A magical source

Hi Mysterious Brony! I was wondering where you get your episodes from, because this is simply wonderful. (Also, are you using VLC's snapshot? just wondering) Thanks! Steph physarum (talk) FANMADE Octavia by the fireside 03:48, October 23, 2012 (UTC)

Hi! Episodes are from iTunes with corrected colors. And they don't have so much lines and curves with jagged distortions, that can be often seen on screenshots from MLP episodes all over the internet.
And I don't use VLC, I use Media Player Classic.
The only big problem with updating image files for me is, that today I encountered with a big glitch today, and I just stopped replacing images on this Wikia. Because their previews or even full-sized versions remain as they were before uploading the new versions of image files. But their descripitons about sized and demensions are from my new screenshots.
And this glich appears in any browser with cleared cache... So I don't know what to do. I'll just wait. If my first images won't start to show correctly at least tomorrow I will assume that I'm doing something wrong and since I don't know what, I will have just stop updating existing files... :( AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 03:57, October 23, 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I've been hunting around for the best source, and yours is like... magical. Literally. I don't know much about the non-responsive server issue, except something very similar has happened to me before, but it worked out for me eventually. Please don't stop uploading because the pictures are "SO AWESOME!" Also, if it's not too much to ask of you, could you kindly link the download source you use so I can check it out and/or use it myself? :3 Thanks for everything, Steph physarum (talk) FANMADE Octavia by the fireside 04:05, October 23, 2012 (UTC)
Can you try to open this image AotD_Finale1.png in the full 1,280 x 720 demensions and check if there is the old file with the demensions 1,184px × 631 with watermarks, or the new file without watermarks with 1,280 x 720 demensions?
Because I still can't see the results of my uploading.
Or just open the current version of the full-sized image you see and put it on image hosting as imgur for example, so I could see, if this is only my problem, or all people anyway can' see the results of my uploading.
And about the source. I don't know where to just download such episodes from the internet.
A friend of mine, who bought them from iTunes, gave them to me to watch and make screenshots. So here I can't help. I'm sorry. AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 04:37, October 23, 2012 (UTC)
The most current version (22:06 Oct 22nd, 2012) looks great, 1280x720 and no watermarks. You need to relax. o_o Wait, so you use the legit iTunes video with Media Player Classic? :O I bought Season 1 on iTunes, but the file sizes are way too large for my little laptop so I have to use Torrent.
p.s. Really, the most current version looks great. Steph physarum (talk) FANMADE Octavia by the fireside 04:45, October 23, 2012 (UTC)
But then I don't understand why I can't see it in any web-browser. :( The current version opens like the old one. And the preview is from the old one, too. Some links from history of file changes open my new version for me. And that's all... I can't get how such a glitch even possible. :( AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 05:04, October 23, 2012 (UTC)
At least I figured out that I can use ?action=purge after the image link to see what most of the other people will see. So I countinue uploading, since now I can see the results. :) AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 06:43, October 23, 2012 (UTC)

Image distribution

Hi, MysteriousBrony, and thank you for uploading fantabulous pictures and other gallery edits! One minor reminder: after you upload an image, please add it to relevant galleries. For example, File:Dash anf Gilda starting singing the chant S1E5.png would go in Rainbow Dash's gallery and Gilda's gallery. Other than that, it's perfect. Thanks, Steph physarum (talk) FANMADE Octavia by the fireside 22:17, October 25, 2012 (UTC)

