Character infobox template's tab limit

Twilight Sparkle as a Crystal Pony ID S3E2
I was going to add a profile image of Twilight Sparkle's Crystal form (used here rather than linked to in order to keep it out of Special:UnusedFiles) under a new tab in the infobox on her article, but found that Template:Infobox character hasn't been set up for enough tabs to do so. Is there any particular reason that it's only set up for four tabs, or can it be set up for more? (7)6(four) (talk) 23:27, October 9, 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, the cool thing about the coding there is that it's flexible, so more tabs could be added at any time. I've gone ahead and added another tab.-- Undisguised_Nyx_by_AibotNya.pngJonny Manztalkcontribse-mailedit count 23:53, October 9, 2013 (UTC)Disguised_Nyx_by_AibotNya.png
I got rid of it because as it turns out, having that many tabs I guess breaks the width of the infobox; I suppose that'll have to be adjusted later. Sorry about that.-- Undisguised_Nyx_by_AibotNya.pngJonny Manztalkcontribse-mailedit count 00:01, October 10, 2013 (UTC)Disguised_Nyx_by_AibotNya.png
Ah, thanks for trying. (7)6(four) (talk) 00:11, October 10, 2013 (UTC)
I manually put in a space to make the tabs wrap. Haven't been able to figure out how to fix the vertical spacing, though. Alternatively, we could make the font size on those tabs smaller. I think I prefer that to the wrapping, since it keeps all the tabs lined up with the top of the box. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 00:35, October 10, 2013 (UTC)
Changed it to this method, let me know what you think. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 00:51, October 10, 2013 (UTC)

Re: Multicolumn TOC script

Hello, since I am use to creators leaving their name in the coding, I didn't look to see if there were credits.

So thanks to bring that to my attention. I do make it a habit to credit many people who help me out with wikis. -- Bunai82 (talk) 19:33, October 12, 2013 (UTC)

Brenda as Matilda

The voice actor who told me Brenda voiced Matilda didn't want to be known that he gave that info out. Can I e-mail you the proof privately? Dogman15 (talk) 05:14, October 13, 2013 (UTC)

Just black out the name and upload it or something. It doesn't matter if I know there's proof. It needs to be publicly available. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 05:25, October 13, 2013 (UTC)
But if I black out the name, it could be anybody. I'm e-mailing you using Wikia. Dogman15 (talk) 05:54, October 13, 2013 (UTC)
Ah, true. I don't need the picture, I trust that you're not making it up, but I like there to be some kind of statement of the source on things like that. I don't suppose would be an acceptably formatted citation there :P. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 06:00, October 13, 2013 (UTC)
Just please let me e-mail you the picture... or is there another website I can network with you on? Twitter? Facebook? Reddit? Steam? Dogman15 (talk) 06:01, October 13, 2013 (UTC)
Once a way to handle this is worked out, would the way likely also be worth using for citing the English VA of "Snowflake", or should we keep using the currently-linked-to image since that's already been made publicly available? (7)6(four) (talk) 08:17, October 13, 2013 (UTC)
I don't know if there's a way to work it out, maybe we just have to wait for a revealable source. What's insufficient about the Snowflake image? ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 08:24, October 13, 2013 (UTC)
That image isn't insufficient, it just looks like it had been in a situation like this one but in that case resolved by that (apparently-intended-to-be-)private source getting revealed, so if a way to use the Matilda source while maintaining privacy does get worked out, I'm wondering if it should be retroactively applied to the "Snowflake" source. Hello Bobo, it's not the first time I have to manually indent and embolden the auto wiki h5. Is there a reason I don't get for leaving the tag as normal text – read : the css doesn't alter h5 compared to p for example, right ? If not, would you be so kind as to please see to it being fixed in our css ? Thanks –  Drakep6yPvD4.png  13:45, October 13, 2013 (UTC)

