My Little Pony: Generations #1 is the first issue of IDW Publishing's crossover comic miniseries My Little Pony: Generations. In the issue, the evil witch Hydia, who attempted to destroy pony-kind a long time ago, tasks her granddaughters Grackle and Dyre with finishing the job. At the same time, Starlight Glimmer and the Mane Six struggle when the School of Friendship becomes overloaded with more students than they can handle.

The issue begins at the Volcano of Gloom, where human teenagers Grackle and Dyre have been left in charge for a month by their grandmother Hydia and mothers Reeka and Draggle. One of the tasks given to them is getting revenge on the ponies who banished their family to the volcano ever since Hydia tried to destroy Ponyland with the Smooze long ago. Grackle and Dyre eagerly accept this task.
Meanwhile, at the School of Friendship in Equestria, headmare Starlight Glimmer, vice principal Sunburst, and the Mane Six are struggling to handle the sudden and massive influx of new students, which is causing them to become severely overworked and exhausted. They decide that they must hire some new teachers to handle the extra workload and meet the students' needs or else the school will have to disallow new students from enrolling. Starlight asks Rainbow Dash to write some letters to other schools across Equestria.
Grackle and Dyre enlist the help of their pet, a rat-like creature named Trench, to use his interdimensional tunneling ability to scout out other universes in search of the ponies. Trench locates Equestria, learns of the School of Friendship, and reports his findings to Grackle and Dyre. When Grackle and Dyre send Trench into Equestria to gather more information, Trench sneaks into the school and overhears Starlight and her friends' conversation about seeking out new teachers to hire, and he intercepts Rainbow Dash's letters when she mails them out.
Upon learning of the Mane Six's situation, Grackle and Dyre gather ingredients to create artificial ponies out of Smooze with the intent of infiltrating the School of Friendship and destroying it from the inside. Some time later, Starlight Glimmer gets a letter from "Hayvard Unicorniversity" answering her request for new teachers, though Rainbow Dash does not recall sending a letter to such an institution. The next day, Starlight, Sunburst, and the Mane Six, and even Princess Twilight Sparkle organize a party to welcome the new teachers: three sinister-looking unicorns.