Understood. :) I will add my new images to galleries, if I will undestand into which gallery they should go. :) And I won't risk to do it for the already existing images, when I just upload the new version of them. By the way, at first, I didn't know that I had to add categories to my new images. Now I add them, when I'm sure to which category they belong. :) AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 23:22, October 25, 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. Also, if you ever need to rename a picture with a typo in it, feel free to tell me or another image control/admin and we can fix it in a jiffy. The "anf" in that picture isn't a big deal, so don't worry about that one. Steph physarum (talk) FANMADE Octavia by the fireside 23:25, October 25, 2012 (UTC)
I don't know how I didn't notice that typo. :) By the way, if I changed the name of the file, while uploading the new version of the existing picture, would that rename that picture, or it would just cause uploading the new separate file, without affecting the original file? Because, sometimes there aren't proper names in the existing pictures. AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 23:32, October 25, 2012 (UTC)
You mean when you're uploading better quality versions? "Upload a new version of this file" won't change the wiki's file name, so you don't have to give it an elaborate name on your computer :D And yeah, there are lots of shoddy file names and only image control people and admins have the ability to actually fix file names. As you can probably tell, it's a lot of work, and it's one of the reason why I wanted to tell you about the naming rules in the first place. For example, this is just a fraction of files that need to be renamed. Steph physarum (talk) FANMADE Octavia by the fireside 23:43, October 25, 2012 (UTC)
I meant, that when I'm uploading the better quality version, there are these fields: "Destination filename:" "File changes:". I add some info to the "File changes". But what would happen, if I changed the name in the "Destination filename"? :) AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 23:50, October 25, 2012 (UTC)

Whoops, my bad. I don't think you can change the "Destination filename" at all, and even if you hacked the system somehow (LOL) so that you could, it would ruin the whole process because "Destination filename" means "I want to update a picture with this name". Steph physarum (talk) FANMADE Octavia by the fireside 23:55, October 25, 2012 (UTC)

I see. :) Thank you for the answers! ^_^ AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 00:01, October 26, 2012 (UTC)

Uploading new versions

Please don't upload a new version of an image when the only thing that is changing is the color levels, such as here. I use the highest quality possible and I think the non-color-corrected versions are better, so there's no reason to upload over it. Here also - color-correction does NOT constitute higher quality. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 05:22, November 5, 2012 (UTC)

Sorry I worded my message a little strongly. I didn't mean to diminish how great it is that you're helping with making high-quality images. I'm just saying that I compared the revisions of those pictures and I didn't notice any edges changing, only the colors. There are many other images that should be focused on rather than worrying about little things (which aren't visible at the size they're displayed in galleries) in images that are already very high quality. I don't know much about your other points so I can't really discuss them, but I'm curious, do you have a source for where you got this information about color-correction? Again, thank you for your help in improving images, but I'd say first focus should be on images that aren't anywhere near high quality to begin with. There are plenty of them. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 07:20, November 5, 2012 (UTC)
For example look at Twiglith's mane here. In the old picture lines in Twilight's mane are jagged, in full size picture.
About focusing on bad images... I wanted to go in order. First of all I did all songs pages. No I was going to start on episodes pages. So I uploaded every picture, even with a little jagged lines. Just to make everything perfect. It's how was going to I work. If I can't do it, then I can't do anything at all. I'm not sure if I can tell when quaility is too good to change it on my screenshots, so I don't want to risk spend my time on doing screenshots, that might be replaced because of that strange reason. Really. Jagged lines, even a few of them on the picture, can't be a good quality. I can't agree with you about it... sorry... :( For me, every imperfect picture needs a replacemnt, so all the lines will be decent. And it's not about color corrections... It's about decent lines. AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 07:30, November 5, 2012 (UTC)
I don't see any jaggedness there. Maybe there's a graphics card difference or something...but the lines are even worse with color correction. They're all blurred. Isn't it better to have clearly-defined lines? I don't see the point in uploading the CC versions of images that are already perfect in someone else's opinion. Just skip over the ones that are already in one of the HQ versions. I'd rather not see color-correction become the standard appearance, either. It would take you a long time to replace every single image. I already did a lot of work on it, with my high quality source, and there's still a ridiculous amount to do, which is part of why I stopped being so active. It's too much work, and you're just creating more for yourself by wanting to replace images that are already as perfect as humanly possible. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 07:40, November 5, 2012 (UTC)
First of all, about color correction. It was done by iTunes for Apple devices, because they are too bright for original colors. I didn't remember the source. But people checked that. And that's true. The most dicent sources now are from iTunes. And if they aren't color corrected - that are lame colors, that weren't in the show. There even no good Balance of White on them. And some colors looks wrong at all. I can understand that you're now used to the wrong-colored version, so you can't accept the original normal quality.
Second of all, those lines are supposed to be smooth. The show was made and rendered in Flash animation. And all the lines smooth, that you called blurry. About jagged lines. Okay. I will show them to you on that screenshot. You just don't know what I mean. So you don't notice them. It can't depend on Graphics card, beacause it's just an image file. Lines on images aren't affected by graphics cards. Only video files depend on graphics card.
Here's the link where are the old and my version of the image, where I marked the places with notisable jagged lines:
Just look very closely, and compare those parts of the image. On the first part they are just not smooth, with jagged adges. And on the second one they are all smoth, how the supposed to be. Anyway... As I said, I pefer only perfect quality. If you don't believe me or can't see it, okay. But I know what I see. I see distortions in lines, and that were never a good quality for any screenshots for any movie or animated show. AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 07:58, November 5, 2012 (UTC)