Do we even used h5 or h6 anywhere? I'm a little hesitant to change something like that but I guess consistency with our customized h3 and h4 would be good. Show me somewhere it's used and I'll see how changing it looks. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 22:30, October 13, 2013 (UTC)
Here, with h5 modified manually. Just look at a previous version and you'll see how dull the original h5 looks. If you think the use of h5 in an article means it has not an optimal structure for a wiki, your suggestions for improvement are most welcome, because I might tend to overcategorize stuff, or something... And thanks in advance for fixing h6 too :p Thanks –  Drakep6yPvD4.png  01:00, October 14, 2013 (UTC)
H5 can be fine sometimes, doubt we'd use h6 though. I just bolded h5 for now since indenting it that much looks a little weird, but if other people think it would better I'd be fine with it. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 01:20, October 14, 2013 (UTC)
Gave you my opinion, and will manually indent if you don't mind. Thank you for the alteration. You know, just in case one comes with a precise idea of his h6 implementation, why not be safe and at least make it a sort of second h5 with indentation ? Not saying I'd replace, doesn't work like this, but could prevent dismay. Thanks –  Drakep6yPvD4.png  20:34, October 15, 2013 (UTC)

Abuse filter for excessive caps blocking replies on (7)6(four) user talk page

At User talk:(7)6(four)#Home media tables redux, your AppearancesRow template example has excessive capitalization according to the abuse filter, which thus blocks replies on that page. (7)6(four) (talk) 20:35, October 14, 2013 (UTC)

Thumbnails page

Hello Bobo, I saw your ambox notice on Project:Placeholder_names/Thumbnails and I also noticed on that page, many many images are now broken. I see that you are keeping hold of a more up-to-date userpage version for it, but could you update the actual one soon since there's so many broken images? I just noticed it again today and imo I think it needs to be fixed. I would do it myself but I don't know how it works really so I'm asking you. Kind regards, – Ozuzanna 14:48, October 15, 2013 (UTC)

Also it's clogging up Special:WantedFiles pretty bad. – Ozuzanna 14:53, October 15, 2013 (UTC)
The broken links happened when image control users without admin rights (like myself back when I was in IC) renamed the files but couldn't edit that page. I manually updated the file links for one section, but I'm wondering if there's a faster way to do all of them. Steph physarum (talk) 00:09, October 16, 2013 (UTC)
I'm quite aware. Why don't we just finish the freaking new version? All it needs is sorting into some helpful categories, and any updating that needs doing since it was last updated. Then we'll never have to bother with all that junk. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 00:39, October 16, 2013 (UTC)
As long as this is being talked about, these 33 since-officially-named ponies' polls listed there are no longer necessary:
(7)6(four) (talk) 01:51, October 16, 2013 (UTC)
Again, won't matter as soon as the page is replaced with the sandbox version (feel free to remove the obsolete one from there). Doesn't really matter if the polls still exist on Reddit, since polls older than six months can't be commented or voted in. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 02:19, October 16, 2013 (UTC)
Removed the obsolete one from the sandbox version (I somehow missed the "Anyone is welcome to help with this project!" ambox at the top there until now). (7)6(four) (talk) 02:28, October 16, 2013 (UTC)

Another request

Hi Bobo. I have a problem with a script. When you have time, can you find out what's wrong please? The script is MediaWiki:Common.js/IsQuestion.js. It is crapping all the js.

Thanks again Bobo! — Jr Mime (talk) 23:39, October 15, 2013 (UTC)

Sure, I'll take a look. What specifically is going wrong? ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 00:39, October 16, 2013 (UTC)
I'm getting document.getElementById is undefined, and all JS doesn't work when it is enabled. — Jr Mime (talk) 02:21, October 16, 2013 (UTC)
HTML IDs are unique identifiers, and therefore getElementById only ever returns one result. Because of that, the [1] after the method is throwing it off (that's meant to be used for things that return an array like getElementsByTagName). Additionally, you need to use the ID of the form that the input element is a part of, not the input element itself (so that will have to be changed to use the form's ID instead). You may want to throw event.preventDefault() into the conditional for if the question doesn't contain those words as well so the question isn't lost when the form is submitted. That would just stop the form from submitting. Also also, you have the function inside two automatically called functions for some reason that I may not notice. That doesn't hurt anything, the second one just seems a little unnecessary.  Food 25px-Surprise.png  04:55, October 16, 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, what Food said :P. Also, I didn't even notice your reply since you left it with a bot flag on and there was another message right after that. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 05:06, October 16, 2013 (UTC)

