My Little Pony: Kenbucky Roller Derby #2 is the second issue of IDW Publishing's My Little Pony: Kenbucky Roller Derby comic miniseries. In this issue, Sunny Starscout holds tryouts for her roller derby team and challenges the team that rejected her to compete at the upcoming titular roller derby competition.
Summary[]
Sunny Starscout holds tryouts for her roller derby team, but the participants Sniffles and Oopsie Daisy are not very skilled or graceful on the track; only the Pegasnails show any potential or enthusiasm for the sport. After a practice run results in failure (much to the delight of the spectating Sandy Shore Slammers), Pipp Petals pulls a frustrated Sunny aside and tells her the participants are trying their best and to be patient with them.
While Sunny and Pipp's backs are turned, the Sandy Shore Slammers lure Sniffles and Oopsie Daisy away and convince them to join their team instead of Sunny's team with a (mostly fabricated) story about the greatest roller derby competition in Equestria: the Kenbucky Roller Derby. Sunny catches the Slammers trying to steal her potential team members away and gets into a heated argument with Tina Two Bits, a member of the Slammers. She challenges Tina and the rest of the Slammers to see whose team is superior at the upcoming Kenbucky Roller Derby.
Sunny's friends are shocked to learn about her challenge to the Slammers; Zipp Storm is particularly upset and scolds Sunny for being goaded into a competition she is not prepared for. Zipp quickly apologizes for her harsh words, and the Mane 5 come together to form a proper team, with Sunny, Zipp, and the Pegasnails as skaters and Pipp as manager.
Some time later, Tracy Tailspin is officially brought on to coach Sunny's team, and Pipp rallies the team's spirits with her new song Quad Squad, inspiring the team to skate with more unity. However, when Tracy learns that Sunny plans to enter her team in the Kenbucky Roller Derby, she gets extremely upset and tells Sunny she is not ready for such a competition, calling her out on her pride. Sunny tells Tracy that her entering the Kenbucky Derby is not a matter of pride, but Tracy refuses to listen and storms out.
The next day, Tracy, having cooled off after storming out the day before, returns to explain herself. She tells Sunny that the Kenbucky Roller Derby ended her career as a roller derby star, but she understands Sunny's reasons for wanting to compete in it. To that end, Tracy agrees to stay on as coach for Sunny's derby team and has furnished their practice space with brand new equipment, and Izzy Moonbow and Hitch Trailblazer have joined as team members.
Quotes[]
- Pipp Petals: What crawled into your horseshoes and died?
- Sunny Starscout: Ugh, Pipp! I just thought tryouts would be better!
- Pipp Petals: I saw Pegasnails blazing around the track, two ponies trying their best, and Zipp coming to the rescue. It wasn't perfect, but they tried!
- Sunny Starscout: It was a disaster!
- Pipp Petals: No. It just wasn't as easy as thought it would be. We can improve together.
- Tina Two Bits: [narrating] It started around, I dunno, 53 to 115 years ago? Something like that. The earliest rollerponies in Equestria lived in Kenbucky. They had just invented wheels and weren't sure what to do with them until one of them was like...
- Kenbucky Pony: Let's SKATE!
- Sunny Starscout: That doesn't even make sense! You're telling me that wheels weren't invented in Equestria until a bunch of roller derby ponies did it?!
- Sunny Starscout: You don't own derby, Tina Two Bits! You don't get to say who's a real rollerpony and who isn't!
- Tina Two Bits: Y'know what, Sunny? You're right I don't get to say. Why don't you--
- Sunny Starscout: Why don't me and my team prove it to you at the Kenbucky Derby?! That's exactly what I was going to say.
- Zipp Storm: You let her goad you into entering a team you don't even have into a competition you can't even win?!
- Sunny Starscout: Et tu, Zippus?
- Zipp Storm: Fine! I'll go talk to her, but I'm not apologizing!
- Zipp Storm: I'm so sorry, Sunny! I put my hoof in my mouth!
- Sunny Starscout: I covered my hooves in competitive peanut butter and put in my mouth!
- Zipp Storm: That doesn't really--
- Sunny Starscout: Yeah, it doesn't work.
- Sunny Starscout: You think I'm being too bossy?
- Pipp Petals: Not bossy, exactly, but I do think you could be a little more--
- Tracy Tailspin: Fun? Enthusiastic? Encouraging? All of the above?
- Sunny Starscout: We'll be ready for the Kenbucky Derby in no time!
- Tracy Tailspin: What. Did. You. Say.
- Tracy Tailspin: The Kenbucky Derby is no place for a brand-new team! It's where the most elite rollerponies go to face off, it's not something you enter until you're ready! Your pride is going to get you and everycreature on this team hurt!
- Sunny Starscout: It's not about pride. It's about standing up for ourselves and for any other creature who has been told they don't belong.
- Tracy Tailspin: You're on your own, kiddo. I can't watch you lead this team to misery!
- Tracy Tailspin: I was wrong yesterday, and I'd like to explain myself. I wasn't wrong about the Kenbucky Derby--if anything, I softballed just how ruthless it is. It's what ended my career, Sunny. What I was wrong about was trotting out on you. You're doing this for the right reason and...well, I wasn't.
- Tracy Tailspin: I figured our practice space and gear could use a little upgrade. Whaddya think... captain?
