My Little Pony: The Storm of Zephyr Heights #3 is the double-length third and final issue of IDW Publishing's My Little Pony: The Storm of Zephyr Heights comic miniseries. In this issue, as temporary queen Zipp Storm and her friends work together to quell the dangers of the encroaching city of Cloudsdale, they discover the source of the chaos and meet a legendary pony from the past in the process.

Summary[]

Zipp Storm, Pipp Petals, and Sunny Starscout make their way through Cloudsdale, around the vicious hedgehog-like arkan sonney, toward the old weather factory with the intent of shutting it down and stopping the storm that is ravaging Zephyr Heights. As Pipp pacifies the creatures with her singing and Sunny distracts them with her smoothies, Zipp heads to the weather factory.

Meanwhile, back in Zephyr Heights, the storm worsens to the point where the city's population can no longer stay in the royal palace. Hitch Trailblazer escorts the Pegasi to the old transit station, where Misty and Izzy Moonbow have successfully restored the airship to working condition.

Inside the Cloudsdale weather factory, Zipp discovers a bird-like creature that can channel electricity through its feathers has made a nest for itself and its chicks on top of the weather machine, and Zipp is unable to approach without getting hit by the bird's lightning. When Pipp calls Zipp's phone for an update, she sings everything she says in order to keep the arkan sonney docile. The lightning bird hears Pipp's singing through Zipp's phone and starts to fall asleep, allowing Zipp to carry its nest out of the factory without risking getting shocked.

However, one of the arkan sonney shoots its quills at Pipp, destroying her phone and severing the call with Zipp's phone. No longer able to hear Pipp singing, the lightning bird gets agitated again, but Zipp is able to keep it calm by singing Portrait Day. Once she moves the bird's nest away from the weather factory, Zipp flies back and shuts the machines down.

Unfortunately, by this point, the storm has strengthened to the point of self-sustaining and is now threatening the airship carrying Hitch, Misty, Izzy, and every Pegasus in Zephyr Heights. Once again feeling like a failure in her role as queen, Zipp pleads for a sign as to what she should do. Just then, she notices a poster on the side of a nearby building; the poster is the same one from the Zephyr Heights transit station depicting Pegasi in blue and yellow flight uniforms, and the building itself is the Wonderbolts Hall of Fame.

Inside the building, Zipp, Pipp, and Sunny find exhibits and memorabilia dedicated to the ancient organization called the "Wonderbolts". When Zipp expresses her desire to know who the Wonderbolts are, another information terminal activates, and a holographic image of the legendary Rainbow Dash appears. In this prerecorded message, Rainbow explains how the Wonderbolts were first formed - as well as her own rise through the organization's ranks and eventual opening of the Hall of Fame.

When Rainbow Dash mentions how the Wonderbolts maintained the weather in Equestria, Zipp asks for more information. Rainbow explains that all Pegasi, not just the Wonderbolts, can control the weather and details the proper technique for doing so. With this information, Zipp grabs a Wonderbolt uniform from one of the nearby exhibits and flies out into the storm. With her natural Pegasus magic, Zipp busts through storm clouds one-by-one, earning her cheers from the ponies on the airship.

Sunny and Pipp, also wearing Wonderbolt uniforms, soon join Zipp in her efforts to break up the storm. However, a rogue lightning bolt strikes the airship, causing it to plummet out of the sky. Sunny and Pipp are unable to stop the airship's descent on their own, and Zipp is too far away to catch up. In her desperation to fly faster, Zipp manages to break the sound barrier, creating a burst of rainbow colors. Supporting the airship's weight from underneath, Zipp softens its crash landing but stumbles harshly into the snow.

Some time later, Zipp awakens in a hospital bed. Her mother Queen Haven informs her that she has been unconscious for a week; during that time, Sunny and Pipp anchored Cloudsdale to the ground away from Zephyr Heights, Hitch, Izzy, and Misty have been making further repairs to the airship, and life in Zephyr Heights has more or less returned to normal.

Later, Zipp returns to the Wonderbolts Hall of Fame, learning more information about the Wonderbolts from Rainbow Dash's recordings. As Pipp joins her, Zipp plays Rainbow's final recording from the day the Unity Crystals were first created. In her recording, Rainbow expresses sorrow over magic being sealed away and what that means for her as a Pegasus and a Wonderbolt. She sends a message to the next generation of Pegasi to bring the Wonderbolts back, and Zipp decides to make Rainbow Dash's wish a reality.

Quotes[]

Pipp Petals: You know, they say that music soothes the savage beast. Well, you're in luck! Because you got the si-i-iiiingiest princess in all Equestria! I saw this in a nature documentary.
Zipp Storm: Hey, do you guys like jokes? Oh, that's okay. I can't think of any anyway.
Misty: I'm sorry, little sheriff friend. There is engineering going on over here, so... If you're gonna have a panic attack, can you just do it right over here?
Hitch Trailblazer: I'm gonna be frozen here. They're gonna have to chip me out of an iceberg.
Misty: It's pretty simple when you get right down to it. The chronoton manifold was overloading the flux capacitor, so I had to invert the polarity of the power coupling, allowing it to synchronize with the Wankel KKM cycle and-- You look lost...
Hitch Trailblazer: Um--will it fly?
Misty: Probably!
Hitch Trailblazer: Misty, I need more power!
Misty: I'm giving you all she's got, captain!
Sunny Starscout: Zipp, you gotta snap out of this! You can't take the blame for everything that happens.
Zipp Storm: I can and I will! A queen is supposed to know what to do!
Pipp Petals: What's a Wonderbolt?
Zipp Storm: All I want to know is who the Wonderbolts are!
Rainbow Dash: That's a very cool question, but I'll bet you the answer is at least... tweny[sic] percent cooler!
Zipp Storm: That projection-- That's Rainbow Dash!
Zipp Storm: Come on, Zephyrina, this is it. Be a Wonderbolt. Save the day. Concentrate your Pegasus magic... and push right through!
Hitch Trailblazer, Izzy Moonbow, and Misty: Queen Zipp! Queen Zipp! Queen Zipp!
Zipp Storm: They're cheering for me! I can't let them down!
Pipp Petals: Cadet Pipp Petals reporting for duty.
Sunny Starscout: Cadet Sunny Starscout reporting for duty.
Zipp Storm: I love you guys.
Queen Haven: Get me more pillows! I want her to have the finest pillows in the kingdom! I don't care if she has 25 pillows already, my baby deserves more!
Queen Haven: You literally put this whole kingdom on your back, my dear. That wasn't very safe.
Zipp Storm: I just did what I knew you would do, Mom. Just, you know, faster.
Pipp Petals: You flew so fast you made some kind of a boom and a rainbow appeared.
Zipp Storm: I kinda remember that. According to Rainbow Dash here, that's called a sonic rainboom.
Future Rainbow Dash: I'm recording this message for the next Pegasi who can fly. The next Pegasi who find this city. This museum. It's your turn now. Bring back the Wonderbolts. You don't have to call them that, but what we did was important. The world needs us. Whoever you are, it's your turn to be awesome, okay?
Zipp Storm: Okay. I think I can handle that.
