Jazz Hooves is a female Earth pony and supporting character in the My Little Pony Generation 5 special My Little Pony: Make Your Mark and subsequent Generation 5 media. She is a resident of the seaside Earth pony town of Maretime Bay, working as a manicurist/pedicurist at Pipp Petals' Mane Melody beauty salon.

Development and design[]

Jazz Hooves' name is similar to the G1 Earth pony Jazzie, the G2 Earth pony Jazzy, the G3 Earth pony Jazz Matazz, Jazz Hoof, and the Transformers character Jazz. She sometimes appears without ears in My Little Pony: Make Your Mark; animator Karmyn "SnookumsGal" Chretien explained on Discord that "Concept art had a drawing of Jazz with a big poofy head of hair that covered her ears. When translated to 3D, they couldn't keep that much hair poof, so her ears initially clipped through her hair. Clients/Directors/etc didn't like seeing her ears clip through her hair and because in her concept art/model sheet she didn't have ears drawn, they decided 'remove her ears from the rig to match concept'. This decision was finalised sometime after the first special which is why they disappeared shortly after something like Chapter 2, Ep 1 or 2."[1]

Depiction in Make Your Mark[]

In the hour-long special My Little Pony: Make Your Mark, Jazz Hooves appears as a stylist employed at Pipp Petals' beauty salon Mane Melody. She first appears giving a hooficure to a ticklish Hitch Trailblazer, and she performs Everything is Gonna Be Okay alongside Pipp and Rocky Riff.

In the Make Your Mark Chapter 2 episode Izzy Does It, Jazz observes as Pipp struggles to come up with a new song. In Growing Pains, she and her fellow Earth ponies deal with their out-of-control plant magic after Hitch places restrictions on its use. In Portrait of a Princess, Jazz welcomes Queen Haven to the Mane Melody salon and gives her a hooficure. In Ali-Conned, she helps Pipp attract more attention on social media when her viewership numbers start to dwindle. She is briefly seen in Hoof Done It? when Misty ducks into Mane Melody in an attempt to hide from Zipp Storm.

In My Little Pony: Winter Wishday, Jazz briefly appears celebrating Winter Wishday with the rest of Maretime Bay. She also appears in My Little Pony: Bridlewoodstock. In Mane Smelody, she struggles with being honest with Pipp about how her new hoof polish smells terrible. In Nightmare on Mane Street, she and Rocky get very competitive about winning a Nightmare night contest. In Roots of All Evil Pt. 1, Jazz has her cutie mark stolen by Opaline. In Roots of All Evil Pt. 2, she later joins everypony singing in support of Sunny Starscout, and regains her cutie mark upon Opaline's defeat.

Depiction in Tell Your Tale[]

The 2D animated YouTube web series My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale, which is set after the events of My Little Pony: A New Generation, marks Jazz Hooves' first appearance in Generation 5, and she makes multiple supporting and background appearances in the series. In Welcome to Mane Melody, she appears styling ponies' manes and singing Let Out Your Light. In The Unboxing of Izzy, she briefly appears painting with Posey. In Clip Trot, she helps Pipp record her rendition of the Bunny Hip Hop for ClipTrot. In It's T.U.E.S. Day, she reluctantly gives a hooficure to Izzy Moonbow's inanimate friend Señor Butterscotch. In Maretime Bay Day 2.0, she appears in a recorded video on Pipp's computer making cotton candy. In Alicorn Issues, she helps give Sunny Starscout a makeover.

In On Your Cutie Marks, Jazz takes part in the first Equestria Games since the pony races reunited. In All That Jazz, Jazz struggles to find inspiration for new hooficure designs, and Izzy helps her find a new muse. In Nightmare Night Party, she wears a hodgepodge of different costume pieces to Pipp's costume party/fashion show. In Baby Critters Club, Jazz babysits the Mane 5's critter friends while they are out at a fancy dinner party. In Filly Filling, she takes part in Maretime Bay's first annual pie-eating contest. In A Day in the Life, she sings and dances along to Every New Day (Is the Best Day Ever). In Bridlewood Spog, she serves food at Pipp's beauty product launch party. In Opaline Alone, she appears in a hooficure tutorial video. In Ponytropico, she appears in an online advertisement for the Ponytropico resort. In The Rise and Fall, Jazz receives Opaline's message on her phone and her cutie mark is among those in Opaline's stolen collection, but she later regains it after the Fire Alicorn is defeated. In Jazz Hearts Rocky, Jazz is shown to have developed a crush on Rocky Riff, and with some help from Pipp and her friends, manages to ask him out. In Bunnisi Beauties, she and Rocky are overwhelmed with the effort of styling multiple bunnies for an Easter celebration. In P + P = BFFs, Jazz is seen riding on a boat with Rocky.

Other depictions[]

In My Little Pony: The Podcast, Jazz Hooves serves as Pipp Petals' producer and co-host. She also appears in the mobile game My Little Pony: Mane Merge.

IDW comics[]

In Issue #12 of the 2022 My Little Pony comic book series, Jazz serves as a central character in Hitch's investigation into Pansy Silverbell's disappearance. She used to be in a baking club with Pansy and Dahlia. When the pressures of constantly winning a baking competition threatened Pansy's friendships, she left Maretime Bay, which only Jazz knew about. Pansy secretly returned to Maretime Bay sometime later until Hitch's investigation prompted Pansy to reconnect with Jazz and Dahlia.
