People have been saying there are too many mods and not enough room for potential new mods, so here's a forum threads for people to float ideas to reduce the number of mods, starting with the obvious suggestion of removing mod  rights from mods that have been inactive on the chatroom for more than (arbitrary number of) days. I thought the blog was satire more than anything, and didn't expect anyone to take it serious. http://i.imgur.com/B0lGGoQ.gifOz   15:44, June 21, 2015 (UTC)
What Ozank said. However, the "We already have too many mods" argument was a real and gross issue in early 2014 and maybe late 2013, as was the "User X is not ready" argument. Doing away with the nomination forum seems to have put an end to those, but there was a time when Moderators were unfortunately regarded (by themselves and others) as privileged figures with thrones to protect, for which reason numbers were a greater concern than competence. Pictogram voting comment Comment - I personally don't see any problem in lapsing rights for inactive users. However, it might be better just to remove their names from the mod list. Let them keep their rights, but remove them from the Chat Policy Page. If we must lapse rights, I'd like to see it done properly personally. So, message the user on their talkpage explaining their rights are going to be lapsed unless they get in touch soon. If they don't get back in touch for 2 to 3 weeks, then sure. 343TheGuiltyProphet - Talk 18:33, June 21, 2015 (UTC)

Pictogram voting comment Comment - The entire "too many mods" argument is a worn and tired one at that. This was a 2014 problem when there was always at least two mods in the chat, even at very inactive hours. When it was active, you could see seven or eight. On one occasion there was TEN in at once. But, as of late, a few moderators have decided to leave, and a large chunk of them are now inactive. If you want proof of this, just look at the moderator list. By my recent calculations were have about nine, maybe ten active moderators and there have already been numerous cases where there were no mods at all in the chat, albeit later in the evening in North America. (And on a few of these occasions, a troller has made their way out of the rotted woodwork and reaped havoc upon the chat. One incident lasted forty-five minutes before a mod came along.) So no, there are not "too many mods", as we stand, I say we are on the very edge of having too little.  UnknownProdigyhttp://i.imgur.com/OoYA0kr.gif 22:05, June 21, 2015 (UTC)

Pictogram voting comment Comment I agree with UP that this seemed like more of an issue in 2014, however, there are still a list of people who are inactive. What to do about it? I don't know, but at this moment, in the past week, I have been on at different times, and the amount of moderators seems to be stable, ranging anywhere from 3 to 6. As for inactive mods, I do agree that after a certain amount of time, something should be done. I don't know what that time frame would be, but this issue has been talked about before. Plus, we just lost 3 mods. The opportunity for new mods always comes and goes as time goes on. As for having too little mods, that really is just a gamble based off a certain time. At 12 AM Eastern Time, there could be 8 mods. And some nights, they could all be busy, who knows. Sorting out the active versus the inactive times, sounds like a good idea. Hopefully in the future, this problem does not arise again. As of now though, I think it's fine, despite the fact that 3 people are no longer mods.   Sgt. Conclusion[]

Going by the above comments, it's hard to reach a conclusion. So I've made a quick break down below, if people would like to participate. 343TheGuiltyProphet - Talk 18:09, July 18, 2015 (UTC)

Should we lapse rights for inactive moderators?

Oppose[]

Symbol oppose vote Oppose - I'd like to point out that even if we had a system of tracking how long a mod has been inactive for, it will be very tedious to manage. Is it really worth scouring the logs just to see when a particular user last joined chat? As much as a good thing it might seem to be for lapsing rights, regardless of opinion, the actual feasibility of it is very unlikely to be well managed. http://i.imgur.com/B0lGGoQ.gifOz   18:12, July 18, 2015 (UTC)

Neutral[]

Symbol neutral vote Neutral - I'm unsure about this, I'm stuck in the middle. I can see the benefits but then I can also see the negatives. Why don't we just remove inactive mods from the mod list on Project:Chat instead? It'll be a lot easier to manage and it's quick to do. 343TheGuiltyProphet - Talk 18:15, July 18, 2015 (UTC)

Discussion[]

Pictogram voting comment Comment I think it's time to remove some inactive mods. They just keep other users who deserve the position from getting it. Plus if they are inactive, especially for a long period of time, they don't need their mod status. Like 343 said, we can just go through the mods list on Project:Chat. I think 3 months of inactivity calls for a warning, then after a month and still no activity, then it's time to discuss removing their rights, sounds pretty fair right? Inactive mods may as well not be mods. As I said, they just keep users who actually are active and deserve the position from getting it. Just my opinion~ http://orig02.deviantart.net/047d/f/2015/036/7/c/pinkie_pie_wedding_dance_by_botchan_mlp-d8grenf.gif Kit Cat Talk Contrib.http://orig09.deviantart.net/dde7/f/2015/036/c/5/princess_cadance_wedding_dance_by_botchan_mlp-d8gszi7.gif

How do you suggest we tell if they're inactive or not? Lots of mods don't edit, and they're not required to in order to maintain their position. http://i.imgur.com/B0lGGoQ.gifOz   12:07, July 19, 2015 (UTC)
I think I should just add though that we don't have a set limit to the number of moderators here so inactive moderators shouldn't have an impact on new moderators. If you have someone in mind, you're always welcome to leave an admin a message. 343TheGuiltyProphet - Talk 12:19, July 19, 2015 (UTC)

Pictogram voting comment Comment I would like to also add this here: some chat moderators have really big "bad records" that an admin would him to literally promote/demote him/her repeatedly. I will not state which chat moderators are these. I mean, I though admins look for the ones with the "fairly clean" records since they expect those users to have the proper attitude and behavior from the start.
