Secret of My Excess is the tenth episode of the second season of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic and the thirty-sixth episode overall. In this episode, Spike lets his dragon greed get the best of him, which eventually causes him to grow to a monstrous size. The title is a reference to the 1987 film The Secret of My Success.
Development[]
The episode was called "Giving Dangerously", then "Attack of the 50 Foot Dragon", before changing to its current title.[1]
Summary[]
The fire ruby[]
At the Golden Oak Library, Twilight Sparkle begins re-sorting the library books but gets distracted when she hears Spike giggling with excitement. He explains that the fire ruby he has been aging for months will ripen just in time for his upcoming birthday.
Oh, my little Spikey-Wikey! *smooches*
Moments later, Rarity enters the library to ask Twilight for a book on historical fashion, though she becomes enthralled upon seeing the fire ruby. Spike mentions his plan to eat it on his birthday, but when he sees Rarity's intense interest in the gem, he decides to give it to her instead. Rarity joyously accepts the gift and kisses Spike on the cheek before leaving the library. Reeling from the excitement of being kissed by his crush, Spike vows never to clean his cheek again.
Spike's birthday[]

The day of Spike's birthday arrives, and together he and Twilight set up decorations and refreshments in the library. Despite Spike's efforts to preserve the kiss mark on his cheek, Twilight manages to clean it just as the rest of the Mane Six arrive with presents. Rarity shows off a neck ring made with the fire ruby Spike gave her, declaring that his generosity inspired her to start working on fashionable new capes for everyone. Spike becomes excited with all the gifts and wishes that the party would last forever, though when Pinkie Pie tells him that the Cakes have a special surprise for him at Sugarcube Corner, he eagerly rushes out the door.
Spike arrives at Sugarcube Corner and receives a sapphire-studded cupcake from Mr. and Mrs. Cake. As he walks outside and reflects on all the gifts he's received that day, Spike accidentally bumps into Cheerilee, who gives him a fedora when she learns it's his birthday. Seeing a pattern, Spike starts soliciting birthday gifts from ponies around town before Twilight catches and reprimands him. He apologizes and promises to return the items, though as soon as Twilight leaves, he determines to continue grubbing for gifts.

The next morning, Twilight wakes up to find a larger, ganglier Spike sleeping under a pile of accumulated presents. She asks him what he did after they saw each other the day before, though a sudden interest in taking items around the room keeps distracting him. When his voice abruptly lowers, Twilight takes Spike to Dr. Horse and later Dr. Fauna but finds that neither are able to help. She eventually brings him to Zecora, who explains that Spike's dragon greed causes him to grow as he collects more items. As she advises Twilight to stop him from hoarding more, the two suddenly realize that Spike has run off with all of Zecora's belongings.

Returning to Ponyville, Twilight finds Spike trying to steal Scootaloo's scooter from the Cutie Mark Crusaders but manages to distract him with a nearby broom. Spike grows even larger and chases the broom to the library, where Twilight floats it into a room and shuts the door after he enters. Moments later, however, Spike breaks through the outer wall and continues searching around for items to hoard.
Twilight chases after Spike as he steals various objects from Sweet Apple Acres and Fluttershy's cottage. Applejack, Rainbow Dash, and Fluttershy join her as she heads to Sugarcube Corner, where they find Pinkie Pie trying to fend off Spike by throwing cakes at him. Just as he grabs another handful of goods, Spike experiences another sudden growth spurt, causing his head to crash through the ceiling. He walks over the ruined wall of the bakery and continues roaming the town with the ponies in pursuit.

Rarity tries on her new cape design at Carousel Boutique just as Spike, now a full-sized dragon, reaches through the window and grabs her. He begins rampaging across town and causing panic in the streets even as Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy try unsuccessfully to save Rarity. Three Wonderbolts appear and attempt to intervene, though Spike manages to trap them against a mountainside with a water tower.
As Spike roars in victory, Rarity scolds him for his behavior and takes off her cape to show how it tore during the rampage, revealing her fire ruby neck ring in the process. Spike sees the ruby and recalls the moment that he gave it to her, causing him to suddenly shrink back to his normal size in midair. Just as Rarity realizes who the rampaging dragon was all along, the two begin to plummet toward the ground.

While Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy fly to the rescue, Spike starts to confess his crush before Rarity stops him and smiles. The two Pegasi catch them and bring them safely to the ground, where Spike observes the destruction he wrought on the town. As he begins to tear up, Rarity tells him that she's proud of him for stopping the rampage before kissing him on the cheek. Spike proceeds to write a friendship report to Princess Celestia about how kindness and generosity lead to true friendship, and how it feels better to give to someone you care about than to simply receive stuff.
