Summary[]
Welcome to a new generation[]
The film opens with a young Earth pony filly named Sunny Starscout and her friends Hitch Trailblazer and Sprout playing with carved miniatures of Twilight Sparkle and the Mane Six. While Sunny preaches about friendship between Earth ponies, Pegasi, and unicorns, her friends say that they have been taught to fear and despise the other pony races, but Sunny dreams of one day meeting and befriending a Pegasus and a unicorn.
After Hitch and Sprout leave, Sunny, with the help of her father Argyle, sends out a letter in a floating paper lantern inviting Pegasi and unicorns to their Earth pony home of Maretime Bay. That night, Argyle, using a light projector to project pony images on Sunny's bedroom walls, once again tells her the story of Twilight Sparkle and how she and her friends spread friendship and harmony across Equestria many years ago. When Sunny asks why the pony races are no longer friends as they used to be, Argyle answers, "Maybe one day, we'll figure it out."
Peace with Pegasi, unity with unicorns[]
Several years later, Sunny, now a young adult, skates into the city and sells smoothies to ponies around town while singing the song Gonna Be My Day. She makes her way to an annual presentation showcase held by the science and technology company Canterlogic, but she is stopped by Hitch and Sprout, who are now the respective sheriff and deputy sheriff of Maretime Bay. Despite their efforts to stop Sunny from entering the presentation building, she eventually sneaks past them.
During the presentation, Phyllis Cloverleaf, the CEO of Canterlogic and Sprout's mother, presents some of the company's latest developments in anti-Pegasus and anti-unicorn technology. However, she is interrupted by Sunny, who gives a speech promoting pony unity and encourages her fellow Earth ponies to reach out to Pegasi and unicorns in friendship. Her interruption causes the automated presentation to go haywire, and as her message once again goes unheard, she is laughed and booed off the stage and escorted away by Hitch Trailblazer.
Outside, Hitch admonishes Sunny for her repeated troublemaking. Sunny tries to convince Hitch to use his position as sheriff to help her spread her message to others, but Hitch refuses, claiming the stories Argyle told her about ancient Equestria were just fabricated fairytales. He walks away, leaving Sunny demoralized.
Attack of the unicorn![]
All of a sudden, Earth ponies around Maretime Bay run and scream in terror when a unicorn enters the city. The unicorn appears before Sunny and introduces herself as Izzy Moonbow, and despite the chaos she causes with her mere presence, she remains cheerful and excited to make new friends. Sunny attempts to lead Izzy away from the various anti-unicorn security measures placed around the city, and Hitch catches her helping and fleeing with the intruder.
Sunny and Izzy take shelter inside Sunny's house, and Sunny wrestles with the excitement of finally meeting a unicorn and the realization of what she has done. As she bombards Izzy with questions about where she came from and debunking various Earth pony misconceptions about unicorns, Sunny learns that Izzy does not have any magic. When Hitch and Sprout arrive to place the both of them under arrest, Izzy inadvertently causes a distraction that allows them to sneak away undetected.
Once they are outside the Maretime Bay city limits, Izzy explains to Sunny that the unicorns' magic mysteriously disappeared a long time ago. Sunny suggests they travel to the Pegasus city of Zephyr Heights to find out what happened to the unicorns' magic and find a way to restore it. Izzy is unsure about seeking out the Pegasi, but through the song I'm Lookin' Out For You, she and Sunny slowly come to trust one another.
Meanwhile, back in Maretime Bay, Hitch decides to go after Sunny, and he leaves Sprout in charge of keeping the citizens safe while he is gone. While Sprout is initially bitter over how loved and respected Hitch is compared to him, his mother Phyllis encourages him to embrace his new position as temporary sheriff and the respect it commands.