You said "but it's pointless to replace one with an equivalent in the other". But I'm saying, that lines looks better and how they are supposed to be with good rendering, on my screenshots. It's not about color correction at all. And I don't know who else can help to find who is right. AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 08:07, November 5, 2012 (UTC)

If Apple did the color correction to make the show look better on its devices, how does that mean that it's closer to what was intended? The versions without color correction are the "original" as far as I can tell. But you're right, I am accustomed to the non-CC versions. There's a difference between smooth and blurred. The only reason there aren't jagged edges in the places you circles are because there are no edges, they've been highly blurred. And if I have to look that closely and still can barely see any jaggedness, it's not really worth replacing with an image of questionably higher quality. There was a forum discussion that brought up other issues with the color-corrected versions, but I'm not sure where that is right now; maybe someone else might remember. Another discussion is here. In any case, it's far from perfect. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 08:26, November 5, 2012 (UTC)
"If Apple did the color correction to make the show look better on its devices, how does that mean that it's closer to what was intended?"
No, that's not what I said... (Maybe that's because of my bad knowledge of English). Color-corrected episodes that we're talking about are corrected to the original, after Apple's bad correction. So, we have corrected to bad colors versions on iTunes, and CC versions, that bring back the original colors that were ruined by Apple's iTunes. I hope now I explained better. :))
Well, you'll see it yourself, when official Blu-Ray discs will be released. There will be normal colors for sure. AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 08:36, November 5, 2012 (UTC)
Ah, yeah, that makes more sense. I still think the non-CC look better - here is the other forum discussion about this. It looks like we couldn't really agree on anything there either. Just to simplify things, I think it would be best to leave alone highest-possible-quality (either CC or not) images until we eventually get some kind of confirmation of what is best and/or most official. I don't upload over color-corrected images when they're high-quality 720p, and I'd prefer that we could agree to a kind of truce about this - only replace images that are low-quality, using whatever HQ source you prefer. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 08:48, November 5, 2012 (UTC)
Okay. XD
But you know, there were another reason, too. X3 If I replace some very bad images or add my own uploaded images on a page with my screenshots, I just thought that it would be better to keep all the quality of screeshots the same on any particular page. So there won't be any mess with differently looking screenshots.
For example, there are 10 screenshots on a page, and five of them are really bad. So wound't it be better to replace other five screenshots to make all the screenshots look the same on a page? AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 08:55, November 5, 2012 (UTC)
Sorry to jump into a middle of a conversation, but what you were describing happens to be one of my greatest fears... editing-war-like situations where users re-upload every single image just to get the colours "consistent"... I strongly recommend getting used to seeing CCs and OCs side by side. You would go crazy trying to make everything "consistent", because your valuable and much-needed energy should be spent in a more productive fashion. :D Steph physarum (talk) Filly_Rarity_crop_S1E23.png 22:29, November 5, 2012 (UTC)

Re: About song boxes on pages

Sorry; that was an oversight on my part. The bot flag hides your edits from view, but in order to rename files, you would also need image control rights.