Comic template needs Friends Forever

Template:Comic needs to be updated to include My Little Pony: Friends Forever (I'd figure out how and update it myself, but I'm not sure what to use for that series). (7)6(four) (talk) 04:41, October 18, 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, done. I just called it "ff", if you were referring to the abbreviation used. Doesn't have to be formal. Also, using |g= with it will link to a /Gallery on that page, but I assume that will exist soon enough anyway. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 04:56, October 18, 2013 (UTC)

template citation needed

Hello Bobo, wondering if you think it'd be a good idea to add possible parameters to Citation needed such as |name="name of the ref in order not to have to replicate it" which acts like ref name="", or |blabla which replaces the "citation needed" text by "blabla". Also, if it is, you are most encouraged to go ahead, this code is not 100% my cup of tea, especially considering it's a template. Thanks –  Drakep6yPvD4.png  01:46, November 18, 2013 (UTC)

Doesn't seem necessary. You can't know when inserting the template that different unsourced information could have the same reference. And I think consistency of the text in this case is preferable. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 02:54, November 18, 2013 (UTC)
You know, among the list of things "only I do"... I need a citation for two things, and I know it's the same citation, just that I don't presently have time/motivation/material to fill it with anything, hence template... so now I do my ref name on both, and put the template inside the ref, as in, bottom of the page. Also, I accept your second point. Thanks –  Drakep6yPvD4.png  23:25, November 19, 2013 (UTC)
also, I like your new pseudo :p
I thought it might be something like that. I'd say just leave it alone entirely until you're up to putting in the citation. And thanks :P ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 05:57, November 20, 2013 (UTC)
Not sure what you mean by "leaving it alone", not putting the template where it is needed ? Blasphemy ! Also, on a completely unrelated subject, what should I take care of in my crazy css tweaks, in order for fluid layout to work regardless of what I put in ? In other words, what does fluid layout affect, em's ? px's ? % ? pt's ? cm's ?... one may use many combos in order to find the ultimately finely pixel-tuned system (as for lyrics' or locations' tables, among many), but I'm afraid "adaptability" requires a specific set of mesurement units ; right ? Thanks –  Drakep6yPvD4.png  18:22, November 20, 2013 (UTC)
The general principle of fluid width is to use percentage widths unless you want the element to have the same width for all displays. But sometimes you have to consider that this might cause some undesired behavior for very large or very small displays. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 04:42, November 21, 2013 (UTC)
Means the template repairman has to change all px to ems and % in templates – such as images... – right ? Also, what did you mean by "leave it alone entirely" ? Thanks –  Drakep6yPvD4.png  00:27, November 22, 2013 (UTC)
Not in images, those should usually be in px. It's mainly divs and stuff like that, containers. Just don't worry about it. I'll care of it, if I ever get a chance (my time is currently severely limited). And you guessed right, if you don't want to add the citations but you know they exist then just don't bother changing anything. No point. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 05:07, November 22, 2013 (UTC)

Hello Bob, it seems that an unconnected person has access to "edit" (redirects to source with connection prompt, right ?), "source" and "history", and a connected one only to "edit" and "history" or "source" and "history" (protected pages). Could you make the 3 options apparent for all configurations please (protected page would redirect edit to source with a sysop right denial stuff) ? Maybe with "source" as default for non-connected and protected ? Thanks –  Drakep6yPvD4.png  18:47, November 20, 2013 (UTC)

Why would I want to make anything harder to use? I'm pretty sure everything there already works the best it can. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 04:42, November 21, 2013 (UTC)
It could indeed appear as more complicated to add an option to the menu. However, I see no issue adding an option to see source alone even when connected, if not there, at least on top of the page somewhere. Do you ? Thanks –  Drakep6yPvD4.png  00:27, November 22, 2013 (UTC)
I see no point in that. Anyone who would use such a button probably has visual editing disabled anyway and thus would see the same thing by clicking edit. Even if not, I don't see the extra click as something that would need to happen very often so it's not really worth doing. If you want help doing the JavaScript, just ask on the Community forums. Hopefully someone will get to you. I don't have time to do it presently even if I wanted to. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 05:07, November 22, 2013 (UTC)

Hello Bob, do we consider the mane6 "no longer connected to the elements", as discussed by twi and aj in the end of 402 ? Hence, changing or not each of the 6 pages. Don't know for you, but the complete review of a few historical elements plus new ones in these episodes was all I needed to feel refreshed by the new season ;) I'd usually use Skype, but won't be able to for some time. If you think I would be wise to ask my stuff to another of the oligarchs, please go ahead, I got that you don't have much time for all these lower considerations...? Thanks –  Drakep6yPvD4.png  22:22, November 23, 2013 (UTC)

