My Little Pony: Kenbucky Roller Derby #5 is the fifth and final issue of IDW Publishing's My Little Pony: Kenbucky Roller Derby comic miniseries. In this issue, Sunny Starscout and the Maretime Bay Brawlers make it to the titular roller derby competition and face off against the Sandy Shore Slammers.
Summary[]
Sunny Starscout and the Maretime Bay Brawlers arrive at the Kenbucky Roller Derby, where their coach Tracy Tailspin runs into Whinny Streak, her old team captain on the Dazzlebrook Dynamites. Whinny has been coaching her own new team, the Baltimare Bolts, for the Kenbucky Derby. As Tracy and Whinny catch up on old times, the Baltimare Bolts invite Sunny's team to practice with them. Sunny is nervous about practicing with (and being judged by) a team that has competed in multiple Kenbucky Derbies in the past, but the Baltimare Bolts and their captain Kirby Klash are friendly and supportive.
Meanwhile, Tina Two Bits and Flank the Tank of the Sandy Shore Slammers observe the Brawlers and Bolts practicing together and think of a way to eliminate the Brawlers from the competition. They sabotage Hitch Trailblazer's roller skates so that he falls and sprains his leg, preventing him from skating with the others. With the Brawlers now short one member, they fear they will have to drop out of the Kenbucky Derby. Luckily, Misty appears to serve as Hitch's replacement; after discovering what the Slammers did, she immediately quit their team to join the Brawlers.
After another practice session between the Brawlers and the Baltimare Bolts, the Kenbucky Roller Derby finally begins. In the semifinals, the Maretime Bay Brawlers go up against the Sandy Shore Slammers. Despite the Slammers' unscrupulous tactics and aggressive skating, the Brawlers' teamwork eventually carries them to victory.
The next day, the Brawlers face the Baltimare Bolts in the final match. Despite the competitive nature of the sport, the ponies remain civil, supportive, and sportsmanlike, even congratulating each other's teams as they score points. The two teams' scores stay even all the way until time runs out, and the Baltimare Bolts narrowly win. Though Sunny's team only wins second place, she is proud of how far she and her friends have come at their first Kenbucky Derby ever, and she looks forward to doing even better at next year's Derby.
Quotes[]
- Tracy Tailspin: This rodeo's a lot bigger than it was in my day. When the Dynamites went to the Derby, we skated--
- Sunny Starscout: Uphill in the snow, wearing skates made out of cabbage and crayons, and you still managed to win?
- Whinny Streak: Tracy? Tracy Tailspin?!
- Tracy Tailspin: Whinny Streak?! I haven't seen you in ages.
- Sunny Starscout: You've skated in the Derby before?
- Kirby Klash: Sure, but we haven't won or anything--
- Max Penalty: This one is so modest! We've skated in the last four K.D.s-- three second places, one third place, and Kirby was named MVP her first year!
- Sunny Starscout: What if they're judging us and what if we embarrass Tracy and what if they're mean and spray us off the track with a giant fire hose and--
- Zipp Storm: Not the giant fire hose!
- Kirby Klash: We don't have a fire hose.
- Tina Too Bits: What if some Pegaslime accidentally got into some wheels? Can't skate with a twisted ankle, can't complete when you're down a skater...
- Tracy Tailspin: Good news? Nothin's broken. Bad news? Hitch is benched for a few weeks until the sprain heals.
- Hitch Trailblazer: You're not upset?
- Sunny Starscout: I'm sad you're hurt, but we're gonna make the best of it since we don't have enough players--
- Misty: Yes, you do. If you'll let me join, that is.
- Sunny Starscout: Hitch, we'll sit this one out of[sic] you want. Misty can still join, but we don't need to be in the Derby. What do you think?
- Hitch Trailblazer: I think you'd better wipe the rink with the Slammers!
- Captain Buck: Soooo sorry to hear about your benched skater, Starscout. League rules required a suspension, but just in case your little team tries to get revenge? If we go down a skater, we can bring Tina or Flank back in... which you probably don't want.
- Sunny Starscout: Thanks for the warning, but we're capable of winning without cheating... which you probably haven't heard of.
- Brawlipop: Get off my hinders!
- Captain Buck: Big deal. You won't score again.
- Sunny Starscout: Wouldn't be too sure about that.
- Kirby Klash: Now the title will for sure be held by an awesome team.
- Sunny Starscout: By the Brawlers, you mean.
- Kirby Klash: Let's see you try, Starscout.
- Whinny Streak: Zipp's even faster than you were.
- Tracy Tailspin: Paisley's giving her a run for her money.
- Whinny Streak: Any predictions?
- Tracy Tailspin: Pff, no way-- these kiddos always surprise me.
- Whinny Streak: They just took out my blockers.
- Tracy Tailspin: Surprise.
- Poppy-Jane Fritterling: And that's it! It's official, folks! The winner of the Kenbucky Roller Derby is-- ...the Baltimare Bolts!
- Kirby Klash: You're not disappointed?
- Sunny Starscout: Nope. I never expected us to win. I just wanted to show that we belonged here. And, well... we do!
