to Trixie that Wallflower is a lead. In the special, Sunset simply runs in front of Flash Sentry's car. In the novel, she is nearly run over by the car.

Differences between the book and the special

As a choose-your-own-adventure novel, the book has five alternate endings, each depending on the reader's choices: If Sunset attempts to break the loop by disrupting time, she tries various activities to keep herself awake, believing that awareness of the loop is the key. She ends up going on a date with a boy as part of a dare with Twilight, but just before they kiss, the loop flings her back in time to the day she and her friends are buying tickets to the festival. If Sunset tries to escape the time loop by driving away from the festival, she gets a flat tire in every loop, caused by a random object lying in the middle of the road each time. She eventually gives up and resigns herself to her fate, repeating the festival endlessly until she has memorized every possible outcome and event. (This ending is partially adapted from a similar scene in the special.) If Sunset sabotages the festival and gets it canceled, thinking that the time loop will end if she changes the day's events drastically enough, she inadvertently rips the fabric of space-time to the point where time around Sunset begins to loop on fast-forward. If Sunset confronts PostCrush before making amends with Pinkie, she and K-Lo fight over the Time Twirler until they accidentally drop and break it before it can be deactivated, trapping the three in the time loop for eternity. If Sunset joins PostCrush, they take a "commemorative" photo of her and use it in the next loop to frame her as a "crazy fan", kicking her out of the band and never letting her come near them again.

The Daring Do Adventure Collection

A collection of three books starring Daring Do was released on October 7, 2014. The books are credited to A.K. Yearling, but in reality were written by regular author G. M. Berrow. Differences between the book and the film

With the exception of a few lyrics of We Got This Together, all songs are replaced with dialogue, with the exception of One Small Thing, whose sequence is removed entirely. Many lines of dialogue are different, omitted, and/or replaced by the narrator saying them. Tempest throws an obsidian orb directly at Cadance, rather than Cadance intercepting one aimed at Celestia, and Twilight does not catch Luna with her magic after Luna is petrified. When Tempest examines her reflection in the scene in the throne room of Canterlot Castle, she does so in a window rather than in the form of the petrified Celestia. Pinkie offers the breath mint to the fish creature, rather than the pig creature. Capper mistakes Spike for a "baby crocodile" and asks Twilight if he is house-trained. A brief scene in Capper's manor is added in which Twilight asks Capper what he knows about the Queen of the Hippos, which Capper lies about, then offers Fluttershy some tea. Upon reaching Captain Celaeno's airship, the Mane Six mistake the birdlike crew for griffons, assume them to be potential allies, and decide to remain on board, as opposed to simply being afraid of getting caught. After Captain Celaeno calls for lunch, Twilight asks if they can have some, rather than randomly joining them in the film. Tempest points out to the pirates that they are not wearing their uniforms, with the pirates responding that they were having a pirate-themed party, arousing Tempest's suspicions of the ponies' presence. The scene showing Twilight assembling the hot-air balloon is removed, going straight from Grubber discovering the Mane Six's map to the ponies in the balloon, describing the event in dialogue. Shelly and Sheldon do not appear. When Twilight gets captured, Spike isn't caught in a storm creature's clutches. This line from Tempest, referring to the Princesses: Tempest Shadow: [to Twilight] Wow, it's a good thing they're stone, right? So you don't have to see their disappointment in your complete, utter failure. After the Storm King asks Tempest what she can do, Grubber does not insist, "Your bidding." Instead, the King sarcastically suggests, "Light a little candle with that sparkler of yours?"
