Image uploading

I was going to upload a Hurricane Fluttershy screenshot that I'm planning to use, but I just found out that I can't upload images apparently because I'm not an autoconfirmed user yet. Could you or someone with the time please upload it for me? (If so, "Pegasi looking up at Fluttershy in flashback S2E22.png" could be its file name.) (7)6(four) (talk) 11:09, July 2, 2013 (UTC)

I had removed this, but if we aren't supposed to remove even our own posts at talk pages, then the message shall be kept even though my plan(s) changed. (7)6(four) (talk) 05:11, March 16, 2016 (UTC)

Hello, Bobogoobo. You have new messages at (7)6(four)'s talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the Talkback or Tb template.

I had forgotten another thing: Twitter images can be found at higher resolution by having image URLs end with ":orig" (for example, either of these two to this). (7)6(four) (talk) 19:01, March 30, 2015 (UTC)

Awesome, thanks. Added. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 03:04, March 31, 2015 (UTC)

Two bugs in mouseover image

Hey, I've noticed a while ago this neat feature with images appearing when you mouseover over the link. Just letting you know about two things. First, it apparently doesn't work for Mane-iac. Second, when I have a link to Flim and Flam and I write Flam, (Flam) then Flim will be shown – it might be slightly confusing to those who don't know how this code actually work. Perhaps there could be some exceptions coded for such links to articles with more than one character? Vengir (talk) 09:55, March 27, 2015 (UTC)

I know about the issue where there are multiple characters on one page, that's on my list to work on. Fixed the Mane-iac case, thanks for pointing that out. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 15:35, March 27, 2015 (UTC)
The multi-character page issue could, in the meantime, be worked around by using group images (examples: Big Boy and Runt, Fancy Pants' entourage, Iron Pony competition cheerleaders), though this wouldn't be possible for some cases (examples: Blue Moon and North Star, MandoPony). Updates for the other wikia

Hey Bobogoobo, i know you might still be busy and all, but i was wondering if you could just try to add some of the newest features and updates you did on the MLP:FIM wikia to the Bronies Wikia (which i guess you can do through the "coding page") as well, like the new "small picture of the character appearing when you touch the link to that character`s page" thing, updating the maps so its like that of this wikia, fix the "Gallery template" so the picture is a little more to the left and the text below is just a little bit upward, and etc... ?

P.S Still kinda waiting for you to reply to the message I sent you long ago on that wikia.

Bleck11 (talk) 18:46, April 4, 2015 (UTC)

You don't need to edit your message five times. I'm starting a full-time job on Monday so I've been preparing for that, and don't have much extra time. I'm not the only one who can help you, maybe you should find one of the regular editors of that wiki who knows something about the type of coding you need. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 01:25, April 5, 2015 (UTC)
I know, sorry for that, just thought is saw some bad spelling and wording i my message, so i only tried to fix that.
And for your question, well i acually have tried to do so, but none of the other user`s there appears to know about coding like you do and i have asked around on other sites for help, but to no use. :(
So thats why I and the other Admins hope that you will try to help us with all this once you have time and feel for it, so we can finally furter update that wikia and learn a bit from you as well, which is why we also made you the "Template Repairman" on Bronies Wikia, the fandom counterpart of this wiki.
Bleck11 (talk) 01:49, April 5, 2015 (UTC)
Well for maps there's no need to duplicate them. You can link to any map using its number as a local link, and it will redirect there. For example, here is a local link to the one you have on that wiki: Special:Maps/1729. I'll go look at the gallery template now. As for the image popup script, it's still in development. Maybe once it's fully completed, I'll make it so it can easily be imported on other wikis. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 03:47, April 5, 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the info, I have fixed the map on that wikia now. :)
And thats nice, it would be great and very helpful if you could do so and add the codes for that feature, along with maybe the codes of some other new features that you has given this wikia that could be suitable for Bronies wikia too, on the "code page" of Bronies wikia once you have completed it. XD
As for the "Gallery infobox", well we would like to just have the "gallery picture" moved a little tiny bit more to the left, like you see on this one, not really the text located below it (the text can stay placed as it was before and did not need to be moved to the left).
Bleck11 (talk) 08:55, April 5, 2015 (UTC)
How is it now? ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 16:20, April 5, 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, now the gallery template is perfect, thanks. :)

Template:Emote Coding and Steps

May I please ask the JS and codings regarding the Emote template and the steps on how to make it work? Cuz I tried once.....and I sucked up. (facebook)

Thanks for reading this.

