My Little Pony: Black, White & Blue is a special-edition Generation 5 comic released by IDW Publishing. In this comic, which takes place prior to My Little Pony: Make Your Mark Chapter 4, Misty, in an effort to impress Opaline, enacts a magic that causes all the colors in Equestria to disappear except for shades of blue.

Summary[]

The comic begins at Opaline's castle, where Opaline once again berates Misty for failing to capture Sparky Sparkeroni and for pestering her about the latter's desire for a cutie mark. She instructs Misty to use the "Golden Flute" in the castle cellar at her upcoming sleepover with the Mane 5 to try again at capturing Sparky. In the cellar, Misty finds a broken crystal ball that appears to speak to her and leads her through a false wall into a secret room. There, she discovers a crystal object called a "magic remover" and believes if she uses it to take the ponies' magic, Opaline will give her a cutie mark.

Some time later, the Mane 5, Misty, Seashell, Glory, Peach Fizz, Violette Rainbow, and Skye gather at the Crystal Brighthouse for a sleepover screening of an old black-and-white television series called Betwitched. After the screening and most of the party guests have fallen asleep, the ponies who are still awake engage in several sleepover pranks and games and invite Misty to join in the fun. Misty excuses herself for a moment to turn on the magic remover.

The next morning, the ponies wake up to discover that all the color in Maretime Bay has disappeared except for the color blue, such as the sky and Izzy Moonbow's mane. Misty immediately falls under suspicion due to having a mostly blue body (therefore being mostly unaffected by the phenomenon), but she denies any involvement. In addition, the ponies still have access to their magic. As the Mane 5 split up to figure out what is going on and keep the townsponies calm, Misty once again feels like she has failed in her mission to Opaline.

During breakfast with Izzy, Misty, and the other fillies, Violette is reminded of an episode of Betwitched they watched the night before and suggests entertaining the townsponies until the color comes back. When Misty quietly worries about messing things up (referring to her turning on the magic remover), Izzy overhears her and says it is okay to mess up, offering to introduce Misty to the wonders of "uni-cycling".

In the middle of town, Violette, Skye, and Pipp Petals cheer up the dour townsponies with games while Hitch Trailblazer and Zipp Storm investigate what caused the colors to disappear. Meanwhile, Misty confides in Izzy about how she has always struggled to fit in with other ponies, especially now that she is one of the few ponies in town who still have color. The two go to the beach, where ponies have already gathered to play in the still-blue water. When Sunny Starscout accidentally gets sand and seawater on the objects Izzy collected for uni-cycling, Misty is surprised by how quickly Izzy forgives Sunny over what was a mere accident. Realizing what she needs to do, Misty runs off.

As the ponies put on a fashion show with blue fashion items, Misty returns to the magic remover; after everything she has learned over the course of the comic, she attempts to turn the device off. Unfortunately, it does not deactivate. Out of desperation to not bring any more harm to her friends, Misty inadvertently shatters the magic remover to pieces, causing colors to return to Maretime Bay. The Mane 5 remain unaware of what caused the color to disappear in the first place, and Misty presents Izzy with the fragmented pieces of the magic remover for them to uni-cycle.

Quotes[]

Opaline: Cut that incessant cutie mark nagging out, Misty!
Misty: But, Opaline, I did what you asked of me.
Opaline: And yet you still haven't succeeded in capturing the dragon that would sustain my power.
Misty: It doesn't matter what I do, it's never enough. I'll never prove to Opaline that I'm worthy of a cutie mark.
Misty: If I took everypony's magic, Opaline would be so impressed she would have to give me a cutie mark! Oh, I hope they understand...
Pipp Petals: Can you believe these older shows have no singing? No wonder it was canceled.
Violette Rainbow: Let's give everypony a silly prankover!
Izzy Moonbow: Did somepony say silly prankovers?!
Misty: I'm sorry, everypony, but I just have to do this. I hope you'll forgive me.
Pipp Petals: The color is gone!
Zipp Storm: What do you know about the missing colors, Misty, and why are you the only pony not affected?
Misty: Wh-what are you talking about? I was here asleep like everypony else. I didn't do anything.
Zipp Storm: Plausible...
Misty: This has to be happening because I turned on the machine and I'm blue. Opaline is going to be so angry at me. She's right. I am a failure.
Misty: I always mess everything up.
Izzy Moonbow: I love mess! Never forget that somepony's mess can be another pony's treasure, and it can be fun, too!
Violette Rainbow: The lack of color will make you jump, jump!
Izzy Moonbow: Welcome to my treasure trove! Where everypony's mess is my treasure.
Misty: Ummm...it's garbage, Izzy.
Misty: I just want to make friends and have fun, like everypony else, Izzy.
Izzy Moonbow: So let's do it!
Misty: Do what?
Izzy Moonbow: Make friends and have fun, Misty! If that's what you want, why wait?
Peach Fizz: You're going down, Glory! That smoothie is mine!
Glory: Not if I have anything to say about it!
Misty: You aren't upset at Sunny? She knocked you and the boxes into the water and destroyed the lamp.
Izzy Moonbow: Mistakes happen, Misty. I could never stay upset at Sunny.
Sunny Starscout: We all deserve to shine bright, Misty.
Violette Rainbow: And if anypony treats you in a way that makes you feel sad, they don't deserve your friendship!
Pipp Petals: Let's give it up for Sweets and Toots, everypony! Who knew they were supermodels?
Toots: I did!
Misty: Stop! Hurting! My! Friends! Please!
Zipp Storm: Well, that was weird.
Misty: I'll take black-and-white movies over a blue Maretime Bay any day!
Skye: Too soon, Misty!
