My Little Pony: Set Your Sail #1 is the first issue of IDW Publishing's My Little Pony: Set Your Sail comic miniseries. In this issue, Pipp Petals is sent to the Sparkling Sea on a royal diplomatic mission, and Izzy Moonbow, who has become fascinated by seaponies, accompanies her.
Summary[]
The story begins with the Mane 6 enjoying a day at the beach; Izzy Moonbow, ever since first hearing about seaponies,[note 1] has become deeply fascinated with them, particularly the Galloping Ghost pirate ship and its crew of seapony pirates. Izzy explains to her friends that the first three volumes of the Galloping Ghost books portray the pirates as heroes who help seacreatures in need, but a fourth volume that she discovered washed up on the shore portrays them as destructive villains, leading her to believe it was written by a different author.
Later, Izzy continues to babble about the seaponies as she and Pipp Petals walk together on the Boardtrot. However, Pipp is more concerned with the impending debut of her new song "Set Your Sail". Meanwhile, Hitch Trailblazer and Zipp Storm discover Galloping Ghost book pages buried under the beach sand with the word "LIAR" smeared on them.
Pipp's mother Queen Haven summons her and her friends to Zephyr Heights; Queen Calla Lily of the seaponies has extended an invitation to the royal family after the appearance of the Boardtrot[note 2] established a means of communication between land and sea, and she specifically requests Pipp to be in the diplomatic party. Pipp mentions the release of her new song, but after some persuading from her mother, she decides to postpone the release. Izzy, ecstatic at the prospect of meeting seaponies, asks to accompany Pipp on her journey to the Sparkling Sea, and Misty uses a transformation spell she learned on Pipp and Izzy that turns them into seaponies when they go into the ocean. During their absence, Zipp analyzes the book pages she and Hitch found on the beach.
Below the ocean's surface, Pipp and Izzy board an undersea train bound for the Sparkling Sea called the Seapony Express and meet a group of eccentric, sinister-looking seaponies among its passengers and crew. Izzy mentions that some of the crew members look vaguely familiar. As Izzy continues to rant about the Galloping Ghost books, one of the other train passengers overhears and mentions that he knew the books' author Creeping Jenny.
One of the Seapony Express crew members takes Pipp on a tour of the train and creepily pressures her to show her social media followers all that the undersea world has to offer. Izzy finally realizes why the train's crew looks familiar: they are from the Galloping Ghost books. Before she can inquire about this, however, the train begins its final approach to Queen Calla Lily's kingdom. Just before the train passes through a tunnel, the crew ambushes Pipp and Izzy, stuffs them into burlap sacks, and takes them prisoner.
Quotes[]
- Izzy Moonbow: Like, you know, last week, when I made those fake caramel apples as tabletop decorations out of the onions we had lying around and you tried to eat one?
- Sunny Starscout: Urk. Izzy, please don't remind me.
- Sunny Starscout: You know those Galloping Ghost mysteries are just stories, right?
- Izzy Moonbow: Sunny, they're research! Well, I mean--I think they're research! Even if your dad totally kept them separate from the "scientifically accurate" books...*
- Editor's Note: *See the 40th Anniversary Special--ED.
- Sunny Starscout: Is that why you've been not so sneakily asking me and Misty to think really hard about spells that'll help you breathe underwater?
- Izzy Moonbow: Mayyyybe...
- Pipp Petals: Can we please take a minor beach break? I've got sand all in my mane and the seagulls are everywhere and I'm supposed to go live in ten minutes!
- Queen Haven: Darling, can you believe it? Actual seaponies! This is simply wonderful news! You must go meet them at once.
- Pipp Petals: Shouldn't Zipp go? I mean, she's the one who's gonna be queen someday!
- Pipp Petals: If I'm gonna be stuck doing some stupid royalty thing, at least having one of my absolute besties nearby'll make it more bearable.
- Izzy Moonbow: You know what they say--
- Misty: Magic is dangerous and should not, under any circumstances, be used recklessly?
- Izzy Moonbow: Practice makes perfect! Er, yeah, okay, we'll workshop it.
- Seapony Porter: You must be Princess Pipp Petals and Izzy Moonbow! We're the Seapony Express porters, here to help with that luggage.
- Izzy Moonbow: How did you know we would be here?
- Foamy Joe: We saw screamin' bubbles.
- Izzy Moonbow: That porter seems so familiar...
- Two-Eyed Gilbert: Did I hear you mention Creeping Jenny? Aye, one of the finest seapones I ever met.
- Izzy Moonbow: You know Creeping Jenny?!
- Two-Eyed Gilbert: I knew Creeping Jenny.
- Seapony Porter: [to Foamy Joe] Are you prepared? Before the tunnel, then. For the good of the crew.
- Pipp Petals: Is this a prank? This isn't funny!
- Two-Eyed Gilbert: Two came in the night, bringing the end... the end... the ennnnd!
