A section called Acute amnesia was recently added to the Afflictions and illnesses page. I strongly object to it because it is in-universe and perhaps more importantly, no such name has been mentioned in the show. Later on in the page, the black crystals on Shining Armor's horn are listed as another affliction. I am in favour of deleting the "Acute amnesia" information, but it seems like getting rid of too much information. How could we integrate Sombra (if it is necessary, that is) into the page? It's not an affliction, it's a result of Sombra's magic and the curse on the Crystal Empire/Kingdom. It should be covered maybe on Sombra's page and probably on the Magic page, but not on afflictions. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 03:49, December 2, 2012 (UTC)
Agreed. Steph physarum (talk) Filly_Rarity_crop_S1E23.png 03:51, December 2, 2012 (UTC)
Actually, I suppose "afflictions" can also be used to refer to curses, and I'm not sure if it's worth renaming the page to make that explicit. It should at least be made clear when entries are of magical/curse origin, and they should be covered on other relevant pages. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 04:18, December 2, 2012 (UTC)
Even if we keep Sombra-related entries in Afflictions and properly document them, we have to devise a proper section name. I suppose it could be "Sombra's magic", and then subdivided into "Effect on Crystal Ponies" and "Effect on unicorn horns" or something. When people are ruled by cruelty and oppression, it is only natural that they forget about the past as it causes them pain to try and remember it. There are several terms for this which are "Memory Inhibition", "Traumatic Amnesia", "Psychogenic Amnesia", and "Retrograde Amnesia". Also, the fact that it was very easy for them to remember the past after experiencing happiness is the second reason why I called it Acute Amnesia.--Arisaka (talk) 04:50, December 2, 2012 (UTC)
I definitely think there should be something about Sombra in Afflictions, and I see your point. I just have qualms about calling it an actual mental disorder, because that would be like listing obsessive compulsive disorder and saying Twilight Sparkle has it, as seen in Lesson Zero. Even if the characters show real-life symptoms, the show doesn't explicitly diagnose them, so I believe we can't do the same. Whatever caused the memory loss of the Crystal Ponies and whether or not we have official info on what was wrong with them, It is an irrefutable fact that the Crystal Ponies clearly suffered from Amnesia. So even though the information is rather speculative, I'm very confident that it's correct nonetheless.--Arisaka (talk) 05:08, December 2, 2012 (UTC)
Instead of relating it to real-life terms, just describe what it looks like. Say they can't remember because it was a sad time or whatever, just don't label it amnesia because the show never said that. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 05:24, December 2, 2012 (UTC)
It's not irrefutable at all. It's very hard to apply real diseases to fictional magical ponies. You'd be hard-pressed to diagnose amnesia in real animals, let alone fictional ones. That's why it's best to describe the show as it's depicted. Whenever I come across something like this, I simply stick to what's said and shown in the episode. –Throwy 07:05, December 2, 2012 (UTC)

I still don't think "collective amnesia" is a suitable way of putting it (referring to the latest version of the page). I'm in favour of "Sombra's magic". Steph physarum (talk) Filly_Rarity_crop_S1E23.png 01:23, December 5, 2012 (UTC)

"Amnesia" would be accurate too, though Applejack uses "collective amnesia". –Throwy 18:42, December 5, 2012 (UTC)
She does say that, but she's likening the behaviour of the Crystal Ponies to collective amnesia, not straight-out stating that they have that mental condition. Also, readers may have more trouble looking for information if the info was titled "collective amnesia" instead of something more general like "Sombra's magic". There's no proof that Sombra used magic directly on the Crystal Ponies because the only things we saw him do was keep them in chains and curse the Empire into Purgatory for 1000 years. Unless of course the curse is what caused the amnesia.--Arisaka (talk) 08:59, December 7, 2012 (UTC)
That's quite true. Hm... "Sombra's effect on the Crystal Ponies"? Steph physarum (talk) Filly_Rarity_crop_S1E23.png 11:27, December 7, 2012 (UTC)
That's "Oppression" which, unsurprisingly, loops back around to "Repression" and "Amnesia".--Arisaka (talk) 03:08, December 8, 2012 (UTC)
It's precisely that leap of faith in the logic that I object to. Steph physarum (talk) Filly_Rarity_crop_S1E23.png 03:51, December 8, 2012 (UTC)