From MediaWiki:Common.js, copy everything from before the starting "//" on the line where it says "Support for Template:Emote" until the closing } that is not indented. Copy it to your wiki's Common.js. Then go to your MediaWiki:Emoticons page, open your browser's dev tools (usually F12 will do it), go to Console, type in wgArticleId and press Enter. Copy the number that shows up, and where it says 28113 in the JS you copied, replace that with the new number (make sure it's still surrounded by apostrophes within the brackets). Assuming you have also copied over the template, you should clear your browser's cache (Ctrl+Shift+R on a page on that wiki will do it, at least in Firefox) and then it should work. If not, the easiest thing to do is for me to just take a look at it and see what's going wrong. Also make sure you have your emoticons on MediaWiki:Emoticons and they're set up properly. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 01:14, June 3, 2015 (UTC)

Codings For Fixed Images

Are there any JS or CSS codings to make the fixed images template work? If so, what are the codings?

kBh6dCt.gifPinkgirl234 Sweet Treat 5DbANvV.png 01:33, June 12, 2015 (UTC)

Nope, it should work with just the template code. It also makes use of R for external images. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 01:58, June 12, 2015 (UTC)

Infobox overview link / EG chronology

Hey, Bobo. Could you add a new page link in Infobox character under "Other links" that links to "PAGENAME/Gallery/Overview"? Taking into account your images placeholder page and how we're having some template categories pop up here, would you agree to making a page such as at Project:Placeholder and having it on the project namespace instead, for images, categories and the like? How does the lyrics-toggle script work? I tried pasting code from Common.js into my browser console while viewing your sandbox as you suggested, but on first glance, it doesn't appear to do anything. File permission categories

Is there any reason to keep Category:Copyrighted Media, Category:Fair use images, and Category:Free images around? The only member of any of these categories is Project:Placeholders, after you disabled them from being added by any file permission templates a while back. If they are kept and put back into service, while they're still empty would be a great time to rename them if so desired. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:21, July 29, 2015 (UTC)

Oh yeah, forgot I did that. Personally I think it would be good to keep track of the licensing on non-show images, but it's not something that really anyone would spend the time looking up and making sure it's correct. Maybe a forum discussion on how to handle licensing on the wiki would be appropriate, hopefully with a good amount of discussion. There have been a couple discussions before, which have basically said that until we get asked to take something down, we won't bother with any licensing (one, two). Or I could just re-enable the categories. Don't actually remember why I disabled them. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 20:33, July 29, 2015 (UTC)
Another point would be that just because the categories are in use doesn't mean their use would actually have to be enforced. WMF wikis are super-anal about keeping files properly tagged because of the visibility and stated goals of the project(s), but on Wikia and elsewhere that I've had experience, proper file tagging is a much lower priority (with the exception of the Templates wiki, since files uploaded there are supposed to be used in templates, and thus are meant to be uploaded to other wikis that reuse those templates, but even then, it's mostly just me enforcing anything). Generally, the attitude is usually "we probably won't be proactive, but if you want to tag files, have at it as long as it's all correct". ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 20:39, July 29, 2015 (UTC)

About "pony list table"?

Hey Bobogoobo, sorry for bothering you with this, but I have been asking a lot of people for a while now if any of them could show/tell me how to use and create the exact same "pony list table", like the one seen here, on the pages of the Bronies wikia. However, no one knows how to do so as far as I have heard. :l

I understand that you are already busy enough as you have told me before, but I and the other Admins on that other wikia would be really grateful if you could just explain how to create a "pony list table" like you have on this wikia, you are kinda the only one left that may help us with this now, as far as I know?

Bleck11 (talk) 16:14, August 3, 2015 (UTC)

It's really just a table, not much special about it. You can see how it works in the code on the page you linked. It has an anchor for the character's name, then just cells with information and then a picture. The vertical text are images as well, and the colored cells use a template you can copy. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 19:51, August 3, 2015 (UTC)
Ok, I try to do that then, thank you so much for answering this. :)

Infobox crew

I'm starting to get into the habit of making fully fleshed-out pages for MLP cast and crew members. Examples:

With that in mind, might I propose a new infobox for "crew" or "crew member" with the following parameters?

{{Infobox crew
|image =
|caption =
|full name =
|nickname =
|sex =
|birthdate =
|occupation =
|role = (for voice roles, if any)
|website =

furdklZ.png 2xoHxMt.gif 20:49, August 6, 2015 (UTC)

Don't know if that will help, but the Portuguese MLP Wiki already use a template for crew pages like this one, if you want you guys can use this one to inspire yours.Matheus Leonardo VSTF 21:05, August 6, 2015 (UTC)
Looks great. Template done at Infobox crew. Let me know if you want anything changed or added. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 21:59, August 6, 2015 (UTC)
Looks pretty good. Can you make it allow for blank fields (to display filled fields even if preceding fields are empty)? furdklZ.png 2xoHxMt.gif 22:26, August 6, 2015 (UTC)
Done - made it so voice roles is the last row and only shows when filled in, the rest will always show. The behavior you didn't want is built into the Infobox template and I'd rather keep using it for consistency, so I just made the easy change. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 23:44, August 6, 2015 (UTC)

