Was the journal a lie?[]

Here's a thought, how do we know Sombra's account of his life is the truth? It almost seems as if he WANTED someone to find it which makes one wonder if the journal wasn't part of some last resort gambit to revive himself if he was ever defeated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ronin6401 (talkcontribs)

Dead or not?[]

I know I'm one of the few that think this, but I genuinely believe Sombra isn't dead. I mean, he turned from shadow to solid, who knows; maybe he did it again. Sure, the horn flying away is suspicious, but maybe that was the doing of the Crystal Heart so he would have a tougher time using his magic to exert control over the crystal ponies again. -- This is Jonny Manz, signing off! 22:26, January 23, 2013 (UTC)

I'll give reasons as to why I think he is and we weren't meant to debate it (still, nopony's stopping you from writing fanfics about it, but good luck coming up with a defeat scene for him, unless you want to pull a Timberwolf)

1.) He was NOT turned to shadow again. We saw a flashback of how that happened and what it looked like. He turns to a dark shadowy smoke with his head still intact. At the end of The Crystal Empire Part 2, rays of light come from him (LIGHT, not shadow) and he shatters to pieces. I think his horn was meant to show that his head wasn't intact this time so we wouldn't think this a repeat of last time.

2.) Princess Cadance said that Sombra wouldn't return once she, the Crystal Ponies, and Crystal Heart were through with him. "The Crystal Heart has returned. Use the light and love within you to ensure that King Sombra does not."

3.) If he can come back together from that, like the T-1000 or Majin Buu (and even they weren't indestructible, T-1000 fell into lava and Kid Buu was completely annihilated in an attack that people actually combined fan videos to make it seem like Goku kills Sombra) then it probably wouldn't take him long to attack the Crystal Empire again. And if that can't permanently defeat him, what can? We can assume Celestia and Luna didn't want to imprison him again for fear that he'd cast the curse again. If they retconned Sombra's death and brought him back, they'd have difficulty coming up with another defeat for him. (Besides, we're getting another Crystal Empire episode soon, and from the sound of things it'll be Sombra-free, maybe they'll confirm it there)

4.) No return value. Sombra is a flat character, a dark presence like Sauron, and many were unimpressed by his lack of screentime and dialog.

Now, as for the horn thing, Sombra was in shadow form when he regenerated, and in any event maybe even being chopped to pieces by a katana might not be able to kill him if he retains that power in unicorn form (we'll never know), but maybe it's that only the power of love and light like the Crystal Heart can, as it's his weakness. (think monsters from Supernatural, many of them only have a few ways of killing them, only a few weaknesses).

Now some people probably pounced on the Timberwolves shattering to pieces and coming back together like Dry Bones. But like I said, besides Spike was still able to kill the Timberwolf by making him choke on a rock, which was far less spectacular than what Sombra got but equally effective.

Besides, think about it. Whatever happened to the Timberwolves and Windigoes, they were minor villains on the level of beasts. Sombra was a major antagonist and until he came along, G1 (which infinitely pales in comparison to Friendship is Magic) was more hardcore coz they killed off the equally dark and violent Tirek (and apparently one other villain). Does G4 want to say they're less hardcore than an inferior generation? (though apparently Nightmare Moon is counted as a separate entity from Luna if she's going to be returning to possess Celestia in the comics, atleast on a scale of Carnage and Venom, still the fact that she's returning raises some questions as to whether she was really "killed" when the Elements restored Luna (maybe arc villain resurrects the evil from Tartarus), still it was more along the lines of purifying Luna so it's hardly ever counted) Besides, I'd be disappointed if they did do a retcon, Sombra's my third most favorite villain death next to Jonah King from Drive Angry and Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars, beating fourth place of Voldemort.

Basically, this is the "Is Dimentio dead" debate all over again, and last I checked that debate winded down. Ghostkaiba297 (talk) 18:07, January 24, 2013 (UTC)

Still, there is the possibility he's got a Horcrux somewhere outside the Crystal Empire. (But they've already played the "disembdodied" card with him) Ghostkaiba297 (talk) 02:09, January 25, 2013 (UTC)
Oh, and the horn thing I don't think is a valid argument because it is not indestructible, remember it got amputated by the barrier before. We didn't see it destroyed onscreen but we can assume all pieces of him dissolved midflight. Ghostkaiba297 (talk) 19:04, January 30, 2013 (UTC)
Or not, they've confirmed he is dead Ghostkaiba297 (talk) 00:46, February 26, 2013 (UTC)
I read that as "he's not going to appear in any future episodes" but for purposes of your headcanon, I think it'd be safe to assume he also died (I'm not, but meh)-- This is Jonny Manz, signing off! 00:47, February 26, 2013 (UTC)
I read that "She confirmed he was KilledOffForReal". Trading cards might speculate on the subject but we've got WordOfGod that he is dead.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Ghostkaiba297 (talkcontribs)
I suppose in this case, we'll just have to agree to disagree.-- This is Jonny Manz, signing off! 19:26, April 14, 2013 (UTC)

Hmmm... Word Of God says that he's dead. But merchandise seems to be implying he might still return, due to his horn remaining intact. I thought he was dead, but I'm not sure anymore. But until we get further details, what I'm speculating is that he was indeed killed by the crystal heart's power. However, his horn might hold the key to a possible resurrection.

