My Little Pony: Classics Reimagined – The Unicorn of Odd #3 is the third issue of IDW Publishing's My Little Pony: Classics Reimagined - The Unicorn of Odd comic miniseries, adapting the 1900 L. Frank Baum novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In this issue, Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodsmare, and the Cowardly Lion continue following the yellow brick road to the Emerald City, and they run afoul of the Wicked Princess of the West.

Summary[]

After the Cowardly Lion fails to scare the Kalidahs away with her roar, Dorothy and her friends cross the chasm using the tree that the Tin Woodsmare cut down in the previous issue, and the Woodsmare convinces the Kalidahs to stop chasing them by threatening to chop the tree in half as they attempt to cross. Once they are out of the forest, the group tries to cross a river that cuts through the yellow brick road but end up drifting too far downriver.

As they make their way back to the main road, they cut through a field of poppies that cause Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, and Toto to fall asleep. The unaffected Scarecrow and Woodsmare are unable to carry all three of them, but when the Woodsmare rescues a field mouse from being eaten by a wild cat (portrayed by Opalescence), the field mouse - revealed to be the Queen of Field Mice - offers her and her subjects' assistance in carrying the Cowardly Lion out of the poppy field.

Further down the yellow brick road, Dorothy and her friends find and take shelter in a village of griffons. As they explain their quest to see the Unicorn of Odd in the Emerald City, the griffons share rumors that the Unicorn is very reclusive and that no one even knows what he looks like.

The next morning, Dorothy and her friends arrive to the Emerald City, where they are given protective eyewear to shield their eyes from the sunlight reflecting off the green gems that comprise the entire city. At the castle, the Unicorn of Odd agrees to see Dorothy and the others but only one at a time. He takes a different form in each of their presences; to Dorothy, he takes the form of a regal-looking unicorn stallion. The Unicorn of Odd agrees to fulfill each of their wishes but only if they destroy the Wicked Princess of the West first.

The group departs from the Emerald City and travels west through a hot desert. The Wicked Princess of the West sends waves of her minions to stop them, including timberwolves, birds, and changelings, but Dorothy and her friends make their way past each obstacle. Their final obstacle is the Wicked Princess's winged monkeys (portrayed by Rainbow Dash and the Wonderbolts); the monkeys scatter the Scarecrow and Tin Woodsmare to the far reaches of the desert and capture Dorothy and the Cowardly Lion.

Dorothy is brought before the Wicked Princess of the West herself (portrayed by Queen Chrysalis). Although the Wicked Princess is unable to destroy Dorothy because she has the protection of the Good Princess of the North, she notices and covets the Wicked Princess of the East's silver horseshoes that Dorothy is wearing. She decides to make Dorothy her servant. Dorothy offers to give the horseshoes to the Wicked Princess in exchange for her and the Cowardly Lion's freedom, but she is unable to remove them. In her attempt to remove the horseshoes, Dorothy accidentally kicks a bucket of water onto the Wicked Princess's head, causing her to melt into a puddle of sludge.

Quotes[]

Rarity: If you turn around right now, I'll wait until you get back to the other side to cut the end off of this tree. Of course, if you want to fall to the rocks below, do keep coming.
Diamond Dog: No, ma'am. Sorry, ma'am. We'll go back to the other side.
Rarity: See that you do.
Rarity: Scarecrow, darling, lift with your knees.
Pinkie Pie: Ooh, fun fact: I don't have those!
Griffon 1: Some say he's an eight-foot-tall unicorn. Others say he's just a unicorn head. Some say he don't even look like a unicorn at all.
Pinkie Pie: You mean he looks like a bugbear? Or a giant octopus? Or a walking, talking banana?
Griffon 2: Well--
Pinkie Pie: Or a birthday cake? Or a tiny alligator? Or a rainbow hippogriff? Or an accordion?
Unicorn of Odd: I am Odd the Great and Powerful.
Unicorn of Odd: If you smushed the Wicked Princess of the East, that means there's only one Wicked Princess left. Tell you what, you take her out, I'll send you home.
Fluttershy: I don't wanna squish anyone. Do we even have any more houses? I can maybe hold it up if you guys slide her under.
Rainbow Dash: Hang on! Time out! Is this really the only part you could find for me? I'm like... awesome.
Narrator: Listen, you wanted a part where you got to be tough and you got to fly.
Rainbow Dash: Why can't we adapt action movies? I'd make a great Buck Norris!
Narrator: The Cowardly Lion was spared, for the Wicked Princess of the West planned to break her and make her a steed.
Fluttershy: I find that very offensive both as a pony and as a lion.
Queen Chrysalis: You will be my servant. You'll clean my castle, cook my meals, and wait on me hoof and...hoof.
Queen Chrysalis: I'm melting! I'm melting! Goodbye, cruel world! Mark my words, someday they'll make a musical where I'm the hero.
Applejack: Yeah, not likely.
Applejack: This is only issue three! What the hay is the next issue about?
Narrator: They'll have to join us next time to find out!
