It's been a while since I've been on here, so let's talk about why MLP's series finale, The Ending of the End/The Last Problem, is the worst in cartoon history.
MLP was going downhill fast, and it kinda started with Starlight's redemption. Sure a lot of people didn't like Twilight becoming an Alicorn, but it was Starlight that began to ruin the show. Season 6 was not as good as Seasons 1-5, and at the time, I thought it was the worst ever. Season 7 was also a pretty bad season but at least we didn't have anything to complain about unlike the rest of the seasons.
Season 3 - Twilight Becomes an Alicorn
Season 4 - Twilight's library is destroyed
Season 5 - Starlight reforms
Season 6 - Starlight saves equestria and reforms all the changelings except Chrysalis
Season 7 - nothing
Season 8 - The School of Friendship
Speaking of, season 8 was much worse than 6-7. There were no good episodes. Even the best episode, What Lies Beneath, was just average at best. I wasn't suprised when Cozy Glow revealed to be evil. In fact, a "cheat sheet" from before the season began revealed that she would be the main villain. Literally everyone saw that coming, and we get another bad villain.
Speaking of the villains, Starlight Glimmer was the last good villain the show ever had. Since then, every villain in the show has been terrible. The Pony of Shadows had zero screentime, did not do anything, and is basically a Nightmare Moon clone. The Storm King has no backstory and he is basically a Tirek clone with Discord's personality. He doesn't even have a real name. Cozy Glow was the worst villain the show ever had until the finale, when one "reformed" villain betrayed us all.
Season 9's opener was somewhat better than say, School Daze or The Crystalling, even if it felt rushed. I remember when we all saw Grogar for the first time in G4. The biggest bad. The ultimate evil of MLP. We were all hyped up for the epic finale. Then several months later, the finale came. I think the writers purposely tried to create the worst possible finale for a show, and they succeeded.
It turns out, Grogar was discord in disguise all along, and that he isn't going to be the villain in the finale. This is literally the worst plot twist in history. Grogar had so much potential to be the best villain in the series, and they ruined it. Not only did they not make Grogar the main villain, but they set it up to where Grogar could NEVER return. A series of events led to his bell being stolen and all his magic being drained by other villains. Twilight defeats the villains and rids them of their magic. So now we know that Grogar's magic is gone forever, but what about his bell? It's unknown what happened to the bell afterwards, but we do know that without magic, Grogar would never be able to get his bell back, meaning, he could never use his bell to steal magic and become as powerful as he once was. This basically killed any chance of the real Grogar ever returning in the comics or in G5.
And what made the finale even worse is the villains not reforming. The princesses think it's perfectly fine to kill off a child. They could've at least sent her to a mental hospital or make her one of Twilight's slaves.
Discord betrayed everyone. The brony fandom and MLP:FiM was all for nothing. We all wasted years of our lives (some more than others) for literally no reason.
So here's how Season 9 could've been better:
- Grogar is the real Grogar, not Discord pretending to be Grogar.
- After King Sombra is defeated, Grogar revives him again, and Sombra submits to him.
- In Frenemies, after Chrysalis snaps and reveals to the villains her own plan, Grogar (who had seen all this) immediately summons them back revealing he heard everything and threatens to send them all back to where they came from if they even think about betraying him again.
- The finale is now three parts (instead of two parts plus an epilogue). Grogar is the main villain in the finale. The other four villains (including Cozy Glow/The Pony of Shadows) are defeated first, with Grogar showing up as the final boss, more powerful than the other four villains combined. Grogar is eventually defeated and destroyed.
- The other four villains backstories are revealed.
- Tirek returns home with his brother Scorpan. Chrysalis returns to the changeling kingdom where she rules alongside Thorax. King Sombra is destroyed once again. Cozy Glow returns to the school of friendship and gets reformed.
