The Return of Harmony Part 2 is the second episode of the second season of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic and the twenty-eighth episode overall. It is the second half of a two-part episode.
After failing to locate the Elements of Harmony in the palace labyrinth, Twilight Sparkle redoubles her search but faces new difficulties from her friends, whose personalities have been altered by Discord.
Development[]
According to Lauren Faust, Applejack was originally scripted to climb to the top of the balloon to get to the basket to rope Rainbow Dash.[2]
Unlike in Boast Busters, Call of the Cutie, and Party of One, the Treehouse airing of this episode didn't mute the word "loser" when Fluttershy says it.
According to director Jayson Thiessen, one of the storyboard artists decided to board the award ceremony sequence at the end of the episode as a shot-for-shot equivalent of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, though parts of the sequence were ultimately cut to shorten the episode.[3]

Finding the Elements of Harmony[]
Discord: Don't mind me, I'm just enjoying the show.
While Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Fluttershy, and Rarity argue amongst themselves in the remains of the Canterlot Castle hedge maze, Twilight Sparkle accuses Discord of unfair play by removing the maze before they could retrieve the Elements of Harmony from it, though he retorts that he never actually said they were there. After Discord leaves to cause chaos elsewhere, Twilight revisits the riddle he left them earlier and determines to search for the Elements in Ponyville.

Twilight leads the rest of the Mane Six back to Ponyville only to find it already affected by bizarre phenomena as part of Discord's plan to turn the town into the "chaos capital of the world". The group at length make it inside the Golden Oak Library, though Twilight finds her friends increasingly unwilling to cooperate. When Spike retrieves a book on the Elements of Harmony, Fluttershy steals it and plays Keep Away with the other ponies to prevent Twilight from getting it. Managing to reclaim the book by force, Twilight opens it to find the pages hollowed out and the Elements of Harmony hidden inside.
Finding her friends indifferent to the discovery, Twilight manually distributes the Elements among them, assigning Spike the role of the absent Rainbow Dash. She coaxes the ponies outside with the promise of never speaking to each other again after Discord's defeat, though when she tries to activate the Elements against him, their magic ends up failing. As Discord claims victory over harmony and the ponies go their separate ways, Twilight becomes disillusioned herself and walks away in mourning.
Remembering the power of friendship[]
Friendship reports to the rescue
Seeing the town now overrun with chaos, Twilight decides to move away and heads back to the library to pack. She arrives in her room to find Spike holding his stomach next to a pile of scrolls and learns that Princess Celestia has been sending him all the friendship reports that Twilight had written since moving to Ponyville. As she reads through the lessons again, Twilight is reminded of the power of friendship and realizes Discord's plan to distract her friends from it. With renewed resolve, she sets out to restore her friends and the magic of their Elements.
Twilight performs a spell on Applejack.
Twilight finds Applejack at Sweet Apple Acres as she fabricates a story about confronting Discord. Pinning her to the ground, Twilight uses her magic to project memories of the friends' past adventures into Applejack's mind. The spell recalls Applejack to her true self, and she admits to telling lies in reaction to the vision she saw in the maze. With Applejack's help, Twilight locates and performs the same spell on Fluttershy, Rarity, and Pinkie Pie, restoring their normal personalities.
The friends eventually find Rainbow Dash lying on a cloud and ask for her loyalty to defeat Discord. She rejects their request and insists on remaining on her cloud, which she believes to be Cloudsdale. A short time later, Twilight and the other ponies attempt to sneak up on Rainbow in the Twinkling Balloon but fail, prompting Rainbow to fly off with her cloud. After some difficulty, the ponies manage to lasso her to the ground, allowing Twilight to perform her spell and return their friend to her regular self.
Defeating Discord[]

The power of friendship prevails once more!
Their natures restored, the friends confront Discord as he sits on a throne in the middle of Ponyville while various bizarre phenomena occur around him. He scoffs at their confidence and uses magic to levitate Twilight's friends toward him before Twilight intervenes with a protective spell. Landing together safely back on the ground, the ponies activate their Elements, generating a large rainbow arc that descends upon Discord and turns him back into stone. The arc forms into a sphere that expands across Ponyville, returning everything to its normal state.
In Canterlot, Princess Celestia holds a ceremony to honor Twilight and her friends for defeating Discord and unveil a new stained glass window in the palace depicting their victory.

- Applejack: The same way he got you to think that cheap rock was a bona fide diamond.
- Rarity: I thought we agreed never to speak of that again.
- Rarity: Oh, Fluttershy, would you be a dear and fly faster, please?