IMO they still represent those elements, they just can't wield the physical things since they gave them back to the tree. Cover it as you will, it's not my right to determine how we should treat changes. As always, if people disagree on how it should be covered, a topic should be started in the forum (assuming comments on the page won't do). ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 06:30, November 24, 2013 (UTC)

Hello Bob, sorry for the ruckus on the bot page, may you please delete all that garbage (what's the appropriate way to do so ?) ? Also, how may I know what links to a specific section of an article when about to modify it, not to break too much stuff ? Also, do you know any external offline wikicode editor program ? Thanks –  Drakep6yPvD4.png  18:05, November 29, 2013 (UTC)

I figure it's okay to remove as long as we both to agree to it, so I did so. You can't find section links, not even through the API; one would have to parse page source manually (which could be done through the API). Not sure if there's already some tool available for that. Depending on what you're changing, it's either not really a major issue or something that can be done by a bot (the latter usually for list of ponies changes and such). Usually if I want to edit wikicode in a different window I use Notepad. It's pretty much the same as using this textfield, with the addition of find and replace. If you want something more customizable, Notepad++ is a good option. I'm not aware of any programs with syntax highlighting or anything more advanced for wikicode. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 07:24, November 30, 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. So how do you do to change links linking to a section, leave the bot do it automatically ? I found far more broken section links than page links on the wiki, so not sure it checks the < h1(+)> anchors too, especially since it replaces "_" by " " for page links, but often disregards these for sections (depends on the bot ?). I use a notepad equivalent for the f&r function, but in regards of highlighting, it offers checking for many web languages, but not wikicode, so I have to do it with my own sauce. Thanks –  Drakep6yPvD4.png  12:59, November 30, 2013 (UTC)
Yeah it partially depends on who's running it, but usually we're pretty thorough when we do actually run a bot. The heading level is irrelevant, it just changes all the targets in the source pages. Now I'm tempted to write this script, but I'm not sure I'll have time any time soon. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 13:08, November 30, 2013 (UTC)
Thank you, I did mean "all types of headers andall types of anchors", you understood me ;)
Also, if I may add another question, is there a way to have a list of separated numbers (where # doesn't work) automatically follow each other, like a name with optional name to put more than one template, optional degree of decimals to increment (0 would go from 5 to 6, 1 would go from 5 to 5.1 and 5.1 to 5.2, 2 would go from 5 to 5.0.1 and 5.1 to 5.1.1, +1 (or p1) would go from 5.1 to 5.1.1), and optional parameter to force a value (here 5) ?
Also, regarding table sorting, are colspan and rowspan sortable ? Thanks –  Drakep6yPvD4.png  13:16, November 30, 2013 (UTC)
No idea what you're asking with that template. I don't know of any existing templates like that, no. The rowspan number itself? You could just make it the data-sort-value of the cell (see mw:Help:Sorting). ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 13:20, November 30, 2013 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. can a template act a bit like < ref>, counting how many others there are before, or at least the last's value, or even better, ask the value of a specific one on the page (like an id parameter) ? Thanks –  Drakep6yPvD4.png  13:46, November 30, 2013 (UTC)
Nope, at least not without an extension or custom JavaScript that would fill in the number. You might be able to use ref groups to accomplish something similar. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 13:49, November 30, 2013 (UTC)
Aye. If you find some template, or advice creating one, please let me know. I'll try counter-increment css in the meanwhile, but it cannot target a specific id, it seems. If doesn't work, a ref group is a valid option, but so very constraining I'll certainly prefer to stick to manual change. Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  15:42, December 1, 2013 (UTC)

