Depiction in the comics[]

In My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Issue #27, King Aspen proves to be the object of Twilight Sparkle and her friends' quest for the "Heart of the Forest", which they seek out after the Everfree Forest begins to encroach on the rest of Equestria. However, King Aspen is also the power behind said encroachment, seizing pony lands in order to replace those "developed" and ruined by Well-to-Do and his employees. Having received no answers to various messages sent to Princess Celestia, and failing in his own negotiations with the minotaur, Aspen reluctantly allows Twilight and her friends to make an attempt themselves. Much to his surprise, Twilight and her friends decide to support him in continued efforts to halt Well-to-Do's projects.

In Issue #28, King Aspen quickly becomes frustrated with Twilight's futile efforts to reach a peaceful solution with Well-to-Do and expresses the intent to use force. However, when his son Bramble, who had previously convinced him to hear Twilight's party out, is captured by Well-to-Do, King Aspen is forced to sign a contract to become the mascot for Well-to-Do's theme park in order to secure his son's release. During an ensuing confrontation between Well-to-Do's forces and King Aspen's subjects and allies, the king is pleasantly surprised when Well-to-Do's own barrels of organic smoothie mixture miraculously restores life to the land he had devastated and destroyed his development projects. Freed to return to his throne, King Aspen halts an angry Well-to-Do by pointing out the presence of an approaching hydra. King Aspen then withdraws the Everfree Forest plant life that he had caused to spread into the ponies' territories, and greets Princess Celestia upon her arrival.

In Issue #50, King Aspen is one of the individuals brainwashed by Accord. In Issue #61, King Aspen attends the Convocation of the Creatures, where he respectfully greets Celestia but shows apparent distrust of Thorax and his delegation of Changelings. In Issue #67, he displays similar hostility towards Tempest Shadow when she passes through his kingdom during her travels. In Issue #75 and Issue #77, King Aspen is seen in flashbacks during the ancient conflict between the otherworldly invader Cosmos and a group of allies that also includes Princess Celestia, Princess Luna, a reluctant Discord, Queen Novo, and the King of Abyssinia.

In My Little Pony: Friends Forever Issue #38, King Aspen is one of several non-pony guests at a cotillion held in Canterlot. In My Little Pony Holiday Special 2019, he briefly appears pulling a sleigh filled with Hearth's Warming gifts.

My Little Pony (mobile game)[]

King Aspen is a character in Gameloft's mobile game. His bio states "The reigning monarch of the Everfree Forest will do anything to protect his homeland -- and his family."

Personality[]

King Aspen is a regal but distrustful individual. He does not trust other species easily out of obligations to protect his homeland, going as far as to encroach ponies' settlements with the Everfree Forest's plant life. He however cares about his family, namely his son Bramble, deeply. Despite his pride, he is still reasonable enough to understand the errors of his ways.

Quotes[]

"You see, the Everfree Forest is a very delicate ecosystem. We that live here...not just the deer, but every organism from the tiniest grasshopper to the largest hydra, need the land that we have to survive."
— To Twilight Sparkle, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Issue #27
"I think the aggressive approach might be the right one… I may not be able to reclaim the soil he's wasted, but I can show him the forest is not to be challenged further. But this is where your involvement ends, little ponies. It's time for you to leave."
— To the Mane Six, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Issue #28
"The minotaur wants a fight? I'll take him head-to-head! Horns to horns."
— About Well-to-Do, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Issue #28
"...Do you ever feel as though you're simply not part of the story?'"
— To the Queen of Abyssinia, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Issue #61