Music Player

Hey there Bobo, I was wondering if you know anything about the YouTube Player template, it's that everytime I copy and paste a song to my page, it would always show "embed/AAAAaaAaAa1" rather than the template itself. Those A's and 1 was just an example. If you know much about it, then it's okay. PonyMaker_Dolphins.png Seaswirl10 TalkMDrQPxP.gif 10:06, August 29, 2015 (UTC)

It looks to me like, due to recent-ish security issues, Wikia has disabled verbatim tags completely which are required for it to work. Take a tour around some other profiles and you would probably notice that it works for nobody. Even wiki's javascript is locked from editing. They should unlock javascript sooner or later, but verbatims are probably gone forever, which means that the template will probably have to be rewritten to javascript. Vengir (talk) 10:29, August 29, 2015 (UTC)
The above is mostly accurate. There are some recent posts on Community Central about the security issues and what they are doing to resolve them. There was a popup saying that the template that people used for that YouTube player was disabled. I don't plan on helping replace it because I always found it annoying and wrote my own script to disable it. I recommend just embedding a video using the <youtube> tag (assuming that still works). ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 04:19, August 30, 2015 (UTC)
<youtube> still works, but only if used inside {{#tag: function. This is what song infoboxes are doing at the moment. Of course it's unable to embed it on autoplay, but honestly, I too hate autoplaying music. Vengir (talk) 09:20, August 30, 2015 (UTC)

Infobox character - a question

About the "kind" parameter in Infobox character - I know it automatically adds pages to Category:Equestria Girls characters if "& Human" is inputted. Can it be tweaked to add pages to Category:Humans if simply "Human" were inputted? furdklZ.png 2xoHxMt.gif 20:22, October 2, 2015 (UTC)

Done - if the parameter is "Human" or "Human & X" it will be added to the category. I have a question about the category description - would saying "Characters who were first introduced in the human world" be more accurate? ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 20:42, October 2, 2015 (UTC)

Matheus Leonardo VSTF 22:22, October 8, 2015 (UTC)

No worries, I'm here to help. Emote is supported by a JavaScript function, which you can find at MediaWiki:Common.js (search for "Template:Emote"). You can copy that script to Common.js on your wiki, and change the number 28113 to 1467. If you can't get it to work, let me know and I'll take a look. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 22:58, October 8, 2015 (UTC)

Help with citation for DVD audio Commentary

On the Sour Sweet page, I made an edit that was probably irrelevant to the material it was next to. It would be better suited in a triva section. Since it seems speculative without a source, how do I reference that my source is the DVD audio commentary? It seemed important to the art director that her hair beret was "specifically cranberries because they're sour and sweet." I knoww the audio commentary is offical material, but I'm not quite sure if I should quote it because it seems speculative without a source.

Any help would be apreciated!

Flames5123 (talk) 00:12, October 15, 2015 (UTC)

This wiki doesn't use trivia sections (see Help:Trivia), and since the audio commentary is official material, I would recommend specifying which of the crew members said that, and just putting it in the sentence, perhaps at either the bottom of the "Depiction in Friendship Games" section or making a new section above that titled "Production and development", something along those lines. I would word it like this: "On the DVD audio commentary for Friendship Games *insert crew member name her* says that Sour Sweet's hair beret is designed to look like cranberries, reflecting her personality of sour and sweet." Or something along those lines. Hope this helped!-- Undisguised_Nyx_by_AibotNya.pngJonny Manztalkcontribse-mailedit count 00:47, October 15, 2015 (UTC)Disguised_Nyx_by_AibotNya.png

Infobox character: Costumes and Alts

I've noticed that the "costume" parameter is re-purposed for "alternate" or "alternate universe" (non-EG) counterparts for characters. While for some characters that don't wear costumes anyway in the show, they probably don't need the extra tab, but this is because lately I've been adding costume images for some characters (like so), but then I got to Shining Armor and Dr. Hooves, who already have their respective costume tab sections used for their AU counterparts from the Reflections IDW arc (and probably other characters too).

