The Isle of Scaly is the twenty-first episode of My Little Pony: Make Your Mark, the first episode of the series' Chapter 6, and the twenty-first episode overall.

In this episode, the Mane 6 visit the Isle of Scaly to ask the dragons to join their fight to stop Opaline, but the dragons are not sure they should trust them - until a familiar face changes their minds.

Summary

Back to the Dragon Lands

Using the map that Sunny Starscout and Zipp Storm found in Mane Smelody and Sparky Sparkeroni illuminated in Nightmare on Mane Street, the Mane 6 travel to the Isle of Scaly in the Mare Stream to warn the dragons about Opaline. Upon arriving to the island, Sunny's magic lantern powering the Mare Stream suddenly runs low on power, forcing the aircraft to make a crash landing. Unlike the ponies' previous visit to the Dragon Lands, they are greeted this time by several dragons, including Blaize, Fountain, Tumble, Luxxe, and Leaf.

When they tell the dragons about Opaline, the dragons explain that Opaline has already been to the island and captured two other dragons named Lava and Jade while they were still recovering from their magical hibernation. Blaize is suspicious of the ponies and suspects they are in league with Opaline, but upon seeing the dragon infant Sparky in their care, the dragons start to believe the ponies are not their enemies.

Blaize says they must get approval from their leader, the Dragon Lord, to ally with the ponies against Opaline. Izzy Moonbow, Pipp Petals, and Misty volunteer to stay behind to try and fix the Mare Stream, with Luxxe and Leaf staying to keep an eye on them, while the others go to see the Dragon Lord. Meanwhile, at Opaline's castle, Opaline uses the Dragon Stone to bring the captured Lava and Jade under her control while singing the song Villain. With their dragonfire, she empowers the Dragon Stone even more.

Sunny, Blaize, and the others head to the Dragon Lord's throne, and out from the shadows steps a familiar-looking dragon with purple and green scales. The leader of the dragons is revealed to be the former advisor of Princess Twilight Sparkle:

Return of an old friend

Sunny is extremely excited to meet the "legendary" Spike from the stories her father Argyle Starshine told her when she was little. When she and her friends inform Spike of the danger currently posed by the evil Opaline, he invites them into his lair to discuss things further. Spike explains that, during Twilight Sparkle's peaceful reign over Equestria, Opaline – having been banished from the Alicorn realm of Skyros – appeared one day with the desire to claim all magic for herself and rule over all ponykind.

In order to keep the magic out of Opaline's possession, the Unity Crystals were created to house all pony magic, and the Dragon Stone was created to house all dragon magic. The dragons were then sent into hiding to protect them from Opaline, and Twilight created a magic bubble around Equestria to keep Opaline out. However, Twilight's spell was weakened when magic returned, causing Opaline to make a resurgence.

Spike and the dragons fear that, in their current state, they do not stand a chance against Opaline's growing power. However, Sunny assures them that they can defeat her by standing together and holding on to hope. Realizing how much Sunny reminds him of Twilight, Spike agrees to team up with the ponies and defeat Opaline. As the dragons come to realize how special Sparky and his "transformation fire" are, Hitch Trailblazer wonders if Sparky should stay with them in the Dragon Lands. Spike, reminded of his time with Twilight and her friends, believes Hitch and Sparky belong together.

On a wing and a prayer

As Izzy and Misty attempt to get the Mare Stream up and running again, they realize – with Luxxe and Leaf's help – that Sunny's magic lantern is not malfunctioning but some external force is draining power away from it. When Sunny and the others return after forming an alliance with the dragons, Izzy confesses that they were unable to fix the Mare Stream. Fortunately, the dragons offer to fly the ponies to Equestria on their backs. Meanwhile, Opaline's power and collection of stolen cutie marks continue to grow.

Zipp Storm: Could you turn that down, Pipp? I can barely hear myself navigate.

Pipp Petals: [loudly] What?! I can't hear you over this "Intense Music for our Trip to the Dragon Lands" playlist I made!

Blaize: You are trespassing on the Isle of Scaly. Who are you?

Fountain: Um, signal? Uh, I don't know if we have that here. Also, what is a phone?

Pipp Petals: [gasps, screams, stutters] W-What did you just say to me?!

Misty: She attacked when you were half asleep? That sounds like Opaline.

Luxxe: A hatchling?!

Blaize: If you aren't dragon-nappers, then why do you have a baby dragon?!

Tumble: There hasn't been a baby dragon around here in a volcano's age!

Sunny Starscout: We want to stop all of Equestria from falling into a darkness so dark that we may lose the light of friendship forever!

Pipp Petals: That would be baaaaad. Like, super baaaaad.

Blaize: Ponies from Equestria, behold our exalted leader of dragons... Dragon Lord Spike!

Sunny Starscout: We are honored to meet such a legend as THE Spike! I-Is it okay if I call you Spike?

Spike: It would be weird if you called me Fred or something! Because that's not my name! [guffaws]

Spike: My memory is a little foggy after all these centuries of magical hibernation. What moon is this?

Hitch Trailblazer: I know how that is. I can't remember anything when I wake up. It's a miracle I can remember to put my badge on in the morning.

Blaize: You're not wearing a badge.

Hitch Trailblazer: Huh?

Zipp Storm: Twilight Sparkle! She protected our lands somehow, keeping her out all this time!

Spike: [gasps] Twi?!

Spike: You lost magic? All by yourselves? Aww, I'm going back to sleep!

Spike: You remind me a lot of somepony I once knew. Twilight.

Sunny Starscout: So you'll help us? You'll join our team to defeat Opaline for good?

Spike: I'm in.