Welcome to Zephyr Heights[]
As Sunny and Izzy make their way through a narrow rock valley, they hear something seemingly pursuing them at high speed and race up the mountain in order to escape it. At the mountaintop, they encounter a white Pegasus mare with colorful wings, who is just as shocked to meet them as they are to meet her. When a pair of royal guards approaches, the white Pegasus quickly jumps out of sight. Upon seeing Sunny and Izzy, the guards apprehend them, sticking a tennis ball on the tip of Izzy's horn to "shield" themselves from her magic.
In the technologically advanced and social media-connected city of Zephyr Heights, where celebrity pop princess Pipp Petals is about to debut her new song, Sunny notices that none of the Pegasus citizens are flying. She and Izzy are brought before the royal family of Zephyr Heights: Queen Haven and her daughters Pipp Petals and Zipp Storm, the Pegasus that Sunny and Izzy ran into earlier. Haven is shocked to see an Earth pony and unicorn and wants to keep their presence a secret from the public, but Pipp reveals their presence to the entire city through social media. Haven assures her subjects that the invaders have been securely captured, and before Sunny can ask about magic, Haven orders her and Izzy's immediate imprisonment and the confiscation of Sunny's journal.
Back in Maretime Bay, Sprout is enjoying his new position of authority when Earth ponies show up outside the sheriff's office, increasingly concerned and panicked that more unicorns will show up. Sprout concedes that unicorns and even Pegasi showing up is indeed a possibility, and instead of calming the Earth ponies down, he tells them to give in to their fear and paranoia out of self-preservation. Through the song Danger, Danger, Sprout rallies the whole town into an angry mob under his command, ready to strike at the unicorns and Pegasi first.
The secret of the Pegasi[]
In the Zephyr Heights castle dungeons, Zipp meets with the imprisoned Sunny and Izzy, intrigued by Sunny's earlier questions about magic. Zipp returns Sunny's journal to her and wants to ask about magic, but they are interrupted when Pipp suddenly appears, wanting to get more footage of Sunny and Izzy for social media. When Sunny asks Pipp why none of the Pegasi in the city are flying, Pipp nervously explains that only members of royalty are able to fly.
As Pipp leaves to prepare for her song debut, Zipp releases Sunny and Izzy from their dungeon cell to show them something. Meanwhile, Hitch makes it to the top of the mountain and arrives outside Zephyr Heights, seeing news coverage on the sides of buildings about Sunny and Izzy's recent arrest.
Zipp leads Sunny and Izzy to her secret hideout: an old, abandoned station through which Earth ponies and unicorns used to visit Zephyr Heights, which Sunny takes as irrefutable proof that the three pony races were once friends. Zipp reveals that not even the royal Pegasus family can fly and have only been pretending to fly using wires. She then shows Sunny and Izzy a stained glass window depicting Twilight Sparkle's cutie mark and a pair of crystals: the Pegasus Crystal, which Queen Haven keeps in her crown, and the Unicorn Crystal.
Sunny realizes that the two crystals fit together like puzzle pieces and theorizes that unicorns lost their magic and Pegasi lost their ability to fly when the crystals were separated, concluding that magic might be restored and the pony races will be friends again if the crystals are united. With the assumption that the Unicorn Crystal is in Izzy's hometown, Sunny, Izzy, and Zipp plot to steal the Pegasus Crystal from Queen Haven.
The Pegasus Crystal heist[]
At the royal celebration where Pipp is set to debut her new song, Zipp distracts the guards and paparazzi so Sunny and Izzy can sneak in. Once inside, they make their way to the area behind Queen Haven's throne. High above the throne room, Zipp confides in her mother that she is tired of lying to the public about their family's inability to fly, but Haven says that protecting the citizens and keeping them happy is worth the deception.
The celebration begins, and Pipp starts singing her song Glowin' Up. With everyone's eyes focused on Pipp, Sunny switches Queen Haven's crown with a fake made by Izzy. The two attempt to escape with the Pegasus Crystal, but their efforts are hampered by both Haven's pet pomeranian Cloudpuff, who snatches the crystal from them and leads them on a chase, as well as Hitch Trailblazer, who snuck into the celebration disguised as a Pegasus in order to apprehend Sunny.
