What Goes Updo
The Mane Six are excited for the opening of Princess Cadance's traveling Crystal Empire Carnival, but Rarity is running late. After opening the carnival to the public, Cadance meets with Twilight Sparkle and her friends, who become enamored with her sparkly hairstyle. She invites them to try out the carnival's mane-styling booth, and after the ponies spend some time getting mane makeovers, Cadance takes a selfie with them and posts it on social media.
When Rarity finally arrives to the carnival and sees her friends' new hairstyles, she wants a mane makeover herself, but the mane-styling booth is closed. She gets even more envious when she sees her friends' selfie on Cadance's social media account. To help Rarity feel included, Applejack comes up with the idea of her and her friends styling her mane themselves, but the end result is terrible, lowering her spirits even further.
Applejack comes up another idea for the rest of the Mane Six to ruin their own hairstyles. Afterward, Rarity tells them they did not need to do that, accepting that it was her own fault for being late to the carnival in the first place. Cadance reappears and says she took the selfie off her social media account after seeing Rarity being left out of her friends' fun. She messes up her own mane and takes another selfie with all of the Mane Six together.
At the Crystal Empire Carnival, each of the Mane Six wants to do a different activity: Applejack wants to bob for apples, Rarity wants to get her face painted, Rainbow Dash wants to play the high striker, and Fluttershy wants to ride the teacups. Pinkie Pie suggests they split up to do separate things and synchronize later via text message.
Some time later, Pinkie texts her friends asking where they are. The rest of the Mane Six take her message the wrong way in various ways, resulting in a string of misinterpreted messages that causes each of the ponies to believe the others are upset with them for some reason. With their spirits low, the Mane Six inadvertently come together at the Ferris wheel and try to explain their collective misunderstanding. The ponies make amends over their breakdown in communication and resolve to communicate better.
