Summary[]
Hooray for Maretime Bay Day[]
The special begins with Zipp Storm flying to Zephyr Heights and sneaking into her former palace home to retrieve her sister Pipp Petals' lucky microhphone. On her way back to Maretime Bay, Zipp sees a pair of Pegasus foals crash into each other while flying, and she saves them from falling. She tells the foals that ponies are still getting accustomed to the magic of the Unity Crystals, which grants Pegasi flight and unicorns magic. Unbeknownst to Zipp, the Unity Crystals start glitching.
Meanwhile, Sunny Starscout and the rest of her friends are livestreaming a message to ponies across Equestria, in which Sunny recaps the events of My Little Pony: A New Generation and invites ponies from all over to Maretime Bay to celebrate the annual holiday of Maretime Bay Day. When a bird snatches Pipp's phone and flies off, the Mane 5 pursue it and end up outside the home of Posey Bloom, where Izzy Moonbow accidentally crashes into the garden due to her glitchy magic.
Posey, a proponent of anti-magic sentiment, believes magic should have never returned to Equestria, especially considering how unpredictable it can be, and resents both unicorns and Pegasi for having magic while Earth ponies do not. After fixing Posey's garden, the Mane 5 leave, and Sunny resolves to show Posey and others who share her negative opinion how wonderful magic is.
Glitchy magic and princess duties[]
The Mane 5 return to their shared home, the Crystal Brighthouse, and Izzy shares with Pipp Petals her plan to fix up Sunny's old lantern and give it to her as a surprise Maretime Bay Day present. Later, the ponies discuss the recent development of bringing magic back; Earth ponies like Hitch Trailblazer are jealous that they are the only pony race without magic, and Sunny mentions to Zipp that she still cannot fully control her Alicorn transformation.
Despite this, the ponies are determined to show Earth ponies that magic is a good thing, and they decide to use the upcoming Maretime Bay Day Festival to do so. Meanwhile, Zipp's mother Queen Haven calls and tells her to move back to Zephyr Heights so she can continue her grooming to become queen. When Zipp mentions the upcoming festival, Haven sees it as an opportunity for Zipp to learn festival planning.
Zipp is reluctant to leave her friends, but she confides in Sunny that she does not feel completely at home in Maretime Bay yet. Sunny asks Zipp to stay until the end of the festival before making her decision, and Zipp agrees. When Sunny leaves, Zipp notices a couple of Pegasi briefly struggling with their flying before they recover.
Detective Zipp is on the case![]
As Hitch reports to the sheriff's station to begin his daily policing duties, Zipp enters and asks him if he has seen any strange happenings around town lately, but Hitch says he has not. Afterward, he responds to a disturbance at the beach: an Earth pony accuses a unicorn of deliberately dropping her umbrella on the Earth pony's sand castle, but the unicorn insists it was an accident when her magic suddenly disappeared for a moment.
Zipp observes the commotion from a distance. As she leaves to investigate further, her own flying starts to glitch out, and she sees the Unity Crystals' beam of light over the Brighthouse distorting at the exact same time. She heads to the Brighthouse to examine the Crystals up-close, but nothing seems out of the ordinary. When her friends ask her what she is up to, she tells them she is working on her own Maretime Bay Day surprise so as not to worry them.
Back at the beach, Hitch gets overwhelmed when the argument between the Earth ponies and unicorns grows increasingly hostile, and he quickly excuses himself. On his way into town, Hitch discovers a large, strange-looking egg that washed up on the shore. He takes the egg with him back to the station and keeps it warm until he can determine where it came from. As he hides the egg, Posey enters to lodge a complaint against the unicorns for supposedly pranking her after an incident where her hooves got stuck to the ground.
The magical Crystal mystery[]
At the Brighthouse, Sunny and her friends are busy making Bay Day treats and writing a new Bay Day anthem. Meanwhile, Zipp spends hours watching the Unity Crystals for any bizarre behavior. Suddenly, she sees magic flowing into the Crystals from another location; unbeknownst to her, the magic is coming from her joyful friends downstairs. When the magic in the Crystals overflows, green vine-like symbols appear on the surrounding windows.
