My Little Pony: Classics Reimagined – The Unicorn of Odd #4 is the fourth and final issue of IDW Publishing's My Little Pony: Classics Reimagined - The Unicorn of Odd comic miniseries, adapting the 1900 L. Frank Baum novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In this issue, Dorothy and her friends finally meet the mysterious and reclusive Unicorn of Odd after defeating the Wicked Princess of the West.
Summary[]
Having inadvertently destroyed the Wicked Princess of the West in the previous issue, Dorothy is hailed by the changelings as a hero. They free the imprisoned Cowardly Lion, retrieve the Scarecrow and Tin Woodsmare from the desert, and throw them all a lavish parade and feast and shower them with gifts.
The next day, the Flying Monkeys transport Dorothy and her friends back to the Emerald City to inform the Unicorn of Odd that they completed the mission he gave them. However, the Unicorn initially ignores Dorothy and her friends' request to see him, and even after they force their way into his castle, he dismisses them. When the Cowardly Lion lets out an upset roar, Toto gets startled and knocks over a nearby folding wall; behind the wall stands the Unicorn of Odd's true identity: Trixie.
Trixie confesses that she is an ordinary stage magician from Appleloosa, Nebraska, whose hot air balloon crashed in the land of Odd some time ago. The creatures of Odd believed her to be a great and powerful unicorn because she fell from the sky, and she manipulated that belief to secure her position as the "Unicorn of Odd". Despite this revelation, the Scarecrow, Tin Woodsmare, and Cowardly Lion still want a brain, a heart, and courage. Trixie grants their wishes with minimal thought and effort: she fills the Scarecrow's head with bran and metal tacks, makes a heart-shaped pouch filled with sand for the Woodsmare, and gives the Cowardly Lion a jug of orange juice labeled "courage".
To grant Dorothy's wish to return to Kansas, Trixie offers the hot air balloon that brought her to Odd in the first place and decides to go back to Kansas with her. Unfortunately, a mishap during the balloon's takeoff causes Trixie to depart Odd alone, leaving Dorothy and Toto behind. Without any other way to return to Kansas, Dorothy decides to seek out the other Good Princess - Glinda of the South.
Dorothy and her friends travel south from the Emerald City, past a number of dangerous and strange creatures, until they reach Glinda's castle in the kingdom of the Quadlings. There, they meet with Glinda (portrayed by Twilight Sparkle) and explain Dorothy's homesick dilemma. Glinda reveals to Dorothy that she had the ability to return home ever since she first arrived in the land of Odd. She instructs Dorothy to click her heels together three times, and the silver horseshoes she is wearing will magically transport her anywhere she desires.
After saying goodbye to her Odd friends and receiving Glinda's magic blessing, Dorothy clicks her heels together three times, and a gust of wind drops her and Toto just outside their Ponyville farm home. Dorothy reunites with her Uncle Henry and Granny Em, and the silver horseshoes that brought her home have disappeared.
Quotes[]
- Changeling 1: If we don't have the rights to the music, what are we supposed to be singing?
- Changeling 2: Don't sing anything! Editorial has to clear any music?
- Changeling 3: Just parade in silence!
- Changeling 1: Sorry! Please don't eat me!
- Fluttershy: Oh, it's okay. I was only really locked up for a couple pages.
- Applejack: You tell that unicorn that if he does not see us now, I will be forced to call my friends the Winged Monkeys. And they will force him to see us and keep his promise.
- Unicorn of Odd: I am everywhere! I am all around you! Wooooooo!
- Trixie: Oh...um...hello. I can explain.
- Trixie: Give me your head. I'll give you some brains.
- Pinkie Pie: Here you go!
- Trixie: You know, I should really be the star of the next one of these adaptations we do. What do you think of the Great and Powerful Sherlock Holmes and her trusty assistant Doctor Starlight Glimmer?
- Rarity: I finally got my heart! Ooh, it's so heavy.
- Trixie: Yes, well, that's definitely because it's full of feelings and not sand.
- Applejack: Wait, come back!
- Trixie: I can't come back. Hot-air balloons don't have reverse!
- Applejack: Hey, who is this, and where do I find her?
- Royal Guard: You mean, Glinda, the Good Princess of the South? You...go south.
- Apple Bloom: Come right in, ma'am.
- Sweetie Belle: Glinda's been expecting you.
- Scootaloo: You didn't bring any houses to drop on people, did you? We'll be watchin' you!
- Twilight Sparkle: I am Glinda, the Good Princess. What can I do for you, my child?
- Applejack: Child seems kind of condescending. She can't be much older than us.
- Pinkie Pie: I'm glad you didn't leave before I met you. I think Odd is much better off because of you.
- Rarity: And I know I have loved our time together because I can feel it in my big, new heart.
- Fluttershy: It's good that I'm brave now, because how else could I let you go?
- Applejack: I'm gonna miss all of you very much. And if you ever find yourself in Kansas, come on by and visit.