Since it seemed kinda odd to bunch their costumed appearances (mostly because SA's old ID had him in his armor) with their AU counterparts or temporary forms/race swaps; maybe there could be another tab parameter for "alternates" separate from costumes? Or would this add unnecessary clutter to the infoboxes? Usually, I'd probably try adding the extra category/tab myself and implementing it, but the documentation does say something about contacting you first about...modifications. That and I'm not sure how to do that exactly. — ChainChomp2 (talk) 09:44, October 29, 2015 (UTC)

Another main tab would be pretty cluttered yeah, and it might not fit on some pages. I'd recommend following the forum that decided to de-clutter the tabs. I'm pretty sure it decided that for characters with already cluttered inboxes, costumes should only go in the gallery overview. When there are so many images, a bunch of costumes don't really add anything and make the infobox less usable. Also, feel free to edit templates if you feel they can be improved; you don't need permission to do so (I edited the documentation to make that clear). ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 17:20, October 29, 2015 (UTC)

It uses some relatively complex JavaScript (here) that may not work too well on other wikis without several changes. Honestly you'd be better off using the LST extension (which you can also see examples of on this wiki) instead. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 22:34, November 11, 2015 (UTC)
Would there not be a risk of hitting the transclusion limits without javascript? Besides, for simple transcripts, standard <onlyinclude></onlyinclude> tags with transclusions like should work just as fine. Vengir (talk) 22:46, November 11, 2015 (UTC)
Thank both of you for the advice, I'm very grateful for it! <3 Ha³ (talk) 22:51, November 11, 2015 (UTC)
Ah yeah, that's true. Let me know if you hit the limit and I can work something out. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 00:58, November 12, 2015 (UTC)
For whatever reason, the LST extension is not working on my wikia, go figure. Ha³ (talk) 18:00, November 15, 2015 (UTC)
Did you write to Wikia staff? This is not an extention that is enabled by users. Vengir (talk) 18:15, November 15, 2015 (UTC)

LST extension limit

Hello again, Bobogoobo! So, I've been using the extension to transclude the transcripts from their pages. However, I believe I must have reached a limit, seeing as how the transcripts are starting to glitch when I add new ones. How can I work around this? Ha³ (talk) 20:31, November 22, 2015 (UTC)

Can you link to the page where you're using it? ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 01:58, November 23, 2015 (UTC)
Hither. Ha³ (talk) 16:58, November 23, 2015 (UTC)
Well, it is indeed the post-expand include size. Unfortunately #lst counts the entire size of the transcluded page, rather than just what is taken from it. Would it defeat the intended purpose of the page to put EG-related transcripts on a separate subpage? If you want to keep them all together, I guess the easiest way around it would be commenting out the transclusions, and me writing a script that puts them back in. Saves the trouble of rewriting the complex version of the script and making you redo your work. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 01:29, November 24, 2015 (UTC)
I'd rather go with the latter. After everything is done, could you help me with importing the transcripts (right now in a Templates page) to a Special:Blank Page? Ha³ (talk) 17:45, November 24, 2015 (UTC)
The wikicode for it would still have to be stored somewhere. And since that is the case, it would be easier to display it on that page (for example, the project namespace). Generally that makes more sense to people than using a blank page (it's easier to link to), even though the content will be displayed dynamically. I can do whatever you prefer though. (Potentially keep the template, and just transclude it via script onto BlankPage.) Just trying to make it easier to maintain in case something breaks and I'm not around to fix it. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 06:15, November 25, 2015 (UTC)
I guess transcluding it from the Blank Page should work. I tried it myself, but it didn't work. Ha³ (talk) 18:36, November 25, 2015 (UTC)

We have a problem

These two pages (and possibly others besides) have respective appearances galleries. However, the links to these galleries do not appear in the infoboxes of the main articles. Since the other links header does not appear in the infobox template, no one thus far has been able to fix this issue.

I am told that you might know something about this, so please investigate the matter at your earliest convenience. These galleries were supposed to resolve the issue of infobox crowding, but it is only a suitable solution so long as the content removed from the infobox remains accessible. Without the appearances gallery links, these important articles are missing vital images.

Thank you.

Guildmaster Grovyle (talk) 00:08, November 27, 2015 (UTC)

Fixed. Every character with an overview gallery must be included on Has overview. Vengir (talkcontributions) 01:16, November 27, 2015 (UTC)

Portable Infoboxes

Hey Bobogoobo, I just want to let you know that I've been working since this discussion in the Portable infobox for episodes at pt.mlp.wikia (which is very similar to the one used here), and thanks to Rappy 4187‎ this Info is now fully operational. If this wikia's still intrested in this kind of Infobox, I'm up to help, just let me know. Matheus Leonardo VSTF 16:43, December 7, 2015 (UTC)

Possible Bug with DeadVideos Script

I import this script onto another wiki. About a week ago a large YouTube account used by the wiki was deleted due to copyright claims (just old songs) and these videos are still not being reported by the script (there are, if I recall correctly, at least 100, likely more, videos that should be listed). Is this a bug/caching/other problem? The script still lists deleted videos (there are two at the moment). DEmersonJMFM 13:49, December 25, 2015 (UTC)

