My Little Pony: Skye's Secret is a special-edition Generation 5 comic released by IDW Publishing. In this comic, Skye goes on a summer adventure with her best friend Violette Rainbow while attempting to hide a big secret from her.
Summary[]
The story begins at Skye's residence during summer break; she prepares to accompany her best friend Violette Rainbow home to Bridlewood. Skye's mother Mariama is concerned about this due to a secret Skye is keeping from Violette. Worried that said secret could jeopardize her friendship with Violette, Skye assures her mother that she will tell Violette when the time is right. On their way out, Skye steps on a pebble, which appears to cause her considerable pain, but she attempts to play it off.
On their way to Bridlewood, Skye and Violette pass through Zephyr Heights while remembering they have a book report assignment to complete for their school teacher and Violette's mother Zambarau. They run into the Pippsqueaks Seashell, Glory, and Peach Fizz and express interest in seeing a local popular magic show, but when Skye appears to show sudden discomfort, Violette quickly moves the two of them along toward Bridlewood. Skye worries internally that she does not want to ruin this outing for Violette and lose her as a friend.
On the outskirts of Zephyr Heights, Skye and Violette spend some time having fun together, though Skye tries to hold herself back from getting carried away and having too much fun. As they enjoy themselves, a bandage wrapped around one of Skye's legs starts to unravel, revealing bruises underneath. Over time, Skye exhibits more signs of being tired and in pain; when Violette notices, she suggests they stop to take a break. Unable to keep her secret from Violette any longer, Skye decides to tell her the truth.
Skye explains that, several years earlier, she was out having fun with friends when she suddenly fell and sustained a bruise. She was subsequently diagnosed with Zebra Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (or Z.E.D.S.), a genetic disorder that causes her chronic pain and makes her skin bruise very easily. Despite the support of her parents, Skye's disorder stigmatized her in public, and her friends stopped hanging out with her. Ever since, Skye has worried that her disability would drive away the only friend she had left, so she kept it secret. Violette assures Skye that she will always be Skye's friend in spite of her disability.
Later, as Skye and Violette are hanging out at Izzy Moonbow's house, both Skye and Violette's parents arrive, and Izzy surprises everyone with a custom-made wheelchair she made for Skye so that she can have fun without her disability flaring up. Afterwards, Izzy and Zipp Storm fly everyone back to Zephyr Heights in the Mare Stream to enjoy the magic show and amusement park.
Some time later, near the end of their summer break, Skye and Violette finish up their book report assignment, which they have done in the form of a comic book. After giving their assignments to Zambarau, the two head out with the Pippsqueaks to go on one last adventure together before their summer vacation ends.
Quotes[]
- Mariama: Are you sure you want to keep that secret from Violette?
- Skye: I'm worried she won't be my friend anymore if I tell her.
- Mariama: Don't let the past cloud your future, my little pony. Your friend won't scamper. Believe in yourself, Skye. I'm certain you'll find the right answer.
- Violette Rainbow: Are you sure you're okay? That looked painful.
- Skye: I'm okay! Just horsin' around.
- Mariama: Filly, please.
- Skye: Zephyr Heights looks... exuberant!
- Violette Rainbow: Great word. Make sure to use that in our report. Mom would be impressed.
- Violette Rainbow: They! Have! A! Magic! Show!
- Skye: Vi? Ever wished you were a Pegasus? I would be the fastest zebra that ever existed. But that'll never happen.
- Violette Rainbow: Well, race me and find out.
- Skye: I don't wanna hear anything when you lose.
- Violette Rainbow: Me, lose? Never.
- Skye: Told you.
- Violette Rainbow: I'm never going to hear the end of this am I?
- Skye: Nope!
- Skye: This isn't how I wanted you to find out. But I can't hide it from you any longer.
- Violette Rainbow: You don't have to tell me anything unless you want to. I just wanna make sure that my friend is okay.
- Skye: Wait. You're still my friend?
- Violette Rainbow: Of course. Why wouldn't I be?
- Skye: "I can't control how other ponies think..."
- Mariama: ...But you can continue to be kind and love yourself.
- Mariama: We love you to the moon and back.
- Aloysius: And you'll always be our sweet little pony.
- Skye: I thought if you knew... I was going to lose you! So I hid my disability from you!
- Violette Rainbow: I'm so sorry you experienced that, Skye. You're my best friend, no matter what.
- Mariama: Get your hooves off Izzy's couch.
- Skye: Sorry, Izzy.
- Izzy Moonbow: Uhhh... I love jumping on my couches!
- Mariama: Don't encourage her.
- Mariama: I'm so proud of you, my precious Skye. I'm sorry for keeping you under my hooves for this long. Live up to your name and remember...
- Aloysius: ...Even the sky isn't the limit.
- Skye: Thank you for giving me the best day of my life!
- Violette Rainbow: Seeing you happy is the best feeling for me!
- Zambarau: Huh. Why comics?
- Skye: Why not? Pictures are superior, Mrs. Z.
- Jazen: She's got you there, hon.
