The Unicorn of Odd #2

My Little Pony: Classics Reimagined – The Unicorn of Odd #1 is the first issue of IDW Publishing's My Little Pony: Classics Reimagined - The Unicorn of Odd comic miniseries, adapting the 1900 L. Frank Baum novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In this issue, Applejack appears as Dorothy, who is whisked away from her ordinary farm life to a magical land of Breezies, silver horseshoes, and good and evil princesses.

Summary[]

On a small farm in Ponyville, Kansas, Dorothy Gale (portrayed by Applejack) lives with her uncle Henry (portrayed by Big McIntosh), grandmother Granny Em (portrayed by Granny Smith), and dog Toto (portrayed by Winona). One day, a cyclone blows through the area and toward Dorothy's home. As Henry goes to round up the cattle, Granny Em ushers Dorothy toward the storm cellar, but Dorothy is unable to pull Toto out from under a bed he hides under. Before they can join Granny Em in the cellar, the cyclone pulls the entire house from its foundation and carries it up into the sky, with Dorothy and Toto still inside.

Hours later, when the house finally lands back on the ground, Dorothy and Toto find themselves in a magical land called Odd and are greeted by Breezies. They inform Dorothy that her house landed on and crushed the Wicked Princess of the East (portrayed by Nightmare Moon), and they thank Dorothy for freeing them of the Wicked Princess's evil. The Good Princess of the North (portrayed by Princess Celestia) appears and gifts Dorothy with the Wicked Princess of the East's magic silver horseshoes.

Concerned about her grandmother and uncle, Dorothy asks how to get back to Kansas; the Good Princess of the North suggests following the yellow brick road to the distant Emerald City and seeking out the all-powerful "Unicorn of Odd". As the Breezies accompany Dorothy to the edge of Breezieland, the Good Princess of the North lifts Dorothy's house off the Wicked Princess of the East (now portrayed by Princess Luna), who is still alive.

After several days of traveling with the Breezies, Dorothy bids them farewell and continues down the yellow brick road with Toto, eventually resting near a cornfield. There, they encounter a living, talking scarecrow (portrayed by Pinkie Pie) who laments her ironic inability to scare crows away. After they introduce themselves, Dorothy explains that she is off to see the Unicorn of Odd in the Emerald City; the Scarecrow wishes to come along so that she can ask the Unicorn for a brain – with which to plan parties – and Dorothy agrees.

Quotes[]

Rarity: I'm playing Big Mac's wife? It's finally time for the makeover I've been dreaming of for years! Come here, hubby! We're going to make you into a prize deserving to be married to moi!
Big McIntosh: Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope!
Applejack: If we're makin' changes here, get me out of this silly dress!
Narrator: But, Applejack... Dorothy wears a dress.
Applejack: Not this Dorothy! You gotta put me in something-- let's see some overalls.
Narrator: But--
Applejack: Overalls or I walk!
Applejack: Gosh, Toto. I don't think we're in Ponyville anymore.
Princess Celestia: I am the Good Princess of the North.
Applejack: Wait, you're a princess? Didn't you say she was a princess? Are we just swapping "Princess" for "Witch" here?
Applejack: Oh, lucky me. It looks like they shrunk to my size. Now I have clunky silver horseshoes. Yay?
Breezie 1: Weeeeee're...
Applejack: I'd really appreciate it if ya didn't sing, though.
Breezie 1: Don't worry about that. Only the book's in the public domain.
Breezie 2: We don't have the rights to any of the songs.
Princess Luna: Why are we having this conversation on-panel anyway?
Princess Celestia: Oh, we can't actually smush anypony permanently in the comic, so we had to show you were actually okay.
Princess Luna: Got it.
Pinkie Pie: Hiya, new friends!
Applejack: Sorry, did you just talk?
Pinkie Pie: Abso-tootly! How do you do?
Narrator: That is not how Dorothy does it in the original story! We're getting off script here!
Applejack: Listen, you want somepony who can lift a scarecrow off a pole all nice, you shoulda cast Twilight as Dorothy. But you chose Applejack, and Applejack bucks like a rodeo pony.
Pinkie Pie: All-powerful, huh? Do you think he can give me a brain? See, I just got a bunch of straw up here, so I'm happy all the time, but what I really wanna do is plan parties. And you can't do that without a brain!
Pinkie Pie: Weeeeeee're off to--
Applejack: Pinkie, we don't have the rights to the song, just the book.
Pinkie Pie: Oh, sorry.