Hey, sorry I never replied to you. Is this still occurring? I only see a few videos listed, so if you didn't already take care of the dead ones you mentioned I'll take a look. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 03:59, February 17, 2016 (UTC)
Yes, though I did fix a large number of the deleted videos there are still many deleted videos not being displayed (for example, most in this category - the top eight have working videos so you'll have to go through some of the other articles). Edit: And there were well over 100 deleted videos before I started replacing them, many more than the few displayed should be listed. DEmersonJMFM 02:47, February 18, 2016 (UTC)
Fixed and submitted to code review (you can use Test Mode to see the fixes in action immediately). The issue was that the videos on that account weren't being treated as being unavailable, so I needed to get more information from the API and check the video's "status". Let me know if you find any more videos that should be listed and aren't, because there may be more statuses that I need to check for. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 03:45, February 18, 2016 (UTC)
Will most certainty let you know of additional issues, and thanks for the update. The script is very useful so I'm glad you still update it. DEmersonJMFM 14:14, February 21, 2016 (UTC)

I have noticed when you use pagination function, the full edit link from MediaWiki:Gadget-FullCommentEdit.js just disappear. Can you fix it? Thank you :) Chiến Thần Vương (talk) 12:14, February 16, 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for reporting the issue! I've fixed the code so it works properly, just need to wait for Wikia to review it. If you copied it elsewhere, you can just copy the new code. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 03:59, February 17, 2016 (UTC)

The gadget I almost forgot about

Hey, Bobo. A while ago I wrote to Callofduty about the fix to a particular gadget. He forgot to apply one more correction to the CSS (missing span selector in the last line I provided) and then I forgot about the matter too. Would you mind taking care of it? Vengir (talkcontributions) 09:12, February 17, 2016 (UTC)

Done. Thanks for figuring out these fixes! I don't use the gadget myself so I wasn't sure if it was still usable. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 17:02, February 17, 2016 (UTC)

"All transcripts on a single page" bug

The transcript for "Maud Pie" is blank. If I had to guess, I assume that's because the transcript it's trying to look up is a transcript for "Maud Pie" and not "Maud Pie (episode)" which is where the transcript actually is. ThecnoNSMB (talk) 20:49, February 21, 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the report! This was a simple problem, Template:Transcripts was linking to a redirect and the script didn't know to follow it. Fixed now. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 00:52, February 22, 2016 (UTC)

RE: talk page removal

I think most admins don't mind if users remove the welcome message off their talk, as it's automated and not really discussion. B0lGGoQ.gifOz 21:25, February 28, 2016 (UTC)

It wasn't their talk page, it was someone else's (who has been globally blocked for five years apparently). That's why I reverted it. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 21:28, February 28, 2016 (UTC)
Oh fair point, I thought it was theirs and only just noticed it wasn't until you said so... my bad. B0lGGoQ.gifOz 21:30, February 28, 2016 (UTC)

Episodes page problem

Hello Bobo,

Recently several users found that the episodes page is loading for them slowly or even not loading at all. Thanks to Jonny I'm not certain that the script that is causing the problem is the one that is supposed to combine all the tables into one for sorting purposes. Could you rewrite it to be less resource-heavy and disable it until you do so, or just remove it altogether? Thanks in advance. Vengir (talkcontributions) 09:10, March 9, 2016 (UTC)

Upon further investigation I've discovered that the cause of sudden crashes is the recent Throwy's edit of the table structure. I suppose you didn't predict in your script that somebody would just remove a column. Vengir (talkcontributions) 09:21, March 9, 2016 (UTC)

I'm working on it now. And surprisingly, that wasn't the cause. There was no production order column when I wrote the script. Gameleon added it on 1 November, literally the day after I wrote the script, and I guess I didn't notice and nobody challenged it at the time. I agree with Throwy, it's unnecessary and I'm surprised it lasted so long. There must have been some other shifts or changes that broke it. I'll go work my magic :P Thanks for the notification. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 21:29, March 9, 2016 (UTC)
I arrived at my second conclusion after viewing the old revision. When I viewed the revision from before Throwy's edit, it seemed to work fine, but now it's broken. Perhaps my assumption was false, but I thought there might be something to it. Vengir (talkcontributions) 21:34, March 9, 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, it seems that me seeing the script loaded in that particular case was mostly luck. Comparing two diffs with both of them having that extra column crashed my browser again. Vengir (talkcontributions) 21:48, March 9, 2016 (UTC)

I think there might be something still not quite right with the script when viewing the page diffs. This might have something to do with the fact that diffs are also tables. Vengir (talkcontributions) 14:21, March 10, 2016 (UTC)

Good point. It should now only run when viewing the page normally. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 19:46, March 10, 2016 (UTC)
How does that little bit of code you added work actually? I don't suppose any non-empty string will evaluate as boolean true, will it? Vengir (talkcontributions) 20:03, March 10, 2016 (UTC)
Non-empty strings are truthy and empty strings are falsy. getParamValue returns null if the parameter isn't present, which is also falsy. See here for a little more detailed explanation. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 20:08, March 10, 2016 (UTC)
Hah, interesting. That would explain why my tests with == true returned it as false. Vengir (talkcontributions) 20:25, March 10, 2016 (UTC)

Help with template code?