In the resulting confusion, Sunny and Izzy stumble upon the technician pony working behind the scenes of Pipp's performance and accidentally tamper with the wires keeping her in the air. Pipp and her family are exposed as non-flying frauds, and during Sunny and her friends' escape, they drop the Pegasus Crystal. Pipp is denounced as a social pariah among the Zephyr Heights public, and Queen Haven is taken into police custody for the deception.
Sunny realizes she dropped the Pegasus Crystal, but Pipp appears with it in her possession and demands an explanation. Zipp explains that they need the crystal to bring back magic and fix everything, and with law enforcement looking for the two princesses, Pipp begrudgingly agrees to help and guides the ponies out of the city. Meanwhile, in Maretime Bay, Sprout, now calling himself the city's "emperor", has the workers at Canterlogic building a large machine for "offensive" purposes.
Journey to Bridlewood Forest[]
Sunny and her friends' journey to the home of the unicorns is fraught with tension and distrust: Pipp is bitter toward Zipp for causing their mother to get arrested, Hitch is determined to bring Sunny back home to face the consequences of her actions, and he accuses Izzy of stealing his sheriff badge. Regardless, Sunny remains determined to succeed in her quest to unite the pony races. When they come across a collapsed bridge, Izzy uses her horn to chop down a tree and make a new bridge.
That night, around a campfire, Izzy expresses how glad she is to have met her new friends and how sad she is that their adventure will soon come to an end. When asked why she came to Maretime Bay in the first place, Izzy says she was compelled to visit after finding a letter in a paper lantern inviting her there when she was a filly—the very same letter that Sunny wrote with her father when she was little. Izzy, Hitch, Pipp, and Zipp are moved by Sunny's sentiment that all ponies are meant to be friends and offer to do their part to make her dream a reality.
The next day, the ponies arrive at Izzy's forest home of Bridlewood, and Izzy eagerly welcomes them into her house. Deciding they need to disguise themselves in order to ask around about the Unicorn Crystal or risk causing a panic, Izzy gives her friends makeovers to help them look and act like unicorns—with a montage set to the song Fit Right In. In the middle of town, her friends discover that most unicorns look very depressed much of the time and are extremely superstitious toward words like "magic", "wing", and "feather".
The unicorns' "ultimate challenge"[]
At a local dining establishment called the Crystal Tea Room, the ponies' quest points them in the direction of Alphabittle, the establishment owner who plays betting games as a side business and never loses. Among the items he has won from other ponies is the Unicorn Crystal. Sunny challenges Alphabittle to a contest for the crystal, and she offers the Pegasus Crystal as a wager. Alphabittle accepts Sunny's challenge and chooses a Dance Dance Revolution-like game as the contest. Though the winner is decided on whoever wins three times, Alphabittle agrees to surrender the Unicorn Crystal if Sunny can beat him once.
Alphabittle easily wins the first two rounds, but with some advice from Pipp, Sunny beats him on the third round and wins the contest. During her excited celebrating, however, her fake unicorn horn falls off. Angered over being tricked on top of his bias toward other pony races, Alphabittle declares their contest invalid and demands the Pegasus Crystal. When Hitch speaks the unicorns' "forbidden words", they fall victim to their extreme superstitions; Sunny and her friends escape with both crystals while the unicorns are rendered unable to pursue.
As the ponies flee into the forest, they run into Queen Haven, who broke out of prison to find her daughters. The unicorns catch up with the ponies, and the royal Pegasus guards catch up with the runaway Haven, resulting in a tense confrontation between unicorns and Pegasi, with Sunny and her friends caught in the middle. Sunny breaks up the arguing and says they can bring magic back and make everything right again with the crystals they acquired. However, when Sunny and Izzy join the Pegasus and Unicorn Crystals together, nothing happens.
