My Little Pony: Set Your Sail #2 is the second issue of IDW Publishing's My Little Pony: Set Your Sail comic miniseries. In this issue, Zipp Storm receives a suspicious message from her sister Pipp Petals and travels to the Sparkling Sea to investigate, where she meets Princess Anemone.
Summary[]
Pipp Petals and Izzy Moonbow, having been captured in the previous issue, find themselves as prisoners of Captain Starboard and her band of trench-dwelling seapony pirates, whose adventures Izzy read about in the Galloping Ghost books. Assuring Izzy and Pipp that she and her "trenchponies" will not harm them, Starboard explains that she and her crew need help on their quest for "revenge".
Back in Zephyr Heights, Zipp Storm is still examining the Galloping Ghost book pages she found on the beach with the word "LIAR" on them. Queen Haven enters and tells Zipp that Pipp sent a text stating she and Izzy arrived safely at the Sparkling Sea, but the text was sent from an unknown number.
Meanwhile, in the Sparkling Sea, Princess Anemone meets with her sister Queen Calla Lily to inform her that she found more copies of the fourth Galloping Ghost book, also stained with the word "LIAR". Calla Lily warns Anemone to be careful of the trenchponies when exploring that part of the ocean and reminds her that the trenchponies caused the Sparkling Sea's neighboring kingdoms to fall into ruin by stealing their "anchors", the sources of the kingdoms' magic.
Calla Lily is also concerned about the abduction of Princess Pipp and hopes to resolve it before her friends and family on the surface find out what happened, having sent the "unknown number" text to Queen Haven. Unfortunately, she fails to account for Zipp, whose investigative instincts have led her to investigate Pipp's apparent disappearance. Transforming into a seapony, Zipp goes to the train station where Pipp and Izzy boarded the Seapony Express. Several local seaponies attempt to stall Zipp's way forward, and even Anemone herself appears to assure Zipp that Pipp is safe.
As Princess Anemone gives Zipp a tour of the Sparkling Sea, Zipp is disturbed by the sand-rotted delicacies and mutated wildlife, but Anemone continues to pretend that everything is perfectly normal. When Queen Calla Lily appears and Zipp once again demands to know where Pipp is, Calla Lily finally caves and confesses why she asked Pipp to come to the Sparkling Sea in the first place. After most of the undersea kingdoms lost their magical anchors and fell into ruin, the seas started to become increasingly turbulent, and they now threaten to destroy not only the Sparkling Sea - the last undersea kingdom remaining - but also every kingdom on land. Calla Lily invited Pipp to the Sparkling Sea so that the kingdoms of land and sea could come together and prevent this catastrophe from happening.
Princess Anemone, however, has doubts and misgivings about the whole situation, but Calla Lily largely ignores her concerns in favor of what she feels is for the well-being of her kingdom. When Zipp notices this and offers to lend a supportive ear to Anemone's troubles, Anemone agrees to take Zipp to find Pipp.
Back in the deep trenches of the ocean, the trenchponies lead Pipp and Izzy to where they operate a pirate-radio station in their secret base. They explain that they need Pipp to use her influence as a princess and pop star in order to get the trenchponies' message out into the world. They warn that the Sparkling Sea is trying to wipe them out - and that, should they succeed, they will target the land kingdoms next.
Quotes[]
- Pipp Petals: Well, Izzy. When we got an invite from the sparkling seaponies to come visit their kingdom, did you think this was how our trip was going to go?
- Izzy Moonbow: Maybe this is just the seaponies' way of saying hello! You know, like sometimes Sparky says hello by accidentally setting soft surfaces on fire--
- Pipp Petals: When--when my followers hear about this--
- Captain Starboard: Trust me, princess. We want everypony to hear about this.
- Zipp Storm: Mom, I'm not really the influencer type...
- Queen Haven: And Pipp said she wasn't the princess type! Yet, somehow, I think you both manage to surprise yourself.
- Queen Calla Lily: "Long ago, the Seven Seas were full of wonder and hope, hope and wonder... But then those who lived in the deepest trenches, unhappy with their cold and lightless ocean, rode the currents out of the darkness. From the deck of their wicked ship, this darkness began to take that which was not rightfully theirs--the anchors of the Seven Seas, the source of each kingdom's magic. The Coral Crown from the Great Inland Sea. The Seadragon Scale from Seadragon Drift. The Moon Pearl from Luna Ocean. The Agate Geode from Celestia Ocean. The Sand Dollar from the Sea of Clouds. One by one, these anchors were taken. And one by one, the kingdoms fell, until only the Sparkling Sea, with its Starfish Seaglass, was left. But when they came from the depths for our anchor, we fought back. And though it was too late to save the other kingdoms... we remain as the guardians of the stolen anchors, until such time as we can find the last anchor, the seventh anchor, belonging to the trenchponies themselves--and reunite the Seven Seas."
- Princess Anemone: I want to find it. The last anchor, I mean. I want to restore the other kingdoms and reopen the pathways between us.
- Princess Anemone: So you lied to them? Princess Pipp isn't safe. We don't even know where she is!
- Queen Calla Lily: I didn't lie. I just...polished the truth a little. To avoid an international incident. Sometimes lying is the right thing to do, Anemone. If you were queen, you'd understand.
- Queen Calla Lily: --What do you mean another princess?!
- Zipp Storm: I got a weird message from my sister and I wanted to make sure she was okay. Maybe I overreacted a bit.
- Princess Anemone: Listen, your sister and your friend are gonna be fine. I promise. And when I promise something, I mean it.
- Bilge: Shiver me withers, 'tis the great Captain Starboard, tamer of the trench and master of this here ship.
- Izzy Moonbow: First introduced in the limited-edition Galloping Ghost holiday prequel, It's a Waterful Life, these are the trenchponies!
- Princess Anemone: Oh! You found our school of Pegacrabs.
- Zipp Storm: Are they supposed to look like that?
- Princess Anemone: Like what? They seem totally normal to me.
- Queen Calla Lily: Each kingdom has an anchor, a mystical touchstone that enhances our magic. They protect us from harm, amplify our personal magic, and keep our waters calm. Without them, I fear that the seas will grow more and more turbulent until... until the land above us begins to feel their wrath.
- Zipp Storm: Kind of like our Unity Crystals!
- Queen Calla Lily: Water is the most healing and the most destructive force in the world. If the unrest isn't settled... ...all the land kingdoms would be at risk for a total annihilation.
- Zipp Storm: I know we just met and I'm kinda a total stranger. But you can talk to me. Things seem strange here, and if there's anything I can do...
- Maris the Crow: You've got the attention of almost everypony on land and sea. You're a princess, a pop star. They trust you. All ponies need to know what's happening down here. we need somepony like you to get our message out before it's too late. The Sparkling Sea is out to get us. And if they succeed? You landlubbers are next.