Creators of the cards probably were speculating and saying what many believed about him, and word never reached them of what Meghan said Ghostkaiba297 (talk) 20:18, May 27, 2013 (UTC)

Thousand years?[]

The story goes that he took one thousand years ago, and was banished to the frozen north... And although the spoken story doesn't say it, the video shows that Celestia AND Luna defeat him (presumably with the Elements of Harmony). But how can this be? Luna was banished for one thousand years as well, but returns before the Crystal Empire AND Sombra. Has anyone asked Hasbro or LF about this time line mismatch? If so, what was the answer? 74.103.154.150 04:19, March 30, 2013 (UTC)

Hmmm... maybe she was being approximate for Sombra. Because the Crystal Empire would be set atleast 1 or 2 years after Nightmare Moon, since it's summer in Episode 3, winter in Episode 11, fall in Episode 13, and spring or summer (unclear which) in all other episodes except Episode 37, where it's winter again Ghostkaiba297 (talk) 05:29, March 30, 2013 (UTC)
A thousand years is not exactly the exact number. It well could have been twenty years before Luna became corrupted, or perhaps even the week before. It seems to have been a time of some upheaval for equestria, entities appearing and kingdoms forming and all and such.
Perhaps Sombra cast some kind of spell/curse on Luna, making her bitterness grow until she became Nightmare Moon. It would also explain how the Elements of Harmony turned her back into Luna. It also makes the Elements look better, because otherwise they're basically tools for taking away freewill. Cris joe (talk) 9:30, August 17,2013 (EST)
The EoH did not turn her "back" into Luna. NMM actually IS Luna. The "princess Luna" the EoH changed her into is a false "friendly" facade, an amnesiac who can't even remember what was done to her... just like Celestia likes it. talk2ty 12:04, May 30, 2014 (UTC)
Seriously? She remembered turning into Nightmare Moon, the way she apologized to Celestia. She remembered being jealous of Celestia as mentioned in For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils. Ghostkaiba297 (talk) 14:53, June 1, 2014 (UTC)
I had not seen For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils at the time I posted this comment, actually just saw it on Saturday. This means that Luna has amnesia that comes and goes (allowing her to make reference to NMM in one episode, while utterly forgetting it in another) or it fits into my alternate theory: that in front of Celestia, she pretends to be amnesiac so Celestia will underestimate her. If an injustice was done to Luna, being aware of it and remembering it could lead to resentment and rebellion coming back, so it's better to play dumb until she has enough power to resist. talk2ty 17:55, June 2, 2014 (UTC)
I agree Sombra, in his debut, was a rather flat villain, which I felt was a tragic waste of potential. But after the origin story they provided for Sombra, along with another hint that he wasn't truly gone, I feel Sombra is deserving of an encore performanceMidnight Blaze V (talk) 04:09, July 13, 2015 (UTC)
I have to disagree. If the theory that Sombra created the Alicorn Amulet and he is truly just like Sauron, then Sombra may have put his conscience into it and will return in at least thousands of years later.-- Nighlocktheawesome, out! Peace! 08:30, September 26, 2017 (UTC)
Well, seeing as how there's been nothing to indicate that Sombra has anything remotely to do with the Alicorn Amulet-the thing hasn't even been touched upon since it's debut-I don't think we have to worry about that.--Kilmarnock228 (talk) 21:35, September 26, 2017 (UTC)

I do hope the show can use him again somehow. After all, Jim Miller did hint that the show staff could do better with him in terms of character use than the comic unit.Austin012599 (talk) 03:57, March 16, 2018 (UTC)

When exactly did he say that? Can you provide a link? --Kilmarnock228 (talk) 04:24, March 16, 2018 (UTC)
At King Sombra’s page, when he was asked by a Twitter user if Sombra and Tirek were the redeemable type.Austin012599 (talk) 04:00, March 17, 2018 (UTC)
Well, that comment doesn't really suggest that he thinks the show crew can do better than the comics staff-he just seems to have indicated that he wanted to keep things open. Plus, that was a good seven months before Siege of the Crystal Empire came out.--Kilmarnock228 (talk) 21:46, March 17, 2018 (UTC)

Alicorn?[]

Is it possible that Sombra is an alicorn? He has a robe over his body, which could hide wings, if they existed. On a further note, in Princess Twilight Sparkle, Zecora said that the potion could only be used with alicorn magic. Twilight used the dark magic that Celestia showed her in The Crystal Empire. Sombra uses the same type of magic. --ILoveTogekiss (talk) 00:16, April 16, 2015 (UTC)

Season 9 return[]

So now we've seen him in Season 9, it's time to start speculating again.

Is he being revived, or is he a clone? (Cloning at least is confirmed canon already) Is he even real or is it some kind of test or training exercise? Who revived/cloned him? What will the Mane 6's magic blast do to him? Re-kill him? Turn him to stone? Reform him, if it's possible?

Also, to anyone who continues to view the comics as canon: What's your interpretation for this? His evil side split off? Clone? Or is it possibly Sombra from Reflections? KillRoy231 (talk) 03:14, February 28, 2019 (UTC)

My thoughts, from a comment on the Siege of the Crystal Empire page.--Kilmarnock228 (talk) 04:18, February 28, 2019 (UTC)
I don't think it's the Reflections Sombra, as not a lot of the comics make their way into the show. However, his revival could be pulled off in a similar way that it was in the comics. BiggerNate91 (talk) 15:11, February 28, 2019 (UTC)