  • Can't seem to be able to make it work without a :before or such, which is (apparently?) not possible with < tag style="">. I'm pretty sure a template with custom css could do the trick. A bit like this but with < foo> or other stuff instead of the ol and li (tested, it works on ff), just to count from one to the next regardless of position. I couldn't make classes work, but it is minor. I think the only things I would care about are to not make sortable lists mess the numbers' order (especially tricky with refs or automatic counters involved), to be able to replicate a value (ref can do, theoretically the other too, but may require über tweaking), and being able to increment sub-values (not possible with refs, or is it ?, possible on the second, but may require a lot of tweaking too in case of separate tags). Your opinion ?
  • Nothing to do with this, but are there conditions to upload such a picture here ? I don't know the author of the scan, but the page comes from main series issue 2, and I think it'd find its place in Locations or Equestria.
  • Also, would you be in favour of a "list of locations" in the franchise ? I counted more than 100 (but lost the list along with my PC a few days ago)...
  • Also, should "spoken" quotes be both in "quotes and italic" (sentences or at least part with a bit of structure), in contrast to "mentions" (single or few words 'naming' without copying their sentence structure) ? Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  20:45, December 1, 2013 (UTC)
  • That's interesting, I hadn't heard of CSS counters before. It really sounds like you'll need JavaScript. You haven't said what this is actually for, so I can't say more than that at the moment, and I don't have time to help with it anyway.
  • It's just a scan of a page of the comics, right? People upload those all the time, just categorize it in comics images. Information on who scanned it doesn't matter much.
  • Well, such a list would naturally be part of the locations page when we figure out how we want to cover it properly as separate from the Equestria page. I don't think a plain list by itself is really necessary.
  • I don't think so, unless you're talking about some particular special case. Italics are only for emphasis.
~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 21:39, December 1, 2013 (UTC)
  • I understand, it was just informative.
  • would you be so kind as to please tell me again where I'm supposed to go to upload a pic ? Even Oz's dedicated guide doesn't give the link...
  • I was thinking of some table, with 'name', 'location', 'sources', 'notes', but it would worsen the "huge-table-guy" image I might have around here.

...Are you trying to say that the pages I make rarely have a clearly defined purpose, or stay indefinitely "in wait for some perfectionist love", or just (or maybe because) that I do my contribs in an over-detailed way ? :p
  • I thought that 'they repeatedly said "fun!"', 'the 'magic' of friendship', 'in a "Wuvy-duvey-Smoochy land"', and 'they say that "whenever it goes up, it is to come back down".' were the correct forms. Do we have a specific rule in this case explicitely reserving italic to emphasis ? Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  23:12, December 1, 2013 (UTC)
  • Special:Upload or from the Contribute dropdown or from the sidebar when editing in visual mode.
  • Well, English writing conventions, as I'm aware of them. See wikipedia:WP:ITAL (particularly the "Quotations in italics") section, which, as you know, our own style guide refers to as a foundation.

Ok, thanks. May I know what motivated the deletion of Earth instead of making a redirection to either Earth ponies or Hearth's Warming Eve#Act two ? Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  00:03, December 3, 2013 (UTC)
The discussion on the forum pointed out that a search would turn up all relevant pages, which I figured was better than a redirect that would only be useful half the time. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 00:06, December 3, 2013 (UTC)

Infobox episode - Allusions

With the relocation of season one and season two allusions to subpages, the infobox link to List of allusions will need to be fixed for those particular episodes. Is it possible for it to read the episode number and link to the corresponding page (i.e., List of allusions/Season one for episodes 1-26, List of allusions/Season two for episodes 27-52)? furdklZ.png 2xoHxMt.gif 06:21, November 30, 2013 (UTC)

Yep, I actually wrote a "get season" function into eps to make that easier, and just improved it. Can also get it through nameconvert when that's more convenient. Anyway, done. If season three animation errors get split that will need updating too, let me know. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 07:24, November 30, 2013 (UTC)

Background Template

Hello, Bobogoobo. I have seen that you have put the Template:Background page as a candidate for deletion because it is unspecific. May you please explain why it is unspecific? Thanks.  rarity_cutie_mark_by_up1ter-d4x5foq.pngUniCandy   talk rarity_cutie_mark_by_up1ter-d4x5foq.png 03:28, December 3, 2013 (UTC)

I said too specific, because the styling is very customized; it doesn't seem like it would encourage unique, creative user pages. I don't feel too strongly about it, so whatever. Also, you should use a user subpage for your signature to avoid crowding the page code. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 22:02, December 3, 2013 (UTC)