Is it possible to edit these two templates to automatically generate a person's age based on the "birth date" parameter (like the "Crew" infobox does on this Wiki)? Or would I need to create another template to work in tandem with them?

furdklZ.png 2xoHxMt.gif 02:16, April 3, 2016 (UTC)

It would be easier to use a separate template and just call it like the crew infobox does. It uses Template:Age which is a very simple version I wrote, but you may also be interested in something like Wikipedia's Template:Birth date and age family. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 02:24, April 3, 2016 (UTC)

Solution to Youtube hosted songs from MLP:FiM being blocked by SME

It's a serious matter about the "Songs" section of mlp.wikia.

Recently I found out that SME (Sony Music Entertainment) began to gradually block songs from the show, in 244 countries (basically everywhere), just like it was with one song in Equestria Girls 3 (the rest there were blocked in Germany).

After some testing on my spare channels I figured out that it happens as an automatic matching. So, sooner or later, all the songs linked from youtube on mlp.wikia won't be playable. And it won't be possible to re-upload them since they'd be instantly blocked by youtube's automatic system.

Now, about the solution to this upcoming problem.

As you can see from the "Songs" section pages, I've been hosting great quality songs on my youtube channel (with no TV channel logos and with fixing possible iTunes slipups), and most of them are featured on mlp.wikia pages of those songs.

But, I can also upload them in a standard mp4 format and the same quality on such sources like Google Drive and Dailymotion. Google Drive, by the way, has a player similar to youtube, so it would play with options of different resolution in a similar way for people. And, Dailymotion is more reliable for copyright, even if some times working slow for some people.

I suggest that, before all the songs clip videos, used on all the songs pages, get blocked by SME with no possibility of reupload on youtube, there will be some changes done to embedding videos here.

So that you could embed both Google Drive and Dailymotion versions of videos without any trouble. I'm still not sure that Google Drive won't be affected by SME copyright some time later (or that it would withstand the load of connections from mlp.wikia), but I'm 100% sure about Dailymotion. And I'm going to try to keep both variants for every song: on Google Drive and on Dailymotion, in the same quality, when this mass blocking will occur on my youtube channel.

Here are the examples of what you'd need to work with to embed the newly hosted videos:

Google Drive:

Dailymotion (long link):

It's all about that first sequence for long links, btw:

And the rest of the text in them is irrelevant.

Dailymotion (short link, used for sharing):

So, what do you think about this matter? :)

In case you'll be interested in this cooparation and standardization of all the sonsg linked and unaffected by SME copright, we could also talk about it on my Skype, too. It's the same as my current nickname: AstrumSpark