Zipp goes downstairs to tell her friends about this, but when they return to the observatory upstairs, the vine-like symbols are gone. Zipp tries to tell her friends that something is wrong with the Unity Crystals, but her friends have not noticed anything strange about their magic. She tries to convince Sunny, mentioning the incidents involving her Alicorn form, but Sunny believes the incidents are simply because she has not yet fully mastered her transformation.
Zipp's investigation into the magic glitches hits a dead end, which is complicated further when Queen Haven informs her that she will attending the Bay Day Festival. When Zipp sees Hitch acting sneakily around town, she follows him and discovers the egg he is secretly taking care of, and she agrees to keep his secret.
Keep the festival magic-free[]
Pipp assembles her friends at the Brighthouse and, having noticed how stressed everyone seems lately, suggests a relaxing spa day together at the Mane Melody beauty salon. When Zipp is unable to stop thinking about the Unity Crystals, Pipp and her coworkers Rocky Riff and Jazz Hooves try to get her mind off things by singing Everything is Gonna Be Okay. Unfortunately, this just upsets Zipp further, as she worries that magic might disappear forever and that her friends are not taking it as seriously as she is.
Just then, they hear a commotion outside the salon after a Pegasus named Windy loses control of her flying and crashes on top of some Earth ponies and unicorns. Posey Bloom takes advantage of the growing dissent to rouse even more anti-magic sentiment, declaring that magic should be prohibited from the Bay Day festival. As if in response to the building animosity, a thunderstorm starts to form in the sky.
Back at the Brighthouse, Zipp finally determines the cause of the magic glitches, which she demonstrates by starting an argument among her friends: when ponies treat each other with coldness and hatred, the Crystals weaken, and magic becomes unstable. Realizing Zipp was right all along, the Mane 5 resolve to restore the ponies' friendships and make the Bay Day Festival perfect.
Let's make our mark together[]
On the morning of Maretime Bay Day, Izzy presents Sunny with the restored lantern, and the festival soon gets underway. Ponies show up to have fun, and Queen Haven also arrives, but Posey Bloom and her entourage are present to condemn everything in sight and cause friction. Things become even more tense when Windy wins the sand castle-building contest, citing Pegasi's "unfair advantage", and Earth ponies denounce Pipp's new Bay Day song, wanting to hear the old song sung by an Earth pony.
The thunderstorm worsens and magic grows increasingly unstable, with Pegasi unable to fly, unicorns unable to use magic, and Earth ponies getting stuck to the ground by their hooves. Hitch races to save the egg he found. Despite the Mane 5's efforts to unite the pony races, the Unity Crystals fracture, and a slowly expanding black void appears to suck up everything, from which the Earth ponies are unable to run away. Posey and Windy get sucked into the void.
Sunny struggles to transform into an Alicorn, and her friends' support keeps their magic stable. Realizing this, Zipp rallies the Pegasi and unicorns to help the Earth ponies. With the lantern Izzy repaired, Sunny dives down into the void to save Posey and Windy, successfully turning into an Alicorn in the process. Upon saving Posey and Windy, Sunny escapes from the void as it closes.
Positive magic flows into the Unity Crystals to the point of overflowing again, and the vine-like symbols reappear, growing all over the Brighthouse and spreading to the town beyond. The Earth ponies discover they now have magic to make plants grow, and Hitch can now communicate with his animal friends. Zipp's friends apologize for not listening to her sooner, and she tells her mother she is not moving back to Zephyr Heights, instead choosing to stay in Maretime Bay as an investigator of magic.
Epilogue[]
The egg Hitch found on the beach suddenly hatches, and to everyone's surprise, a baby dragon emerges. Posey apologizes for the way she acted and asks for Pipp to perform her new Bay Day song; Pipp agrees on the condition that Posey sing with her. Some time later, Zipp's friends are thrilled that she has decided to stay in Maretime Bay, and the Mane 5 look forward to solving all the magic-related mysteries ahead of them together.
Meanwhile, a purple Alicorn cloaked in shadow observes Maretime Bay from afar, satisfied that magic has finally been stabilized and sinisterly deciding to "take back what is hers".