His messages and persistence in asking questions about the comics are starting to resemble strongly those of another user whom I remember being an annoyance in the past. No wonder I couldn't remember a name, it was these two IPs. Judging from this message, I don't think we even need a checkuser to confirm his identity. I'll go warn him to be careful. (Look through the comments on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (comics) from April to May to see about how annoying it was, considering I deleted a bunch of them.) ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 00:01, December 11, 2013 (UTC)

Infobox book

Hello Bob, would you please tell me how to proceed to create a new template for books, out of and in-universe (using the model in My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Wiki:Workshop/Daring Do book series if you want) ? Could be useful for My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Wiki:Workshop/Literature. BTW, could you please merge the Daring Do books series workshop with its part in Literature ? That'd be one article less in the workshop, to be separated later if needed. I feel the current content of Daring Do books series could only be tripled (about 40kB max I think) with the current knowledge of the series. Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  23:44, December 13, 2013 (UTC)

I don't see how that is. Knowledge of select events in the books doesn't translate to content. There's still very little we know about the Daring Do books, including how many have been written thus far and in what order certain titles fall (and yes, that includes The Griffon's Goblet). Even now, the Workshop page contains a lot of speculation. furdklZ.png 2xoHxMt.gif 00:03, December 14, 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for your input. You are always welcome to help others' contributions if you feel they may need it, and I'd appreciate you expand your views regarding speculation in these articles (on my talk, yours, or the pages'), so that it could be taken care of. I feel that your point does not invalidate either of my requests, don't you ? Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  00:42, December 14, 2013 (UTC)
Looks like you're working on both of those, you can just merge them as you see fit and mark the one for deletion, someone will get to it. As for the way you're using those infoboxes, I think simple prose would work better. With an image of the book accompanying it, I think that would be about as helpful as an infobox, and would look better. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 02:49, December 14, 2013 (UTC)
That's how merging works ?... Ok then, thanks. Concerning the infobox, I was thinking of the ones in Creatures, with information on the age, author, editor, size, subject, series and number, details, episodes of appearance, notes, stuff... Could of course be in prose, but is it you feel that for now, not enough detail is to be given for any of this to actually matter ? In this case, please consider that the infobox does not only concern in-universe books, but would also be applicable to chapter- or storybooks, I guess ? Also, is it 'better' to transclude sections of transcripts or copy said part to another article when it is about 1–3 lines ? It feels 'cleaner' to me. Do you think one should mainly use blockquotes for selective transcription of the content of the books, or redo it in their own words, with risk of more ambiguity and speculation ? It seems the second approach is more widely used, but what is your opinion on this ? Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  20:26, December 15, 2013 (UTC)
I could see a potential infobox for chapter books and other books, but the same infobox definitely couldn't be used for books in the show. As was said above, trying to fill in details for the latter would end in a lot of speculation. Better just to describe what we know for those, especially since there's no consistent set of data.
It's better to copy small quotes, as is done for every Quotes section in an article. LST should be used only for major things. Use quotes when you want to show what was exactly in the book or need that kind of detail, otherwise summary should do fine. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 23:53, December 15, 2013 (UTC)
Infoboxes are especially usefull in case of inconsistent sets of data (large panel to prepare beforehand, not much work to do afterwards). Aye, small copies it shall be, and summary when possible. In case I want to add the detail of a dialog, did I use the right method (grayed transclusion) ? Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  22:30, December 16, 2013 (UTC)
I was saying not to transclude stuff like that. I'd rather not crowd the pages with a ton of sections just for little quotes on one page. It's not like the quotes are going to change drastically, so copying them once should be fine. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 23:31, December 16, 2013 (UTC)
Yep, did that before your answer, and had a doubt, hence my question ; not modified since. Got it. Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  00:25, December 18, 2013 (UTC)

Hello Bob, sorry to bug you with this, but it seems h5 doesn't indent properly (not once more compared to h4), would you be so kind as to look at it, if you please ? I could technically use h1 for the (huge) section I'm working on, but it's just one of many sections, and h1 might seem more appropriate to make said section a subsection of a general separate part, so the problem would be the same with h5 staying. Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  21:13, December 15, 2013 (UTC)

