My Little Pony: Classics Reimagined – The Unicorn of Odd #2 is the second issue of IDW Publishing's My Little Pony: Classics Reimagined - The Unicorn of Odd comic miniseries, adapting the 1900 L. Frank Baum novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In this issue, Dorothy continues down the yellow brick road with the Scarecrow, and their journey takes them through a shadowy forest, where they meet the Tin Woodsmare and the Cowardly Lion.
Summary[]
Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and Toto continue down the yellow brick road until they enter a dark forest, where the road becomes uneven and difficult to navigate in the dark. The three take shelter for the evening in an abandoned cabin, and the next morning, they encounter the Tin Woodsmare (portrayed by Rarity), a woodsmare whose body is made of metal.
After a brief fourth-wall-breaking argument with the narrator, the Tin Woodsmare asks Dorothy and company for help because her joints have become rusted and she cannot move. Dorothy uses an oil can on the Woodsmare's joints, allowing her to move again. Dorothy explains that she and her friends are going to see the Unicorn of Odd so that he can send Dorothy and Toto back home to Kansas and give the Scarecrow a brain; the Woodsmare wishes to accompany them so that she can ask the Unicorn for a heart – with which to fall in love.
As the group continues down the road, the Tin Woodsmare explains how she came to have a metal body. Years ago, she fell in love with fashion and gave up her life as a woodsmare to pursue a fashion career. However, a jealous fashion designer (portrayed by Suri Polomare) refused to sell the Woodsmare's dresses in her boutique, so the Woodsmare used her woodcutting training to build her own boutique.
Out of pettiness, the jealous fashion designer asked the Wicked Princess of the East to put a curse on the Woodsmare. The Wicked Princess cursed the Woodsmare's axe, causing it to come alive and chop off her leg. She had her leg replaced with a metal substitute, but over time, she lost more body parts to the Wicked Princess's curse until her entire body was metal. Because of this, the Woodsmare lost her heart and, subsequently, her love for fashion.
Near the edge of the forest, the group encounters a vicious lion (portrayed by Fluttershy) that proceeds to attack and roar at them. Before the lion can harm Toto, Dorothy angrily tells her off; it turns out that the lion is quite cowardly and uses her roars and growls to scare others away. Upon learning of Dorothy and her friends' quest to see the Unicorn of Odd, the Cowardly Lion asks to join them so that she can ask the Unicorn for some courage.
Later on in their journey, the group crosses a pair of large chasms in the yellow brick road. In order to cross the second chasm, the Scarecrow comes up with the idea of chopping down a tall tree and using it as a bridge (despite not possessing a brain), and the Tin Woodsmare cries over the act of cutting down such a beautiful tree (despite not possessing a heart). Before the group can cross their makeshift bridge, however, they are suddenly cornered by two Kalidahs (portrayed by Diamond Dogs), beasts with bodies like bears and heads like tigers.
Quotes[]
- Narrator: Dorothy learned something important: not having a brain does not keep a pony from talking.
- Pinkie Pie: You should meet my sister, Maude! She loves things that are boring and gray!
- Applejack: Wait, scarecrows have sisters?
- Pinkie Pie: Oh yeah! You can paint a face on anything to try to scare off crows.
- Applejack: Wait, so what is Maude?
- Pinkie Pie: She's a rock!
- Narrator: The Scarecrow did not need to eat.
- Pinkie Pie: It makes my insides all gross and mushy!
- Rarity: You have all the extravagance of language available to you. Every adjective and adverb, and "sparkling metal pony" is the best you can do?
- Narrator: I suppose you think you can do better?
- Rarity: Darling, don't take this the wrong way, but you're hardly A.K. Yearling. A Diamond Dog with a thesaurus could do better.
- Rarity: He has a whole Emerald City? Tell me, is this unicorn single?
- Rarity: If this unicorn is so powerful, do you think he could give me a heart?
- Applejack: You ain't got a heart in there?!
- Pinkie Pie: What's so great about a heart?
- Rarity: What's so great? A heart allows you to fall in love!
- Pinkie Pie: You got all four legs and your head cut off by a magic axe? This comic book is about to be extreme!
- Narrator: The editor said we couldn't illustrate that part.
- Applejack: To threaten this poor little dog! Only a coward would do that.
- Fluttershy: I...I...I... I am a coward!
- Pinkie Pie: I'm asking the Unicorn of Odd to give me a brain!
- Rarity: And me a heart!
- Applejack: And to get me and Toto back to Kansas.
- Fluttershy: Do you think, if I came along, he might give me some courage?
- Fluttershy: Guys! We're about to eaten by Kalidahs!
