:I would add my usual spiel: vandalism is a tiny problem on this wiki. What is up with all the fear-mongering? I spend maybe 1% of my time dealing with vandalism, and over two-thirds of my time doing cleanup. -[[User talk:Throwawaytv|Throwawaytv]] 07:26, October 7, 2011 (UTC) |

+ | {{oppose}} - I've been in this Wiki long and have seen vandalism. I try to fix it, but someone other than myself reverts it back like he's been refreshing [[Special:RecentChanges]] every 3 seconds, and bans the IP which is good since I was not an admin back then. The reported vandalism doesn't happen after a long time, and even some of the time, never again. This wiki doesn't need it, at least for now, since it is small, somewhat dirty, and very basic. The fact that it is makes it easy to clean up, and easy to report the user/IP if a non-admin. The fact that this wiki needs a '''lot''' of work means we can't risk '''any''' collateral damage to happen at all, else it would fail to attract. Maybe at a time where there might be a risk that we'd lose a lot of data, such as extremely advanced templates and coding, then it's probably a good time to introduce it. {{User:Denmax/Signature}} 07:41, October 7, 2011 (UTC) |
Revision as of 07:41, 7 October 2011
I propose that we give an admin on this wiki the Checkuser right, which will allow them to check user's IP addresses and weed out sockpuppets that are used for vandalism/ban evasion.
Wikia have suggested me to make a forum like this to help them consider, so here it is. Please keep this discussion as civil as possible - it will improve our chances of obtaining the tool.
Checkuser would be useful because it would allow for easier discovery of sockpuppets of users that are used for disruption, which are strictly disallowed, and therefore enforce necessary bans in order to prevent further disruption. What's more, dynamic IP ranges responsible for disruption could be identified, and an appropriate range block could be issued. We've had to put up with sockpuppetry in chat quite a few times, and sometimes, it's not so straightforward deciding or not whether an account is a sockpuppet or not. With Checkuser, it will be.
On the subject of who to give it to, not to be arrogant, but I would recommend myself, because I have ample experience with this tool on the CoD wiki, and therefore I know how to use it and also know what to look out for. I'm not saying other people wouldn't be able to figure out how to use it, but off the bat I have experience with what is quite a tricky and powerful tool.
Any thoughts?

Support I agree CoD. And you are probably the most knowledgeable with this, so I propose you get it as well. Shadowdemon137 18:50, October 6, 2011 (UTC)
Support I'd agree giving it to Callofduty4, he's pretty experianced with it. That is assuming we're allowed the tools to begin with... Template:Sig/Smuff 19:37, October 6, 2011 (UTC)
Support Although I'm not an admin, I believe Callofduty4 will do well with the tools. --Bullet Francisco (Talk) (Contribs) (Edit Count) (Email) 20:31, October 6, 2011 (UTC)
Support It would help out a lot on this wiki-Mylittlewut 21:56, October 6, 2011 (UTC)
Oppose if the checkuser privileges apply wiki-wide and aren't limited to the chat. I don't see the need for this for the actual wiki portions of this site; we're pretty good at blocking people very quickly once they actually misbehave, and not based on a suspicion that they might be repeat offenders waiting to attack. I'm especially wary of blocking whole IP ranges because of the danger of accidentally shutting out people who've done nothing wrong besides residing in the wrong virtual neighbourhood.
Now, from what I understand this request is mostly about the chat, and I'm on the chat very rarely, so it's possible I don't understand why this would be a necessary evil. I can also see that I'm in the minority here, so if someone does get checkuser powers, I suppose they should go to someone who's in the chat frequently, which Callofduty4 can certainly lay claim to. --Tulipclaymore 22:35, October 6, 2011 (UTC)
- Checkuser is forced to work on a suspicion basis. There's really no other way to use the tool - it's to confirm your suspicions that a user is using a sockpuppet account to cause trouble. Blocking IP ranges can be done very accurately and with minimal collateral damage should the range in which an dynamic IP shifts be identified. --Callofduty4 00:18, October 7, 2011 (UTC)
- My point stands: I'm not comfortable with any "collateral damage" when it is needless in the first place; people should be dealt with when they cause trouble. There's a reason the tool isn't standard issue; it's not that I don't trust you personally to use it responsibly, but more that I'm not comfortable with anyone using it unless there's signficant disruptive behaviour, which I don't feel there is. You asked for opinions, this is mine. --Tulipclaymore 01:03, October 7, 2011 (UTC)
Strongly oppose. There is very little vandalism. I have seen admins on other wikis who blatantly disregard the Wikia TOS and I think our contributors are safer if our admins don't have the checkuser right. -Throwawaytv 07:19, October 7, 2011 (UTC)