Dailymotion is supported by Wikia's video uploader. If you reupload the existing videos using the Dailymotion link instead, it will behave the same, and nothing will need to be changed on the wiki, but it will now be safe from the youtube takedowns. This would be the best way to do it as it avoids requiring any cleanup work. You can reupload a video by going to its File page (linked if you click the "i" in the bottom right of a video player), clicking the dropdown next to Edit, and choosing Replace or Reupload. Hope that makes sense. Thanks, ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 01:18, April 16, 2016 (UTC)
I can't find any file page and any "i" button or link around a wikia video player for youtube hosted songs... or any other link or button to get there from the songs pages :(
I'm using Firefox, if it changes anything. Could you explain more specifically how to do it?
Also, tomorrow I was going to start reuploading all the songs on a separate channel on dailymotion. Hopefully I'd finish it soon enough.
Should I replace the current versions of youtube songs for MLP:FiM and Equestria Girls movies right away after I get them up on dailymotion, or should I wait till those that aren't blocked on youtube yet would be blocked, before trying to replace the links on their pages?
MysteriousBrony FANMADE Twilight's Cutie Mark (talk) 01:38, April 16, 2016 (UTC)
Sorry about that, I just remembered that most of the English videos are embedded, not uploaded to the wiki like the international videos. In that case, it's up to you when to switch to them on the wiki. They don't really need to be replaced until they're taken down, but future-proofing is good and makes sure they aren't broken for a while without being noticed. Also, when uploading videos to the wiki, it's helpful to put them in the proper subcategory of Category:Videos. Thanks again. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 06:54, April 16, 2016 (UTC)
Okay, thank you. :)
As I got it, when something is "uploaded" from dailymotion on mlp.wikia in the Infobox on a song page I need to chage this part "youtubeid =" into something like this "video = ".
Also I found these two cantegories: |
There are a few videos already, but they are mostly with TV channel watermarks and used on some people's blogs other posts, so I dont' really want to touch those. I'm going to upload every single song in an organized fashion on dailymotion and then "upload" them on mlp.wikia
To add videos to their categories, I just have to use that button "Add category" and a song video will appear automatically on those category pages?
Should I make some specific naming pattern for those videos names, or I can use the same naming pattern I always did on youtube (example: )?
MysteriousBrony FANMADE Twilight's Cutie Mark (talk) 13:20, April 16, 2016 (UTC)
Just name them after the song titles, without any additional tags such as FiM or HD. You can include as much info in the title as it is required to differentiate it from another file of that song (usually that would consist of "reprise", but it can be different depending on the case). Of course you can name the files on DM however you want, as long as you change it on wiki. The category is added pretty much in the same way as for the files, however they will also be automatically added to category:videos – you should remove it while you add the proper category. Vengir (talkcontributions) 13:32, April 16, 2016 (UTC)
Got it. Thank you!
After I upload all of them on my dailymotion channel, I think I should just replace my youtube vids with those dailymotion links on songs pages to make them, as Bobogoobo said, future-proof, in the light of growing copyright problems on youtube. It will also allow to properly embed Equestria Girls 1/2/3 songs which I'll do after the show ones.
Questions: Should I mark such replacements as Minor edits or not? And, what kind of summary is best to use in such case? Something like "replacing with a better quality video on Dailymotion which will also prevent possible copyright problems which happen on youtube"? (Yes, they will be indeed better quality, since video codec on youtube ruins the picture a lot in comparison to dailymotion, even with good quality sources I still have on my computer). MysteriousBrony FANMADE Twilight's Cutie Mark (talk) 14:17, April 16, 2016 (UTC)
Why don't we use something that doesn't use Flash anyway? Maybe vimeo? My regular browser in particular has troubles playing Flash-based videos smoothly. Vengir (talkcontributions) 14:26, April 16, 2016 (UTC)
I for one had problems with Vimeo. Not to mention that it has copyright problems just like youtube. "Friendship is Witchcraft"'s creator was trying to use Vimeo for that parody series, but it got removed from there, too. The most safe from copyright place is Dailymotion, in addition to almost unlimited video uploads. The whole point of switching from youtube is to keep videos in the safest place possible from being taken down, with someone (me in this case) willing to maintain that place and upload new videos in consistent quality.
As for Flash, it depends on both computer and browser. I have the opposite experience. When youtube used Flash for videos everything played fine on my computer. Now, with this new non-flash way, I have difficulties and it freezes while loading my computer CPU. But in any case, Dailymotion have been getting ready to switch to the same way as youtube works now. And as I said, we need a safe place from copyright. Google Drive or Dailymotion are the best options I could find. And Bobogoobo said that Dailymotion is already supported by wiki, so that's the logical way to go about it. MysteriousBrony FANMADE Twilight's Cutie Mark (talk) 14:46, April 16, 2016 (UTC)
Actually I decided to do it a bit differently. I'll upload all the songs on Dailymotion and Wikia to have everything ready at hand (I'll make a playlist of them on my blog on wikia for convenience), but I won't be changing them here right away on Songs pages. :) So far the videos on my youtube channel are fine (detection system can work right away for new video to block them, but already uploaded ones will be slowing catching up, so it won't happen right away with all the videos I have there).
And only when I will be seeing some videos on my youtube channel getting blocked, I'll automatically know that it's time to replace those videos on their respective Songs pages with safe ones on Dailymotion. I think it will be the best approach. MysteriousBrony FANMADE Twilight's Cutie Mark (talk) 15:06, April 16, 2016 (UTC)
Vengir, by the way, I checked how Dailymotion works, and it turns out they don't use Flash anymore just like Youtube. Videos play there without Flash on my Firefox. So it's all good :) MysteriousBrony FANMADE Twilight's Cutie Mark (talk) 13:57, April 19, 2016 (UTC)
Well, not exactly. It's supposed to automatically pick either Flash or HTML5. The problem is that picks Flash for me. And I'm on Firefox too. I've written to their support team about that. I'm curious what they will reply with. Vengir (talkcontributions) 15:12, April 19, 2016 (UTC)
Sounds good! Vimeo is also supported by Wikia, in case you need to use that sometime. And yes, you're correct about how to switch the video. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 20:51, April 16, 2016 (UTC)
Update on the situation! Probably songs on youtube will fine for now. :) SME changed blocking in 244 countries to just Germany everywhere (although it's still happening in waves, so some vids might be not released yet)! :) Maybe Hasbro noticed the drop of money income they were having from monetizing all those songs uploads on youtube and had a talk with Sony. Either way, looks like the final policy would just blocked in Germany. But Germany was always strict on copyright and their sound recording industry is even currently sueing Google (again), I'm not surprised that they stayed blocked in Germany. A lot of things get blocked in Germany on youtube, so they are used to it by now and know workarounds. MysteriousBrony FANMADE Twilight's Cutie Mark (talk) 19:54, April 22, 2016 (UTC)
Bobogoobo, I have a question about correct files naming. I was still going to put all songs on Dailymotion to have them as files on mlp.wikia for the future so they'd be at hand. I was going to link them on my blog post on my userpage. The question is, how do I name songs files in the cases like this one? It's hosted on youtube there, but its name is already correct, so I can't just use the same name Welcome Song, replacing it wold be bad since it's two different host sites for songs. What do I do for my dailymotion uploads in such cases? What do I add in their title name so they won't require a renaming by administrators later? Should I got with, for example, "Welcome Song (Dailymotion)" for such rare cases, and name all other songs files normally if they don't have an already uploaded youtube alternative here on mlp.wikia? MysteriousBrony FANMADE Twilight's Cutie Mark (talk) 17:55, April 25, 2016 (UTC)
I'm not sure what exactly you are trying to achieve, but I would suggest… not uploading them to wiki as files just yet. Just put regular links in your blog if you need them at hand. We can just upload them when and if they are actually needed – it only takes a moment. No need to overprepare. Vengir (talkcontributions) 21:31, April 25, 2016 (UTC)

