Princess Twilight Sparkle - Part 1 is the first episode of the fourth season of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic and the sixty-sixth episode overall. It is the first half of a two-part episode whose events take place after the spin-off film My Little Pony Equestria Girls.[2][3][4]
Princess Celestia and Princess Luna mysteriously disappear right before the new Summer Sun Celebration. As Twilight Sparkle attempts to figure out what happened to them, a fast-growing plant from the Everfree Forest begins attacking Ponyville.
Production and development[]
The script for this episode was locked in August 2012.[5]
On July 20, 2013, an animatic clip of this episode was shown at San Diego Comic-Con International. In the clip, Princess Luna/Nightmare Moon and Princess Twilight Sparkle appear, and Princess Celestia is mentioned.[6][7] In early November 2013, the Hub Network released a preview of the episode's script on both Twitter[8] and Facebook.[9]
Meghan McCarthy considers the season four premiere to be the second and third parts in a three-part story beginning with Magical Mystery Cure.[10]
The ending shot of the My Little Pony theme song was replaced by a shot of Princess Twilight surrounded by the rest of the Mane Six, Spike, the Cutie Mark Crusaders, Zecora, Snips, Snails, Mr. and Mrs. Cake, Mayor Mare, Big McIntosh, Granny Smith, and Photo Finish with Princesses Celestia and Luna looking at the shot.
There was originally a scene showing how Pinkie Pie dealt with the strange weather patterns.[11] McCarthy stated that there was no room for songs in the Season 4 premiere, "but [there are] soooo many coming up soon."[12] She was then asked if Discord singing "Winter Wrap Up" counted as his singing debut and replied with a "Nope".[13]
Enterplay trading card series 3 card #27, as shown in an official image, erroneously lists Princess Twilight Sparkle,[sic] Part 1 as being the eleventh episode of the first season and as featuring the song You'll Play Your Part.[14]
The scene when the Mane Six accuse Discord of causing the Everfree Forest to attack and Fluttershy standing up for him reappears in Memnagerie. Twilight's first flying lesson reappears in Deep Tissue Memories.

Twilight tries to get used to her new wings.
In Canterlot, Rainbow Dash helps a struggling Twilight Sparkle practice flying with her new wings in preparation for the upcoming Summer Sun Celebration as Spike, Fluttershy, Applejack, Rarity, and Pinkie Pie cheer her on. Later on in the Canterlot castle throne room, Twilight expresses dismay at the prospect of spending the Celebration without her friends, whom Mayor Mare has called on to help prepare the festivities in Ponyville. Applejack tries to reassure her that they will always be united by the Elements of Harmony, though as she sees off her friends at the train station, Twilight reveals to Spike that she feels like something is missing.
That evening in their castle guest quarters, Spike tells Twilight that preparations are far enough ahead of schedule that they could make a quick visit to Ponyville, though Twilight worries that they may be needed on short notice and decides to stay in Canterlot. Princess Celestia enters the room and remarks how this is the first time that she has looked forward to the Celebration, explaining that it has only ever been a painful reminder that she had to banish her sister to the moon. Celestia reassures Twilight of her support and leaves the room, though as she walks down the castle corridor, a black vine breaks through the floor and attacks the princess.
"Whoa. That is weird."
Sometime later, Twilight wakes up to find both the sun and moon in the sky, creating the appearance of both day and night at the same time. As worried residents flock to her for answers, two royal guards pull her aside and report that both Princess Celestia and Princess Luna are missing. Twilight instructs the guards to continue searching for the princesses, though moments later, another guard appears and informs her that Ponyville is being invaded by the Everfree Forest.
Trouble in Ponyville[]
The Everfree Forest is invading!
Back in Ponyville, Fluttershy tries to reassure a crowd of frightened animals that have taken shelter in her cottage, only to become frightened herself when she finds a mass of black vines growing rapidly around her property. The Apple family try unsuccessfully to weed the vines encroaching on Sweet Apple Acres while Rainbow gets chased by a group of spikey clouds that attack her with lightning bolts. At the Carousel Boutique, Rarity and Sweetie Belle suddenly find themselves unable to control their unicorn magic and are eventually chased out by a magically animated curtain.
In Canterlot, Twilight decides to take the train back to Ponyville until Spike reminds her that she can simply fly there. After a bumpy ride, the pair arrive in Ponyville to find the rest of the Mane Six searching the Golden Oak Library for information about the encroaching vines. Twilight reveals that Princess Celestia and Princess Luna are missing and distributes the Elements of Harmony among her friends, explaining that she has a good idea of who is behind the strange occurrences.
The root of the problem[]
Oh, my! How embarrassing!
The Mane Six head outside and use the Elements of Harmony to summon Discord, though he proclaims innocence when they accuse him of taking the princesses and causing the Everfree Forest to invade. After Fluttershy persuades the girls that he might be telling the truth, Discord suggests they seek help from Zecora just as she appears in town with her belongings in tow, having been forced out of the forest by the vines. When the ponies ask what she thinks is happening, Zecora produces a potion she believes can help reveal the answer but which can only be activated with alicorn magic.
The Nightmare is born.
With some effort, Twilight casts dark magic on the potion and drinks it, whereupon she suddenly finds herself in a castle throne room. Princess Luna appears and angrily declares herself the sole princess in Equestria as she uses her magic to raise the moon in front of the sun. With the room now bathed in shadow, Twilight looks on in horror as Luna becomes enveloped in a sphere of darkness before emerging moments later as Nightmare Moon.

What if we lost the list on the way to Ponyville and then couldn't remember which things we'd done and which things we hadn't done, and then spent so much time trying to figure out what we hadn't done and what we had done, and we ruined the entire Celebration by not doing the one really important thing that we were supposed to do?!
- Spike: Uh... so that's a 'no', then?
- Twilight Sparkle: Spike, where were we?
- Spike: About to call it a night?
- Twilight Sparkle: We should probably go over the checklist one more time.
- Spike: I knew you were gonna say that...
- Spike: Sweet ground! Sweet, sweet, wonderful ground!
- Twilight Sparkle: Okay, I get it! I need to work on my flying!
- Twilight Sparkle: Half day, half night... strange weather patterns... out of control plants. I think I'm starting to get a pretty good idea of who we're up against.

- Fluttershy: Um, it's Fluttershy.
- Discord: Oh, right, whatever.
- Princess Luna: There can only be one princess in Equestria, and that princess... will be me!
