My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale (season 1)

An as-yet untitled My Little Pony CGI computer-animated feature-length film based on the My Little Pony franchise and the introduction to its Generation 5. Originally scheduled to be released theatrically on September 24, 2021,[2][3] it is currently slated for release sometime in 2021 on Netflix.[1]

Production

In February 2019, Hasbro announced the film during an investor event at the North American International Toy Fair and included it as part of their 2021 slate of film releases.[4]

Artist Lea Dabssi did freelance character design for the film from 2017[5] to September 25, 2020.[6]

Artist Amandine Aramini worked on the film as senior concept artist from March 2018 to July 2019.[7][8][9]

CG artist David Ronnes worked on the film as a set/environment modeler from March 2018 to November 2020.[10][11][12][13]

Artist Marylene Sun worked on the film as a story artist from July 2018 to February 2019,[14][15] including an opening scene song featuring the Mane Six.[16]

Storyboard artist Didier Ah Koon worked on the film as a storyboard artist and comedy developer from August 2018.[17][18]

Artist Katie Smith worked on the film as a storyboard artist from September 2019 to February 2020.[19]

Rachel Brennan worked on the film as an associate production manager and post-production supervisor from October 2019/2020.[20]

Artist Saloni Jain Agarwal worked on the film as a previsualization artist from February 2020.[21]

In January 2021, it was revealed that the film would "take place in the same world featured in Friendship is Magic and Pony Life, but jump ahead in time to focus on a new generation of ponies and unexplored corners of Equestria", that the film's main character is "an activist working to make the pony world a better place", and that "the introduction of new characters and a departure from designs featured in Friendship is Magic and Pony Life is intended to shift the brand's focus to more modern themes like diversity and inclusion."[22]

Synopsis

"In the new movie, the pony world of Equestria has lost its magic. Friendship and Harmony have been replaced by paranoia and mistrust, and Ponies now live separated by species. Sunny -- a feisty and idealistic young Earth Pony -- is convinced there’s still hope for this divided world, but her slightly misguided and often hilarious efforts to change hearts and minds have led to her being branded a misfit. When Sunny befriends a lost Unicorn named Izzy, who wanders innocently into the Earth Pony town of Maretime Bay, the town has had enough. Izzy and Sunny must embark on an epic adventure that will include a daring jewel heist, outrageous conspiracy theories, elaborate musical numbers, and the world’s cutest flying Pomeranian. Their adventures will take them to faraway lands and force them to challenge the status quo by facing their fears and making new friends out of old enemies. The world Sunny has dreamed of her entire life could finally become a reality as Sunny and her newfound friends fight to prove that even little ponies can make a big difference."[23]

Cast

Distribution

The film was originally scheduled to released in theaters on September 24, 2021, by Paramount Pictures.[2][3]

On February 12, 2021, the film was announced to be skipping its September 2021 theatrical release and instead releasing on Netflix due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.[1]

Merchandise

Toys and merchandise for the film are scheduled to launch from August 2021, including two August 24 Cinematic storybooks (8x8 Plus and I Can Read Level 2 I Can Read #1),[22] a September 2021 "MLP119" cotton bed set (depicting Sunny Starscout, Izzy Moonbow, and Pipp[dubious – discuss‍]),[24] and at least five Secret Rings (Pipp,[dubious – discuss‍] Zipp,[dubious – discuss‍] Izzy, Sunny, and hitch[dubious – discuss‍]).[25]