The unicorns and Pegasi start to walk away, believing their hopes were raised for no reason. Sunny tries desperately to make something happen, but to no avail. Feeling like her mission has ended in failure, she returns the crystals to their original owners and apologizes for the trouble she caused and for letting down her friends. She leaves to return to Maretime Bay in despair, and Hitch follows behind.
Three races, three crystals[]
Upon returning to her house, a despondent Sunny starts to pack away her Mane Six toys and childhood drawings. When she pushes some papers away from a panel in the middle of the lighthouse observatory room, she notices the panel has an indentation shaped like the united Pegasus and Unicorn Crystals. Her father's old light projector uses the light of the setting sun to project pony images on the surrounding walls.
When Sunny removes the light projector's prism and sets it onto the panel, the indentation clicks and sinks inward to create a wider opening, with enough room for two more crystals. Sunny's eyes widen with realization: there are not two crystals but three, and the Earth Pony Crystal has been in her possession all along!
Overjoyed, Sunny races to find her friends, but she notices the streets of Maretime Bay are mysteriously deserted. Before she can share her discovery with Hitch, they notice something going on at the Canterlogic building, with Earth ponies marching in lockstep and wearing anti-unicorn-mind-reading helmets. In front of the building, "Emperor" Sprout prepares to wage war on the other pony races with his "Sprouticus Maximus", a massive tank equipped with anti-unicorn and anti-Pegasus weaponry.
Emperor Sprout's declaration of war[]
Sunny and Hitch race to reach their friends before the Sprouticus Maximus does. They meet up with Izzy, Pipp, and Zipp, who happened to be making their way to Maretime Bay out of a desire to stay friends with Sunny and Hitch. Queen Haven, Alphabittle, and their fellow unicorns and Pegasi follow after to convince Izzy, Pipp, and Zipp to return home with them. Before Sunny and Hitch can warn them, Sprout's tank appears to endanger every unicorn and Pegasus present.
Sunny asks Haven and Alphabittle for their crystals back and beckons her friends toward the lighthouse while Hitch and Zipp try to slow the tank down. Sunny tries to join the Pegasus and Unicorn Crystals with the Earth Pony Crystal, but Sprout hampers their efforts by ramming his tank into the side of the lighthouse. As the lighthouse starts to break apart, Sunny, Izzy, and Pipp try desperately to join the three crystals together. In the middle of this chaos, Queen Haven saves Alphabittle from being run over by Sprout's tank, and Phyllis tries to stop her son's descent into madness.
As the tank rams into the side of the lighthouse a second time, Sunny succeeds in joining the three crystals together, but like before, nothing happens. The lighthouse comes crumbling down, and Sunny sees a photo of herself and her father on the ground, the picture frame broken into pieces. As ponies emerge from the rubble, Sunny realizes it is not the crystals that need to be brought together but the three pony races themselves. She explains that they can bring back everything they have lost, but it is up to ponies themselves to decide whether to choose division, fear, and hate or to choose friendship, trust, and love.
Rediscovering the magic of friendship[]
Queen Haven, Alphabittle, and Phyllis step forward and reassemble the broken picture frame. With this first step taken toward unity, the Earth Pony, Pegasus, and Unicorn Crystals start to glow and levitate off the ground. They swirl around Sunny and carry her up into the air, filling her with magic. A translucent horn and wings appear on Sunny's body, and when the three crystals join together, a burst of rainbow light spreads across the sky.
The light touches the horns and wings of every unicorn and Pegasus nearby, allowing the unicorns to use magic and the Pegasi to fly again. In Bridlewood, magic and joy return to the unicorns. In Zephyr Heights, the Pegasi happily soar through the air. In Maretime Bay, the unicorns and Pegasi amicably socialize with the Earth ponies and help them repair the damage Sprout caused. Sunny and her friends celebrate the accomplishment of their mission.
In a mid-credits scene, a trio of foals – one Earth pony, one unicorn, and one Pegasus – sing Glowin' Up together. As they run off to play, they leave glowing heart-shaped hoofprints in the grass.