I renamed the file you most recently uploaded, but if you're unable to follow the file-naming pattern we agreed upon, don't worry about it. Most videos on the Wiki don't adhere to a strict naming structure anyway. furdklZ.png 2xoHxMt.gif 14:14, April 16, 2017 (UTC)

Oh, I see. :) By the way, before uploading my own file, I tried to simply update your initial file, twice. But it didn't work. Probably because I have lower rights though. AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 14:20, April 16, 2017 (UTC)
Legend of Everyfree and Season 6 songs are done! I'm using this summary for edits: "Updating the videos, because YouTube Flash API was officially deprecated."
I have a question though. Should I check the "minor edit" every time I replace a youtube tag with a video one, or it's not really required? AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 10:22, April 17, 2017 (UTC)
This one was tricky to edit:
I had to figure out how to keep both videos in one infobox, as they were initially. I hope I did it correctly. AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 11:02, April 17, 2017 (UTC)
No, checking the "minor edit" box isn't necessary every time. And The Seeds of the Past (part 1 & 2) looks just fine. furdklZ.png 2xoHxMt.gif 12:13, April 17, 2017 (UTC)

Videos on song articles

I saw what went wrong with the videos on the song page, and I have decided to give you a little help. I added videos for Friendship Games. Just a little heads-up. Sorry, but I can't seem to find it from your channel and decided to use the existing ID. Brotaraft (talk) 15:02, April 17, 2017 (UTC)

P.S.: I made a new section so I don't disturb your conversation with ImperfectXIII.

That's fine. :) I only have first two EG movies' songs on my second channel (linked on my main channel). I do have all the show songs though in highest quality.
Well, any help is nice. :) Still, just in case, so you don't spend your free time on this particular task specifically, I want to mention that I got a bot flag on my account to edit all the song pages within a few days, as I planned. I already did season 6 and EG 4 pages today, and be doing more later as I get free time again. So, either way all the song pages will be updated within a few days. AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 15:34, April 17, 2017 (UTC)
OK. But since I have free time, I have readded videos for season 5 and Rainbow Rocks. Brotaraft (talk) 09:13, April 18, 2017 (UTC)
Thanks! Good job. :)
By the way, next time make sure you never use a Visual Editor (you can change it to the "source editor" to be used by default, in your account seetings). Because I just had to fix a broken source code for songs: Bad Counter Spell, Better Than Ever, Rainbow Rocks (song) and Tricks Up My Sleeve (oh, also, in that one you replaced only one song, so I added the one you didn't find on youtube).
Always double check what your source code looks like after you publish your new edit, even if you previewed it before publishing. :) - AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 10:52, April 18, 2017 (UTC)
Alright. Thanks for the advice. I thought it's always the same wherever I edit it from. Sorry if I make your task more complicated. Brotaraft (talk) 14:18, April 18, 2017 (UTC)

You're one of the best people who uploads English MLP:FiM songs because your videos are always in high quality in both video and sound, and the colours are almost ALWAYS how they are supposed to be. ---Myina (age 16) 13:58, February 10, 2019 (UTC)

Can you by any chance upload the video Better Way to be Bad on your YouTube channel please? DavidBrennan99 (talk) 19:52, May 22, 2019 (UTC)David Brennan

Check the song's page on this wiki, I already included it there.
You can't see it on my channel yet, since it's unlisted for now, because it's waiting for a dispute to go through, even though the viewing restrictions were lifted already. There's still a chance that after a dispute is fully reviewed it still be blocked again, so I don't risk publishing it.
But, through an unlisted link it's still possible to watch it even now, so that's why I posted it on the song's page on this wiki already. And you can access it from there. AstrumSpark FANMADE AstrumSpark Avatar (talk) 20:27, May 22, 2019 (UTC)
