My Little Pony: Classics Reimagined – Valentine's Day Special, Romeo & Juliet is a special-edition comic released by IDW Publishing as part of the Classics Reimagined series. It is an adaptation of the 1597 William Shakespeare tragedy Romeo and Juliet, and it is the third in a series of adaptations of literary classics after Little Fillies and The Unicorn of Odd. In this comic, two party-planning businesses are bitter rivals, but Pinkie Pie of the Capulet company and Cheese Sandwich of the Montague company fall in love.
Summary[]
The story, narrated by Spike, is set in the city of Porona. Two party-planning businesses – Capulet's Catapults, Cupcakes, and Celebrations; and Montague Merriment Makers – have been in a long-standing feud over which is the superior company.
One evening, the Capulets throw a large masquerade ball. Cheese Sandwich, Capper, Starlight Glimmer, Trixie, Sunburst, and Ember of the Montague company sneak into the party in order to steal the Capulets' secrets, with the end goal of being hired by Princess Cadance to plan her daughter Flurry Heart's first birthday party. Meanwhile, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, and Twilight Sparkle of the Capulet company are hoping to be the ones Cadance hires.
As the party gets underway, Cheese Sandwich notices Pinkie Pie by the party games and becomes taken with her. The two strike up a conversation and find they have a lot in common, even though they are employees of opposing companies. They realize that if they pool their knowledge and company resources together, they could plan an amazing birthday for Princess Flurry Heart. As they say goodbye for the evening, Cheese realizes he has fallen in love.
The next day, the Capulets are furious when they learn the Montagues were at their party the previous night, and Rainbow Dash challenges them to a party duel. Meanwhile, Pinkie Pie and Cheese Sandwich meet in secret to discuss Flurry Heart's birthday party but are worried their intercompany feud could ruin it. They decide to put on a demonstration of their combined party-planning efforts to get their respective companies to stop fighting.
The Montagues and Capulets confront each other in the middle of the city. While passing through on his way to gather supplies, Cheese Sandwich tries to defuse tensions, but Rainbow Dash and Capper refuse to listen and fire upon each other with party cannons. When Princess Cadance arrives on the scene, the Montagues and Capulets cast blame on each other for the mess caused. Having had enough of the two companies' endless feuding, Cadance puts all of Porona on "party probation" and declares a ban on all parties.
Cheese informs Pinkie Pie of this development and fears their respective companies will never see eye-to-eye. They turn to Discord for advice, and he suggests if chaos caused this situation, they should "remove chaos from the equation". They invite both companies to their planned demonstration of Capulet/Montague party-planning collaboration.
The Montagues and Capulets attend Pinkie and Cheese's party demonstration, finding it to be a very dull affair with boring activities and bland party treats. Agreeing that this sort of party is terrible and recognizing the lengths to which Pinkie and Cheese have gone to unite the two companies, the Montagues and Capulets decide to put aside their differences long enough to plan Flurry Heart's party together. With the two companies finally making peace, Discord turns Pinkie and Cheese back to normal.
As the Montagues and Capulets put together Flurry Heart's party, Pinkie and Cheese are introduced to the original founders of their respective businesses. They had left their companies because of the ongoing feud so that they could marry, and they congratulate Pinkie and Cheese for finally bringing the companies together. The story ends with Pinkie Pie and Cheese Sandwich starting a happy life together.
Quotes[]
- Spike: Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Porona where we lay our scene, from ancient grudge break to new mutiny, where civil blood makes civil hands un-- --Wait, blood?! Who wrote this?!
- Cheese Sandwich: I got not-a-gouda feeling about this...
- Fluttershy: Maybe you're just nervous because this is the biggest party we've ever thrown, and if we mess it up, Princess Cadance--our guest of honor--won't hire us to plan Princess Flurry Heart's first birthday, and the Capulets will go down in history as the worst party planners in all of Porona?
- Pinkie Pie: This is going to be the best, most super-duper-est party Porona has ever seen, or my name isn't William Shakespeare!
- Twilight Sparkle: Your name isn't William Shakespeare.
- Cheese Sandwich: ...Who is that? It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night! Whatever that means!
- Pinkie Pie: Try not at all to be ashamed--it is a most bewilderin' game! See what I did there?*
- Editor's Note: *Please leave the rhyming to professionals.--ED
- Pinkie Pie: Obviously the best party food is-- --cupcakes!
- Cheese Sandwich: --cheese!
- Pinkie Pie: Ooh, so close.
- Cheese Sandwich: But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Pinkie Pie is the sun...
- Rainbow Dash: You're telling me those no good, something rotten Montagues showed up to our party last night?!
- Applejack: If you don't come down from there, sugar cube, I reckon yer gonna break somethin'.
- Rainbow Dash: I am perfectly calm!
- Discord: So, what'll it be? The poisons that make you appear to sleep eternally? The rubber knives? The buckets of red corn syrup.
- Spike: You are the worst. And you're definitely not helping us change the outcome of this story!
- Discord: I am once again suggesting poison!
- Pinkie Pie and Cheese Sandwich: No poison.
- Capper: En garde, Capulet!
- Rainbow Dash: I'm gonna kick your Montague behind!
- Princess Cadance: What is the meaning of this?!
- Twilight Sparkle: It's just that the Montagues tried to ruin--
- Starlight Glimmer: That the Capulets wanted to make sure we couldn't--
- Princess Cadance: Enough! This petty rivalry of yours has got to stop!
- Discord: Luckily I have just the thing. It's a tincture that causes sleeping death, and--
- Spike: No. Poison!
- Trixie: Do you bite your hoof at us, sir?
- Rarity: No, sir, but I do bite my hoof, sir!
- Fluttershy: Discord, how could you!
- Discord: What? Would you have preferred I followed the original story?
- Twilight Sparkle: This is maybe the worst thing I have ever seen.
- Starlight Glimmer: I can't believe I'm saying this, but...you're right.
- Discord: I fear our heroes will be boring forever, which is a fate that I think might actually be worse than poison--
- Fluttershy: Discord! Sometimes stories can just have happy endings, you know.
- Pinkie Pie: I just had the worst dream about having to do taxes--
- Cheese Sandwich: Why does my mouth taste like bran?
- Discord: Oh, now we're changing this, too, huh?!
- Spike: A happy peace this morning with it brings, the sun for joy will show his head. Go hence to have more talk of joyous things! (Though we hope to be pardoned for taking liberties.) For never was there happiness more come by, than this of Cheese Sandwich and his Pinkie Pie. Take that, William Shakespeare!
