The Failure Song is a song featured in the episode The Crystal Empire - Part 1. It features a duet between Twilight Sparkle and Spike. This is the first time Spike has been clearly heard singing in the series, though he accompanies a choir in The Heart Carol, and his past-generation counterparts respectively sang in the first and third generations of My Little Pony. The song was unveiled at the 2012 San Diego Comic Con on July 13, 2012, without the sound effects present in the episode. It is followed by The Success Song. Previous alternate titles of this song include "Failure Success Song",[2] likely a reference to both this song and its repeat, and "I Wasn't Prepared for This",[3] which was Daniel Ingram's preferred title, taken from Meghan McCarthy's lyrics. "The Failure Song" was also the working title.[4]

Lyrics

Twilight The Failure Song S3E1

Twilight's mane blowing in the wind.

[Twilight Sparkle]
I was prepared to do my best
Thought I could handle any test
For I can do so many tricks
But I wasn't prepared for this
Levitation would have been a breeze
Facts and figures I recite with ease
Twilight Sparkle: The square root of five hundred and forty-six is twenty-three point three six six six four two eight nine one zero nine.
Professor Bill Neigh: She is correct!
[Twilight Sparkle]
I could ace a quiz on friendship's bliss
But I wasn't prepared for this
Will I fail, or will I pass?
I can't be sure...
[Spike]
She can't be sure...
[Twilight Sparkle]
My mind is sharp, my skills intact
My heart is pure...
[Spike]
Her heart is pure...
[Twilight Sparkle]
Oh, I've taken my share of licks
I've made it through the thin and thick
But no I wasn't
[Spike]
Oh no, she wasn't
[Twilight Sparkle]
Oh no, I wasn't
[Spike]
Oh no, she wasn't
[Twilight Sparkle]
No I wasn't
[Twilight Sparkle and Spike]
Prepared... for this!