I'm trying to achieve more organizing, in case something suddenly happens to youtube apploads causing different people to be trying to add different videos with varying quality (creating a bit of a mess from the organizing standpoint) to quickly fix all of that and make videos on songs pages available again. If everything is uploaded in one place in one perfect quality, it's the way to go (sorry, I guess I have a bit of Twilight personality in me there... but still).
I could do what you said, but still I'd rather wait for an opinion from the administrator of this site, though. If the administrator thnks the same way as you do, then sure, I do it that way.
MysteriousBrony FANMADE Twilight's Cutie Mark (talk) 21:43, April 25, 2016 (UTC)

Yeah, it's probably better to just wait and see what happens - it doesn't take that long to upload a video (it wouldn't be a bad thing at all if the video was broken for a few seconds, or even a few minutes), and saves work on the part of administrators such as myself (such as not needing to rename the file).-- Undisguised_Nyx_by_AibotNya.pngJonny Manztalkcontribse-mailedit count 21:56, April 25, 2016 (UTC)Disguised_Nyx_by_AibotNya.png

I still think it's better idea to just wait, but here's one of the possible alternative solutions. We would name all of the files to include the word "backup", and then add all of the songs under a separate template argument. The template itself might incorporate a switch that would let you choose either a YT video or a DM backup, either globally from the template itself, or locally per article. But let's just wait what Bobo says. Vengir (talkcontributions) 21:57, April 25, 2016 (UTC)

I'll keep my eye on this. But either way, even if it's early to take precautions, around 80 songs videos would be new to mlp.wikia, only those 10 or so videos would require a different naming pattern, so I don't see a huge problem. I could temporarily name them with addition of (DM) or (Dailymotion) or (Backup) or whatever is best. So I will upload all of them here, so they will be here. It won't affect anything badly, but will provide the file pages already established to use in the future. As for those 10 or less videos, probably whatever I add to distinguish them from the current youtube uploads here won't ruin anything much. But yeah, it's important what Bobogoobo would say about the matter. I'm willing to to all this job. But if Bobogoobo says I shoudn't, I won't. MysteriousBrony FANMADE Twilight's Cutie Mark (talk) 23:42, April 25, 2016 (UTC)
I don't think a template switch is necessary. As for the already taken names, are your uploads better quality or the same? In either case, as long as it's the same portion of the song, it should be fine just to replace them (go to the file page, click the dropdown next to Edit, and choose Replace). If the existing video is only part of the song, we can rename it first to say which part it is, and then you can upload at that name. For now, I'd say make the blog with the dailymotion links as suggested and they can be uploaded when needed. Uploading ahead of time would make them susceptible to being deleted as unused files. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 00:22, April 26, 2016 (UTC)
Okay, got it. :) "are your uploads better quality or the same?" They are bette quality of course, since Youtube has a worse quality of video encoding than Dailymotion. Example: | You can see the blur and graphics artifacts on the Youtube version of the same file uploaded. Zoom in into original size of the picture to see the difference better. Episodes "sortable" table

Hey, Bobo. I've just discovered another bug with a sortable list of episodes script:… it can't be sorted, because there are no headers with sorting buttons included. Vengir (talkcontributions) 20:49, May 7, 2016 (UTC)

It works for me. Perhaps the wait time before it tries to make the table sortable is not sufficient for you for some reason. I've increased the delay; once the revision is approved, hard refresh and try again. ~Bobogoobo (talk) Lyra_speaks_S2E25.png 22:07, May 7, 2016 (UTC)
