Moody Root is a male Earth pony and supporting character in the hour-long special My Little Pony: Rainbow Roadtrip. He is a resident of Hope Hollow and next-door neighbor of Mr. and Mrs. Hoofington.
Depiction in the series[]
In My Little Pony: Rainbow Roadtrip, Moody Root appears as an elderly resident of the gray town of Hope Hollow. He first appears bumping into Mr. and Mrs. Hoofington on a sidewalk before angrily rebuking them and walking away. During The End of the Rainbow, he appears repairing a stallion's apricot cart and smiling at the Hoofingtons at a previous Rainbow Festival. Later, he attends the final Rainbow Festival in which the Rainbow Generator breaks down, turning the town gray in the process.
Later, when Pinkie Pie expresses interest in Moody Root's apricot trees from the Hoofingtons' backyard, he catches her through a knothole in his fence and tells her to stay away from his trees. Fluttershy convinces him to share his fruit with his next-door neighbors to make apricot pies. He agrees and rekindles his friendship with the Hoofingtons. After taste-testing their pies, he and the Hoofingtons bring a cart of apricot pies to serve at the Rainbow Festival to the town center, where he asks Petunia Petals for cookbooks.
When color begins to return to Hope Hollow, Pinkie Pie helps Moody Root sell pies from his cart, which regain color as well. Moody Root regains his own color and smiles at the Hoofingtons during Mayor Sunny Skies' speech before he restarts the Rainbow Festival. When color fully returns to the town during the song Living in Color, he appears serving pies and watching with the other residents as the Mane Six leave in their repaired hot air balloon.

Mobile game description[]
Moody Root grows the best apricots in Hope Hollow--and gets quite grumpy if anyone gets near his tree. Maybe he could be persuaded to share...
Merchandise[]
In My Little Pony: Essential Handbook: A Magical Guide for Everypony, Moody Root is mentioned in the four-page recap of Rainbow Roadtrip's story on pages 56-59.
Personality[]
When first introduced, Moody Root appears to be as dour as most other residents in Hope Hollow following the town's loss of color, if not more so. A gifted fruit grower, he takes great care in growing his apricots and is very protective of them, displayed by how he refuses to share them with his neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Hoofington. Unlike the Hoofingtons, he is still able to grow his fruit successfully even after the town loses its color. As evidenced by flashbacks in The End of the Rainbow and in photos in the Hope Hollow Rainbow Room, Moody Root seems to have had a better relationship with the Hoofingtons before the town turned gray and is implied to have been very friendly, as seen when he repairs a stallion's cart. After Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy convince him to share his apricots to make pies with the Hoofingtons, he reconciles with them and begins adopting a more friendly persona. He also becomes more willing to visit the town library, which he previously had stopped visiting quite some time ago, asking the librarian Petunia Petals for cookbooks.
