Forums: Index > Wiki discussion > Abuse filter IP blocking

Ok, so I have been thinking about making this forum for a decent while now and have decided to do so. So whenever the Abuse filter picks up something, it blocks them indefinitely. Now that may be fine for accounts, but for IP users it can be a problem. Some people reckon IPs should never be blocked indefinitely, (especially on the first offense) as IPs are known to change and fluctuate, and an innocent user could be assigned an indefinitely blocked IP address if their IP changes. We have a good number of anonymous contributors on this wiki who make significant and great contributions. So, the idea I am proposing is: To not block IPs indefinitely (for editorial reasons), instead give them a fixed unit of being blocked instead of forever. If the Abuse filter picks up something and blocks them, an admin should tweak the block so it isn't forever. (of course depending on what they put). It's not currently possible to differentiate between blocking only accounts and not IPs with the Abuse Filter. Admins have been changing Abuse Filter IP blocks to fixed durations for as long as I can remember. If we're not anymore, then we should.  Food 25px-Surprise.png  01:42, December 24, 2012 (UTC)
Ah okay, I wasn't aware that admins were already doing that. In that case, this forum doesn't really have a purpose then. (if the abuse filter IP blocks are already being handled by admins) http://i.imgur.com/B0lGGoQ.gifOz   01:49, December 24, 2012 (UTC)
