Summary[]
Happy Winter Wishday[]
The special begins in Maretime Bay during a snowy winter, with Earth ponies, Pegasi, and unicorns celebrating the holiday of Winter Wishday. At the Crystal Brighthouse, the Mane 5 are having a Wishday party, with Sunny Starscout sharing her plan to exchange gifts with her friends under the annual Wishing Star.
However, each of her friends has their own holiday obligations: Hitch Trailblazer plans to visit his grandmother Figgy, Izzy Moonbow has to attend the last night of the multi-day unicorn celebration of Wishiehoof in Bridlewood, and Pipp Petals and Zipp Storm are participating in a royal concert in Zephyr Heights for the Pegasus holiday of Wishentine. Despite the Mane 5's overlapping plans, Sunny believes they can celebrate each other's holiday plans and make it back to Maretime Bay in time to exchange gifts under the Wishing Star.
To accomplish this, especially during a snowfall that is atypical for Maretime Bay, Izzy and Zipp present the broken-down tram car Izzy found in the Make Your Mark episode Have You Seen This Dragon?, which they have since been repurposing into a method of flight travel. When the Mane 5 express how excited they are to celebrate the holidays together, Sunny's magic lantern reacts to their combined friendship magic and becomes a power source for the tram car, transforming it into a lavish flying car that Izzy names the "Mare Stream".
Wishday with Grandma Figgy[]
The next morning, the Mane 5 take off in the Mare Stream, with Zipp as pilot, and head for Hitch's Grandma Figgy's house. On the way there, they sing To Grandmare's House We Go. At the house, Grandma Figgy welcomes them, whereupon Hitch becomes very particular and picky over their Wishday treats and activities and wants everything to be exactly the same as past Wishdays. When Hitch asks about the unfamiliar trees in front of Figgy's house, Figgy says she grew them with her recently acquired Earth pony magic, remarking that she likes to change things up from time to time.
As Figgy shares stories and photos from Hitch's childhood with the Mane 5, she comments on how it has never snowed in Maretime Bay before this year, and she shares with them her favorite childhood storybook about the unicorn holiday of Wishiehoof. Zipp notices something peculiar about the book and borrows it from Figgy. After the ponies partake in building gingerbread houses, the ponies leave for their next destination – at Sunny's urging.
Frostyshivers from the unicorns[]
The Mane 5 fly to their next stop in Bridlewood where, according to Izzy, the recent snowfall and cold weather is also unheard of. In the middle of town, unicorns place homemade ornaments on the Wishiehoof Wishing Tree and exchange the traditional greeting of "frostyshivers". Izzy greets Alphabittle and loses her ornament to him in a friendly gaming wager, but she has a backup ornament. After Izzy places her ornament on the Wishing Tree, the unicorns hold a ceremony involving the lighting of crystals.
Once that is complete, Sunny rushes her friends to the Mare Stream so they can head to their final holiday destination in Zephyr Heights. On the way there, they encounter severe air turbulence; the increasingly intensifying snowstorm threatens to cause the Mare Stream to crash. With the ponies' combined magic focused through Sunny's lantern, the Mare Stream manages to land safely.
Joyous, joyous Wishentine[]
In Zephyr Heights, Pipp and Zipp go shopping around the city with their mother Queen Haven before they have to get ready for the royal concert that evening. Haven informs her daughters that she made alterations to the concert to make it last twice as long as originally planned, much to Pipp and Zipp's frustration. Meanwhile, Sunny, Izzy, and Hitch enjoy the perks of the VIP concert tickets that Pipp provided to them.
Later that evening, the concert begins, and Pipp and Zipp sing Joyous Wishentine. Their friends and the concert audience enjoy the show at first, but due to its doubled runtime, much of the audience is bored and sleepy by the end. As soon as the concert ends, Pipp and Zipp exchange speedy goodbyes with their mother so they and their friends can make it back to Maretime Bay for the Wishing Star.
Unfortunately, due to the now stormy blizzard, the Mare Stream has become completely buried under snow, and the Mane 5 are unable to locate it. Sunny worries she and her friends will miss the Wishing Star entirely, but her friends refuse to give up. When Izzy says "frostyshivers", the blizzard briefly gets stronger. Sunny's lantern reacts to Izzy's desire to see the Wishing Star with her friends and locates the Mare Stream.
Zipp finally figures out why it is snowing in locations that have never seen snow before and what is causing the blizzard. Using the storybook she borrowed from Grandma Figgy, Zipp realizes that, now that magic has returned to Equestria, unicorns are inadvertently casting an ancient magic spell and creating snowy weather every time they say "frostyshivers". Before returning to Maretime Bay, the ponies make another stop in Bridlewood to inform the unicorns of what they are unintentionally doing. The unicorns adopt a new holiday greeting of "warm Wishiehoof", causing the blizzard to stop and the weather to start getting warmer.
Friendship under the Wishing Star[]
The Mane 5 make it back to Maretime Bay just in time to see the Wishing Star streak across the night sky. Unfortunately, due to their activities in Bridlewood and Zephyr Heights running long, they have not had any time to buy each other Wishday presents. Sunny, however, says that does not matter as long as they have each other and get to experience the holiday together.
As the Mane 5 behold the Wishing Star's brilliance, the Unity Crystals react by shining their cutie marks in the sky. The special ends with the ponies playing board games and laughing together over a last-minute gift exchange.