We talked about this before, I don't think h5 (and h6) should be indented. By default there's no indentation at all, so having a header that far across the page would look weird. Content isn't indented, so the header seems a little detached. And since we so rarely use those levels, perhaps there's a better way to organize the section? And per the style guide, don't use h1 in articles. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 23:53, December 15, 2013 (UTC)
We did talk about this, just thought it was now in some archive limbo while it's just up there, didn't remember your verdict on the indent. Used another method (some levels reworked to avoid h5), works so far. Just so you know, I answered your call on my talk. Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  22:30, December 16, 2013 (UTC)
You could put it on a forum if you want (and if you think it would get replies), maybe others would disagree with my feeling on indentation. And thanks, I'll look at that when I get a chance. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 23:31, December 16, 2013 (UTC)

Fast pony list and Monobook

Per my edit there, List of ponies/fast doesn't work in Monobook. I don't know if Monobook users are a significant enough concern to bother trying to get the script to work (nor, for that matter, to bother noting it, but I figured I'd just be bold =) ). ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 11:44, December 16, 2013 (UTC)

infobox episode gallery

Hello Bobo, in Template:Infobox episode gallery, may I replace
|Row 2 info = BASEPAGENAME
|Row 2 info = <center><div style="float:left">BASEPAGENAME</div> • <div style="float:right">transcript</div></center>
|Row 2 info = <center><div style="float:left">BASEPAGENAME</div> • <div style="float:right;font-size:80%">(transcript)</div></center>
? Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  00:25, December 23, 2013 (UTC)

I'm not sure it would always fit, and it would look kinda weird. (Also, the center tag is deprecated.) I've added it in the footer instead (a custom parameter I added to Infobox), and added a gallery link to the transcript infobox as well for navigational consistency. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 01:12, December 23, 2013 (UTC)
Much better ;) Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  21:03, December 23, 2013 (UTC)

Haha, that's the first time I've heard whitespace described as unreadable. =D If you want an explanation of the non-whitespace change I made, it was a pretty simple little thing. =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:22, December 23, 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, I found it, didn't notice I was using the default values on #explode. Thanks for pointing it out, but it seems more readily understandable by keeping those in. And yeah, maybe I'm weird, but I only find whitespace helpful in specific cases (and even then I usually only add indentation, not space between arguments and such). It just makes my eyes have to travel farther to find out what's going on, I think. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 04:30, December 23, 2013 (UTC)
Without whitespace, keeping the default values probably does improve the code's understandability. I have to be honest, though, I was under the impression that <nowiki/> didn't work in StringFunctions (that's what the documentation claims, and it's been my experience in the past).
I am the exact opposite, I find it incredibly difficult to follow along with code unless it's spaced out properly. Whitespace around operators/arguments isn't as important as properly applied newlines and indentation, but it can help quite a bit too with some code. But I suppose that ultimately our respective preferences are probably a result of how we learned it, or something. Just be warned, if you ever root around in the templates on the Yu-Gi-Oh! wiki, you will be endlessly annoyed by the whitespace everywhere in them.  ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:37, December 23, 2013 (UTC)
I think it doesn't work when you put it in the string you're operating on, but it works in other parameters. I think I had trouble using it with #replace before, but otherwise it works. Yeah, I guess I learned the harder way :P. Haha, I probably won't be heading over there, but I can usually work with it. That's why I'm the resident code guy here, I have it mostly to myself :P. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 04:46, December 23, 2013 (UTC)
Ahh yes, the let's-see-if-this-works school of learning - I am a graduate myself; I actually first learned ParserFunctions (and to a lesser degree, wikimarkup and wiki editing in general) by playing around in a live template on Wikipedia years ago in some of my first contributions there (to my neverending satisfaction, the functionality I added at that time is a part of the template's descendant to this day). =D Actually, I suppose that demonstrates that I am used to decidedly *not* having the template namespace to myself; there's one other major template editor on the YGO wiki, and on the other wiki I've contributed to majorly, the Curse Minecraft wiki, I never really got around to doing much in the template NS. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:54, December 23, 2013 (UTC)

Hellow Bobogoobo.
I require your help to know one stuff around: Is that documentation of the Template:Emote says "It is supported by JavaScript." So... the template not only works with template but also with import in Common.js? It is necessary that support for the template will work?

