My Little Pony: Kenbucky Roller Derby #3 is the third issue of IDW Publishing's My Little Pony: Kenbucky Roller Derby comic miniseries. In this issue, Tracy Tailspin shares with Sunny Starscout and her friends the story of how her career as a roller derby star came to an end.
Summary[]
After Sunny Starscout and her friends have a successful roller derby practice, team coach Tracy Tailspin calls it a day. Hitch Trailblazer notices the dynamite-shaped charm that Tracy wears around her neck; Tracy explains it is a reminder of one of the biggest regrets in her roller derby career, and she tells the story of what led to her retirement from the sport.
Some time ago, Tracy was a member of a derby team called the Dazzlebrook Dynamites. After the Dynamites' ninth consecutive win at the Kenbucky Roller Derby, Whinny Streak steps down as team captain in order to retire and passes the captain position (and the dynamite-shaped "Spirit Stick" charm) onto Tracy. Eight months ahead of the next Kenbucky Roller Derby, Tracy embraces her new role as team captain to make a new training plan for the Dynamites, but as a result, she does not practice as often as the other team members do.
Tracy builds her training plan off one of Whinny Streak's old derby formations called the "Loop-de-Loop Triple Haymaker", but trying to execute the formation only results in the Dynamites getting injured. Tracy refuses to step in as a derby player, believing her role as team captain and leading the team to its tenth consecutive Kenbucky win is more important. As time goes on, the Dynamites make very little improvement.
Eventually, the day of the Kenbucky Roller Derby arrives, and Tracy has misplaced the Spirit Stick. She calls Whinny Streak to vent about her troubles being the team captain. Whinny Streak explains that the "Triple Haymaker" formation requires all of the Dynamites, including Tracy, working together in order to succeed.
At the Kenbucky Roller Derby, Tracy apologizes to her fellow Dynamite for not acting like a proper teammate since becoming team captain. In order to make it up them, Tracy faces an opposing roller derby team by herself, resulting in a resounding defeat for the Dynamites and ending their winning streak. After the loss, Tracy finds the Spirit Stick in her derby gear bag. Tracy immediately resigns as the Dynamites' captain, but her teammates forgive her. Soon after that, Tracy retires from roller derby.
Back in present day, Tracy expresses regret over retiring from roller derby so disgracefully, but Pipp Petals, having researched Tracy's entire career, assures her that her retirement was only a tiny footnote in a career of many great achievements. As Tracy excuses Sunny and her friends for the day, she glances at a photo of her old Dazzlebrook Dynamite teammates, believing Sunny's team could become just as legendary as her old team.
Quotes[]
- Tracy Tailspin: Our speed laps were starting to get a little sluggish toward the end. No offense, Pegasnails.
- Hitch Trailblazer: What does that charm stand for?
- Tracy Tailspin: Oh, this old thing? It's just an albatross around my neck, reminding me of one of my deepest regrets in all my derby career. A dark day when I let down my teammates and left the skating spotlight altogether. That about sums it up.
- Dazzlebrook Dynamites: Light the fuse, we just can't lose! We're Dynamite-- --KABOOM!
- Whinny Streak: Your new captain is... our very own Tracy Tailspin!
- Tracy Tailspin: I promise I won't let the Dynamites down.
- Sugar Cubed: Are you going to hop back on your skates and fill in?
- Tracy Tailspin: Uhh...a captain's gotta keep an eye on everypony. If we get this right, it could be the key to this season.
- Sugar Cubed: Okay. Just remember, there's no "I" in team. Or trophy. Or Kenbucky Roller Derby!
- Tracy Tailspin: Lots of athletes have little rituals or good luck charms to help them get focused and keep away the yips.
- Pipp Petals: No, not the yips! What are the yips?
- Hitch Trailblazer: Everycreature recognizes my sheriff badge as a sign of authority, but it can't make decisions. I do. Even if I misplaced it, I would still have a responsibility to keep Maretime Bay safe.
- Pipp Petals: Wait, what's that?
- Tracy Tailspin: Back in those days, phones had cords on 'em.
- Tracy Tailspin: I owe everypony an apology. When I became captain, I stopped acting like part of the team. There is no "I" in team, but there is one in "I'm sorry."
- Tracy Tailspin: I learned I didn't love leading, but I do love teaching. Helping everycreature find that spark inside them is so rewarding.
- Pipp Petals: When I did my research on Wikiponia, you know what I found? I found recaps of your biggest bouts, a list of trophies and titles, incredible photos, and even fun facts like your favorite skate brands. And that tiiiiny little hoofnote at the bottom? Your retirement. The memory may feel huge to you, but your story is so much bigger than one mistake.
- Tracy Tailspin: Learning from you all is an honor. You all have some of the strongest team spirit I've ever seen. And that can't be taught. No matter what comes next, everycreature here can be proud of that.
