My Little Pony: Case of the Missing Puff is a special-edition Generation 5 comic released by IDW Publishing. In this comic, a series of strange coincidences surrounds the mysterious disappearance of Zipp Storm and Pipp Petals' pet Cloudpuff, and everyone becomes a suspect, including social media influencer Chrysanthemum.

Summary[]

The comic begins with Pipp Petals watching a livestream hosted by social media influencer and "junk journalist" Chrysanthemum, who makes content based on recycling things that other ponies throw away. Pipp has been planning a New Year's Eve party, but her sister Zipp Storm has been more concerned about what appears to be signs of deliberate sabotage: an unknown individual has set off the party fireworks, ruined all the food, and destroyed the photo booths. Pipp believes these acts of "sabotage" to be mere accidents and tells Zipp not to ruin the party she has spent months planning.

As she investigates each site of suspected sabotage, Zipp discovers various out-of-place objects like patterned fabric, a flower wreath, and a horseshoe-shaped earring. She shares her findings with the royal family pet Cloudpuff, whose fur is covered in dirt and grime. Zipp realizes that the objects she found are the same objects Chrysanthemum featured in her livestream, leading Zipp to believe Chrysanthemum is the culprit. As ponies are having fun at Pipp's New Year's Eve party, Zipp races to confront Chrysanthemum, crashing violently into both her and Pipp just as the clock strikes midnight. Pipp admonishes Zipp for ruining her party and humiliating an apparently innocent Chrysanthemum.

The next morning, on New Year's Day, Zipp passes by her mother Queen Haven, who mentions that she cannot find Cloudpuff anywhere. Zipp finds Pipp, who is still bitter about her party being ruined, and announces that her New Year's resolution is to give up detective work, though Pipp thinks she is being dramatic. When Pipp finds one of Cloudpuff's wingfeathers on the floor, Zipp realizes it was Cloudpuff who "sabotaged" the party with his usual playful antics.

Zipp goes to Chrysanthemum's house to apologize for falsely accusing her. When Chrysanthemum answers the door, she is covered in dirt and paw prints, and the inside of her house is a complete mess. Zipp wants to ask about this but restrains herself to uphold her New Year's resolution. However, when she mentions Cloudpuff, Chrysanthemum suddenly gets very nervous. Desperate to change the subject, Chrysanthemum invites Zipp to go on a hike with her to make up for Zipp embarrassing her the previous night, and Zipp accepts the invitation.

As they hike together, Chrysanthemum mentions to Zipp her struggles of being an influencer: her follower count has remained the same for years, and she feels like the content she creates does not matter. Zipp tells Chrysanthemum that creating for herself is what is most important, not creating for others. When Chrysanthemum continues to bring up Cloudpuff and appears to be looking frantically for something, Zipp gets even more suspicious. Pipp even calls Zipp on the phone and reveals the castle is in a complete panic over Cloudpuff's apparent disappearance.

Backed into a corner, Chrysanthemum finally confesses that she was the one who took Cloudpuff. She attended Pipp's New Year's Eve party with the intention of taking Cloudpuff, returning him once everyone realized he was missing, being hailed as a hero, and finally getting more social media followers. Unfortunately, Chrysanthemum could not control the puppy's rambunctiousness, and he was gone by the next morning. She begs Zipp for her help in finding Cloudpuff again; Zipp, still holding to her promise of giving up detective work, offers to help Chrysanthemum and appoints her as the detective in this case.

From the state of Chrysanthemum's house, Zipp deduces Cloudpuff was trying to get outside in order to chase something. Elsewhere, Cloudpuff is indeed feverishly chasing after a squirrel. Following the puppy's shedded feathers and general destruction, Zipp and Chrysanthemum pursue him through Bridlewood, an animal spa, a dog park, a restaurant, and the Crystal Brighthouse, before finally catching him in the middle of Maretime Bay. Having failed to catch his squirrel rival, Cloudpuff finally collapses from exhaustion.

As they bring Cloudpuff back to Zephyr Heights, Chrysanthemum realizes this was the first time she did something for herself without any concern for her follower count. Likewise, she tells Zipp not to give up doing detective work if it makes her happy. Upon returning Cloudpuff to the palace, Pipp asks how he ended up all the way in Maretime Bay; Zipp explains he was chasing a squirrel while not divulging any details of Chrysanthemum's puppy-stealing plot. Zipp even mentions that Chrysanthemum helped her in the search. Pipp thanks Chrysanthemum for helping find Cloudpuff and offers to continue their discussion from the previous night, and Chrysanthemum eagerly accepts.

Later that night, Chrysanthemum gives Zipp her newest junk journaling kit as thanks for helping her realize the content she creates does indeed matter. Pipp joins Zipp just as Chrysanthemum leaves, and Zipp announces she is going to keep doing detective work. The comic ends with Pipp and Zipp setting off some fireworks together to properly ring in the New Year.

Quotes[]

Chrysanthemum: Hi--uh, hi there, everypony! It's me, I'm me. I mean. It's Chrysanthemum! I'm not gonna lie to you, I don't know why I introduced myself with my full name, nopony calls me that except my mom--
Pipp Petals: I'll have you know, Zephyrina Storm, that I've made it my New Year's resolution to be more like Chrys. So this is me! Being chill.
Zipp Storm: This is no acci--
Pipp Petals: Dontruinthisforme.
Chrysanthemum: Hello, Chrysanthemum, my name is Princess Pipp, and I made this for you. Happy New Year!
Zipp Storm: ...Hey.
Pipp Petals: Oh. Hi. I could barely hear you over all of this sabotage.
Zipp Storm: I figured out my resolution--I'm going to stop digging into other ponies' business. To accept that not everything is a mystery that needs solving. And no more detective-ing.
Pipp Petals: Zipp, that's a bit dramatic, don't you think?
Zipp Storm: I actually think Cloudpuff might've had something to do with--well, everything, and--
Chrysanthemum: Did you say Cloudpuff?! I mean, at a much more normal volume-- Whoa, Cloudpuff? Love that little pup. Would love to meet him one day. Because I've never actually met him. Small, white. Two little itty-bitty wings? I'm just guessing here. Context clues.
Chrysanthemum: It's kind of hard, though, when nopony engages with you. I've had the same subscriber count for years. It's like--does anything you're doing even matter?
Zipp Storm: Of course it matters. I mean, you're not creating for other ponies, are you?
Chrysanthemum: But who else is there?
Pipp Petals: Uh, yeah, so Cloudpuff's missing.
Chrysanthemum: Okay, it was me, I did it, I took Cloudpuff!
Chrysanthemum: When I woke up this morning he was gone, and also he chewed up my slippers, put a hole in the kitchen wall, turned over the trashcan-- He's a menace! An adorably fluffy menace!
Zipp Storm: Anything good in there?
Chrysanthemum: Of course! You know what I say--
Zipp Storm and Chrysanthemum: "One pony's junk is another pony's treasure."
Chrysanthemum: When we started out, I had the thought--Wow! This would make good content! But then I realized I didn't want to make content. I didn't care. I just wanted to find Cloudpuff. And I'm actually really excited to make something with all the things we found. I'm not even thinking about posting!
Pipp Petals: Chrys, thank you! I know we didn't get to talk much last night, but have I mentioned it's so good to meet you? Because it is so good to meet you.
Chrysanthemum: Oh! I have a New Year's resolution, by the way.
Zipp Storm: What is it?
Chrysanthemum: Don't chase squirrels.
Pipp Petals: Soooo...you still serious about that "no detective work" thing?
Zipp Storm: Okay, okay! You were right--I was being a little dramatic.
Zipp Storm: Happy New Year, sis.