Thanks — Scooty Dash (talk) 20:11, December 23, 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, the javascript on MediaWiki:Common.js is required. Specifically, the part under the header "Support for Template:Emote by Bobogoobo". It can mostly be copied over, but for each wiki, a different value for data.query.pages has to be given (the wgArticleId for MediaWiki:Emoticons on that wiki), as it is different from wiki to wiki, I guess. I don't know how to find that, though; I'll let Bobo answer that one.-- Undisguised_Nyx_by_AibotNya.pngJonny Manztalkcontribse-mailedit count 21:44, December 23, 2013 (UTC)Disguised_Nyx_by_AibotNya.png
Indeed. I've thought about moving it to the dev wiki to avoid pasting all that - if more than a handful of wikis start using it, I will. Anyway, you can find wgArticleId by viewing the source of the page and searching for it, or by entering wgArticleId into the browser console on the page. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 23:31, December 23, 2013 (UTC)

Hello Bobo, two things if you please, first, could you tell me what to replace the -1px margins here with ? am I supposed to use cm, pt, em...? tried -.2% without success. The issue appears when you unzoom a lot (the margin changes). Also, how does one become sysop here ? Sure, it adds a lot of glitter to the screen, but more than that, what I really mean is "what makes you guys feel someone has the qualities for it" ? Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  23:01, December 23, 2013 (UTC)

I dunno; I think any setup like that is bound to run into some problems. I don't think anything would work better than px there. And I dunno, I'm not the best one to ask about admins. I have to really like someone to support them becoming admin, just because of how I am. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 23:38, December 23, 2013 (UTC)
So what makes it not perfectly support the great unzooms, even vertically ? My bad luck ? ;) And ok, thanks.
Used border:hidden on the containing row. Seems to have fixed it. Oh, and I wish you happy stuff and good things :) Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  07:23, December 24, 2013 (UTC)

out of date template

Hello Bobo, sorry if some of my recent and future edits suck more than usual, after losing my main PC a while ago, I am now stuck with only a phone to edit wiki... And desktop mode doesn't help any more than mobile. Anyway, is there a template for pages out of date, with a reason parameter ? So far I found CE, but it's not exactly the same as saying the content has not been updated in too long a time and that this is good but was only valid up to a point in time. Thanks. Edit : Typically, this kind of screw-up is not helping me love the mobile interface... Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  00:10, December 26, 2013 (UTC)

I don't think so. Could use a custom ambox. We could make a template if it would be used often enough. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 02:24, December 26, 2013 (UTC)

Main page edit loop

I notice that the main page is caught in some sort of "edit loop" -- any edits made to the page somehow get reverted soon after publishing. Might I suggest reverting the page back to an earlier revision, and publish the most recent changes on top of that? I'd do it myself, but I attempted the same with the Power Ponies page a week back (with less than smooth results :P). After a bit of difficulty, I did eventually get the page to settle however. furdklZ.png 2xoHxMt.gif 16:19, December 30, 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, it sucks that this started as soon as Wikia went on vacation for the rest of the year. I'm not sure if reverting would do anything, or even what specifically is going on. I just saved the same revision over (I shouldn't be able to do that - something is really wonky); if that doesn't stick, you can try your method. Don't think I'd have much more luck than you would with that :P. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 16:27, December 30, 2013 (UTC)
I sent Wikia a bug report about it the last time it happened. They said they've passed it along for further investigation. I managed to get the page to accept the edits I was making last night, but I didn't do much more than multiple edits to it. It's displaying Bats! and Rarity Takes Manehattan in the slider for you, right?  FANMADE_Animated_Derpy_Hooves_desktop_ponies_sprite.gif Sig1.png Sig2.png  19:19, December 30, 2013 (UTC)

Re, would you know how to do transwiki transclusion (one article, sandbox, redirection...) ? Transwiki links (from fr.mlp to mlp for example) ? Links to non-english WP ? The wikipedia machine translation infobox ? And what would you advise for the signature, for it to always be up to date with the latest version on one unrelated wiki ? Thanks —  Drakep6yPvD4.png  16:11, January 4, 2014 (UTC)

The only thing that can be transcluded across wikis are pages in the template namespace on the community wiki. I think the only thing that's advised for is a general user page that people leave on wikis they "guest edit". Interlanguage links are like this: :en:Twilight Sparkle (without the beginning colon it's the kind that gets listed at the bottom of the page), and wikipedia:fr:Wikipédia. I don't know what people who use the same signature on multiple wikis usually do -- probably just copy it over to the same subpage. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 05:34, January 5, 2014 (UTC)
