Mayor Sunny Skies is a male unicorn pony and supporting character in the hour-long special My Little Pony: Rainbow Roadtrip. He is the mayor of Hope Hollow and, later, Petunia Petals' fiancé.

In My Little Pony: Rainbow Roadtrip, Sunny Skies invites Rainbow Dash to be the guest of honor at the Hope Hollow Rainbow Festival, promising several activities for her and her friends. The morning after they arrive, the Mane Six meet the mayor as he oversees the repair of their hot air balloon, having volunteered the town's repairpony Torque Wrench to fix it. He gives the Mane Six a tour of the town's highlights and shows off the festival activities, which the Mane Six notice are underwhelming compared to how they were described in Rainbow's invitation. When pressed about this, Sunny admits to having exaggerated on the invitation and that there is no Rainbow Festival.

Sunny explains that when his grandfather was mayor of Hope Hollow, the town was full of color and its residents had a strong sense of community spirit. Sunny's grandfather established the annual Rainbow Festival to honor the town and invented the Rainbow Generator to create a rainbow aurora during the festival. When Sunny inherited the mayorship and Generator from his father, interest in the festival waned, and he made alterations to the Generator to amplify its aurora in an effort to increase interest. These alterations, however, caused the generator to overload and break down, causing the town to turn gray. Since then, Sunny has tried to get residents interested in the festival again, but he has been largely unsuccessful as the residents rarely communicate anymore, and he wrote to Rainbow Dash as a last resort. He convinces the Mane Six to stay and help before leaving them to work on a speech. Later, Twilight finds Sunny working on his speech in the town library's "Rainbow Room". When Petunia Petals enters the room, he becomes flustered and quickly leaves.

As the town's rainbow billboard is repaired, Sunny Skies spreads word around Hope Hollow that the Rainbow Festival is back on, contributing to the progressive restoration of the town's color. Twilight shares with him her plan to use the Rainbow Generator to restore the town's color, and Petunia Petals offers to help him with his speech, but he nervously declines and leaves again. Twilight and Petunia later explain to Sunny that the Generator breaking down had nothing to do with the town's loss of color, as the town was already being consumed by what Twilight identifies as "hopeless magic"—the townsponies started to drifted apart, and the Generator exploding was the last straw that made them lose hope in each other. Learning he was not at fault for the town's loss of color comes as a relief to Mayor Sunny.

As the Rainbow Festival begins, Sunny addresses the townsponies and thanks the Mane Six for helping return color and hope to the town. He turns on the repaired Generator, and the sight of the rainbow aurora fully restores the town's color. He then reveals that the speech he had been working on all day was a marriage proposal to Petunia, who happily accepts. Sunny celebrates the return of the town's color with the Mane Six and the rest of Hope Hollow during the song Living in Color, and he and Petunia bid farewell to the the Mane Six as they leave in their repaired hot air balloon.

Sunny Skies is generally optimistic and cheerful, and he often speaks in folksy expressions and idioms. He frequently offers praise to his constituents even after apathy and colorlessness have taken over Hope Hollow. He shows great pride in Hope Hollow and its traditions, especially the Rainbow Festival and his family's civil service to the town. Sunny takes his job as mayor very seriously, as evidenced by his various proactive efforts to promote community spirit and by his blaming himself for the town's loss of color. He often acts nervously around Petunia Petals and makes excuses to leave whenever in her presence to conceal his infatuation with her until the end of the special.
